I had a dream!

Posted: Wed Jan 9, 2008 12:59 pm
by Dan's with the Wolves
The Wolves didn't trade Ray Allen for Stephon Marbury
The Wolves didn't let Chauncey Billups go to Detroit for nothing
The Wolves didn't draft Ndudi Ebi instead of Josh Howard
The Wolves didn't trade Joe Smith for Sam Cassell
The Wolves didn't trade Kevin Garnett for Al Jefferson

The lineup

PG Chauncy Billups
SG Ray Allen
SF Josh Howard
PF Kevin Garnett
C Joe Smith

It was a wonderful dream. Then I woke up.

Thanks Kevin McHale for ruining my dream.

Gee, let me try being a whiny 4-year old too!

I had a dream.

THe Wolves didn't draft Kevin Garnett in 95, but Ed O'Bannon
The Wolves didn't get Marbury in 96, but Lorenzen Wright
The Wolves didn't draft Rasho in 98, but took the next pick Mirsad Turkcan
The Wolves weren't able to trade Marbury, a star who demanded out, for Brandon and a lottery pick

The result?

Ten years of 60 loss seasons, just like the team McHale inherited.

Thanks Kevin McHale for starting a decade of Timberwolf relevance

Did this really need to be brought up again? I think we're all well aware of the mistakes and misfortunes as this discussion has been brought up hundreds of times over the last few years.

If The Wolves would have kept Chauncey. They wouldn't have needed Cassell. They wouldn't have traded for Marko.

When you woke up from that nightmare, the Wolves were 5 and 29.

Haha. I don't mind these types of threads as long as they don't turn into disgruntled ranting.

It's fun to do "what ifs" with the Wolves past.

I agree, and it doesnt even necessarily have to be about blame....could be just about bad luck (or good luck maybe, but in the case of the Wolves its usually bad luck).

In 1992 we got stuck with Laettner, even though we had the worst record and missed out on Shaq and Zo.

In 1993 we drafted JR Rider 5th, after Webber, Bradley, Penny, and Mashburn.

In 1994 we got Donyell Marshall 4th, after Big Dog Robinson, Kidd, and Hill.

I'm not sure how the lottery played out in 93 and 94 (i.e. did we "deserve" a higher pick or did we draft where our record indicated) but I do know that in the history of the franchise, we've never moved up in the lottery, only down.

What if the ping pong balls landed differently just once....with the exception of Bradley, all the guys listed above might have had the potential to change the entire direction of the franchise.

Man what if we were in a position to draft Kidd in 94 and still got KG
in 95!??!

Sometimes the "what ifs" are simply a good luck/bad luck thing.

I'll never forget missing out on Shaq and Zo. I was only four at the time but when i developed more of a love for basketball and i learned of this, I was furious to say the least.
