Josh Minott

So I’m local to Vegas and attended much of summer league. The player that surprised/impressed me the most overall was Josh Minott. I’m now sitting at the Ignite/Iowa Wolves game, he has 8 points in the first 6 minutes, and still looks pretty damned good. Small sample size and all, but… yeah
Any more context here? Specific reasons he isn’t getting more opportunity?

We’re excited about him too, and he has tremendous athleticism and drive, but he came in very raw. The front office plan has been to give him a year to acclimate with NBA-level coaching, and Connelly considers him to be our replacement this summer for the 2023 draft pick we are sending to Utah. Moreover, in a clever bit of GMing, Connelly got Kyle Anderson for just enough under the MLE to give Minott the full Hinkie Special, so he’ll be here for four years.

Are you sure? Are you sure you aren't tired of him and looking to move him on the cheap?

Yeah, he looked great again. If you have fans that aren't excited about him, they should really watch last night's game. Some quick amateur observations I'd make:
* He's very aggressive and effective at getting to the rim. Great length.
* He's a very willing passer. He only ended up with 1 assist last night, but I don't think that is a fair reflection.
* His shot looks a bit unorthodox, but gets the job done. It is a bit of a slow release, but I suspect he'll just need to shoot well enough to keep people honest while he does most of his damage inside.
* Aggressive on defense. There was a sequence where he bothered or stole two straight inbounds plays. He ended up with 3 steals, I think.
* At times he was a bit excitable and tried to do too much. That's what explains his 4 turnovers from last night. But that's really the only clear indication to me that he's "raw" and needs more time. A few times he took the ball into trouble in the paint and ended up coughing it up.
Congrats. He really looks like a keeper, which is always fun with a 2nd round pick.

What Context do you need? Do you really think a raw 20-year old should be getting meaningful minutes on a playoff team with aspirations of playing in May and June?
Who exactly minutes is he taking? The Frontcourt is loaded with Gobert/Reid/SlowMo/McDaniels and any remaining minutes go to Garza/sliding Prince to the 4.
I'm really high in Minott long-term as a rotation piece. His defensive ceiling is exceptionally high and he has enough tools offensively to not be Josh Okogie on that end of the court. But he needs time to saturate and marinate into being an NBA player. The hope is he gets run next year but I wouldn't be surprised if he isn't a consistent wolf until 2024-2025.

I think Minott should have at least one full off-season to work on his body and shot. With 10-15lbs of added core muscles and league average 3pt shot he can get minutes in rotation

Yup, but assuming he adds 10-15 lbs of muscle is a ton to add in one off-season [or even 1 calendar year] and him becoming a league average 3P shooter is going to take years.

agree that he still needs some work on his shot but I noticed that his shot looks much better now when compared to college...it was quite ugly in college

In the pre-season, introductory one-on-one interviews, he said ..
“Overall, I felt like I just got into the groove of things. It’s like a lawn mower, once I got goin, just kept goin.”

I'm so excited for Summer League, I'll tell you that!
Minott's G League time has been much more intermittent lately, for what it's worth. Yesterday was his first Iowa action since Jan. 29.

I would love for Finch to start giving Minott short stretches of playing time at the NBA level. At this point I think getting 5-6 minutes on a somewhat regular basis would do a lot for his development. One lineup I'd be really excited to see would be NAW, Ant, Jaden, Josh, and Naz. That group could be devastating in terms of athletic ability, defensive disruption, and pace (plus all are 24 or under).

If Josh Minott was drafted this season from the G-League like Scoot, would he be a lottery pick?

I think he doesn't look very raw, and you seem unexpectedly aggressive. There are a lot of guys getting regular run in the league that look more raw than he does. He makes some mistakes, because he's a kid, but looks ready to take the next step, and after a point you get better by playing with better players.
The context may be that your frontcourt is pretty deep at the moment. I don't spend a lot of time studying the Timberwolves rotations. I can tell you that I've seen Garza, and I'd play Minott over Garza, personally. I wouldn't expect him to be starting for you, but I am surprised they've only managed to get him 60-70 minutes on the year. Also possible you guys would have known some other reason they are slow rolling him, but it sounds like it is just giving him more time to grow into his body and play against (almost) NBA level competition while you're comfortable with your current frontcourt.

I took my best wild guess on this elsewhere. I don't think it is crazy to think he'd be a lottery pick, and maybe even a mid-lottery pick. His G League stats and what I've seen with my own eyes suggest he might very well be viewed in a similar vein to Kuminga, and that got Kuminga projected from 5-8 or so in his draft.
