POLL: Terrence Shannon Jr or the #17 Pick
Suppose there was a Durant deal where PHX demanded we include either Terrence Shannon Jr, or the #17 Draft Pick.
But we get to choose which one we’d want to keep!
Who would you choose?

Depends on who we draft at 17. If I knew it was a PG or C and I had reason to believe they would be rotation ready, then knowing I have Clark and DDV I trade TSJ. Then I feel really stupid and hire very good home security for trading for KD, killing my franchise, and getting the kind of death threats Nico Harrison gets, just a few years later when Ant asks out.

TSJ for me. He’s proven he can play. That’s not a given at 17 even with Connelly’s track record in the draft.
Plus, TSJ makes less than the 17 pick would for the next 3 years.

Re: POLL: Terrence Shannon Jr or the #17 Pick
My preferred outcome would be to keep both and not trade for Durant. If the trade actually happened and I had to choose before the draft I'd keep TSJ. On draft night I'd wait and see who was on the board at #17. I'd probably keep the pick over TSJ if Bryant, CMB, or an unexpected player from the top 12 were still available.

TSJ has the best chance to help us right now and looks like at worst he'll be a good bench player. Have to take that over a mid 1st rounder where most of those don't even get a 2nd contract.

I presume this deal would be made before we pick at 17.

Thanks for voting everyone!
So is this the correct way we’d rank the trade values of our young assets?
Rob Dillingham
Terrence Shannon Jr
#17
Jaylen Clark
#31
Leonard Miller
Josh Minott

I think that’s right. I do think Dilly is on the top of the list, but I’m not sure he’s in his own tier or maybe it’s just a very small tier break. I think some people’s view of him is anchored by being the #8 pick in a bad draft.
For example, would I rather have Dilly or Nolan Traore, who will probably be there at #17? Honestly, I don’t know. But I’m also down on Dillingham ever being good enough to be a starter on a championship level team where Traore has the length and frame (definitely not the strength currently though) to possibly be at least an adequate defender.

I still have hope for Miller. Prefer him to pick 31. I have Dilly and TSJ 1A and 1B.

Re: POLL: Terrence Shannon Jr or the #17 Pick
Thanks for the insight people!
One of the reasons I make polls like this is to keep me grounded. I post a lot on the Trade Board, and while I try to focus on what I think Tim Connelly will do, sometimes the far less important “what would shrink do?” leaks into my posts. I certainly don’t want readers to think my opinions carry extra weight just because they hear from me so often, and I especially don’t want that happening when neither Connelly, or the MIN board in general, disagrees with me on some wild take. Polls like this help me auto-correct, because in this poll, I was the sole “pick” voter!
———————-
My rationale is that having picks lets Tim Connelly use his best skill, draft evaluation, to generate assets for the team. He picked TSJ with the #27 pick, and you all think he is more valuable than #14. That’s profit. I look at that #17 pick in Tim Connelly’s hands and think there is a pretty good chance he finds someone that turns out to be in next year’s top 10 - maybe even a future star. And perhaps he trades that promising player for a top 6 pick ..?
Now, I understand the attachment to TSJ. He has performed well when given the chance for minutes in NBA games. He looks like he could be a rotation player next year, and (especially if we do the KD trade or lose NAW), we will need rotation players that will play minutes to help us contend. He’s also cheap for several years - he’s a good fit.
So I’m going to acquiesce to the masses on this one, and make proposals with the pick, hoping we can hold onto TSJ.

Re: POLL: Terrence Shannon Jr or the #17 Pick
KD is an avenue for failure. We don’t need him. We have major problems with the roster, and coaching staff.
Most important step is getting rid of Randle. If we get value back or don't, it doesn't matter. That is step no. 1.

You probably should have not mentioned the Kevin Durant element of the hypothetical, because people clearly can't separate it.
From my perspective, I think that I would keep Terrence Shannon Jr. because I value continuity and think that he has shown himself to clearly be a rotational player, which is extremely for someone who is on a rookie-scale contract for three more seasons.
