Excuse my ignorance on drug law in the US... but could this mean jail time for TP?

Ever since my brother called to tell me I have been trying to find the charge and cannot. Without the charge I cannot answer that. You should look at the link I attached. It is a quick and easy read that really explains a lot.

Hopefully he had a prescription for the alleged possession.

The only thing that worries me is the extradition warrant. I mean they knew he was gonna be in Texas during the season, yet they went through the trouble and expense to file an extradition warrant. I hope it is minor or at least a misdemeanor version instead of a felony (likely a fine, and no suspension,) but if it is a felony, he will likely be suspended. Does anyone know the league rules on that?

Knowing the wolves' luck this is going to be a Britney Griner situation all over again. Governor Greg Abbott is going to hold him hostage and try to rake us over the coals to get him back. Maybe Isaiah Rider will step up to try and bring him home.

Finally got some new details on this. Gonna quote the new information and cite the source below.

“ The warrant was reportedly out of his home state of Texas and stemmed from traces of drugs found during a traffic stop, according to the Miami Herald.”

My analysis: if true this is probably great news for Prince and for the Wolves. Traces of drugs likely means low quantity and there is the issue of establishing they belong to him or were put there with his knowledge (what if he lent the car to someone else, or he was riding in the back and a designated driver had the pills, ect…) I still don’t know what the drug is (could make a difference in theory,) or whether they are charging at the felony level (unlikely if only traces,) but this sounds a lot better now than before.

WHAT IS A “DANGEROUS DRUG” UNDER TEXAS LAW?

According to Texas Health and Safety Code § 483.0001, a dangerous drug is a device or a drug that is unsafe for self-medication and that is not included in Schedules I through V or Penalty Groups 1 through 4 of the Texas Controlled Substances Act. In other words, it is any substance that must be obtained through a doctor's prescription that does not fall within the drug schedules listed in the Texas Controlled Substances Act.

There is an important exception to keep in mind as well: marijuana. While marijuana is not on the schedule of controlled substances, it is also not considered a dangerous drug under the statute. Marijuana is a unique case that is treated differently from every other regulated substance.

While the name may be confusing, there are clear differences between dangerous drugs and scheduled controlled substances under Texas law. There are drugs in both categories that can only be legally possessed with a prescription. Dangerous drugs, however, only include drugs that are not as strictly regulated. According to Texas law, Xanax and Valium are examples of dangerous drugs that can lead to a possession of dangerous drugs charge.

On the other hand, controlled substances include the most addictive substances available. They include street drugs like heroin or methamphetamine as well as prescription drugs like morphine. The most addictive scheduled drugs, known as penalty group 1 drugs, carry the toughest sentences of any controlled substance. If you are arrested with any controlled substance listed on the drug schedule, you can be charged with possession of controlled substances in Texas.

I am a little concerned they could add weapon charges for being in possession of handguns while having THC oil and less than 2 ounces of Marijuana. But honestly I expect the whole thing to be settled with a fine and promise not to sue for the national media attention and designation of illegal drugs absent context.

It is more the legal definition in Texas is very poorly designed. The media had such limited information all they could say was “dangerous drugs.” Unfortunately they added a controlled substance charge for the THC and Marijuana. The Marijuana was around 2 ounces and the state doesn’t prosecute below 4 (according to what I read.) So for the MJ he just needs to attend a four hour class. Not sure what will happen with the THC. Ideally this is a fine and the whole thing goes away. I am not sure this is the best test case for THC prosecution.

Absolutely unhinged that they wasted resources to get him at a Florida airport. Fortunately, it seems like a nothing-burger.

I agree. But remember he was let out on bond the next morning. No extradition was paid for. The only reason the out of state warrant triggered was because the lab tests came back 3 months later confirming THC oil. The real issue is what they do next. They added a controlled substance charge to the weapons charge and are acting like they intended to throw the book at him. That said, this is an election year and this is going to be VERY VERY unpopular. It screams of racial bias and even in Texas there is little appetite to go after 2 ounces of pot and a vape pen with THC. Best guess fine, four hour class, and agreement not to sue. In exchange his record will be kept clean and the conviction expunged in a short period of time.

Hmm maybe sign markieff Morris as a precaution if we can.. Or make a small trade for Stanley Johnson who just got traded to Jazz from Lakers. He's a decent backup 3D guy.
