Thanks basti!
A couple comments since I last posted about this:
1. I've been trying to run down the exact amount amount of Juwon Howard buy-out. The only thing I can find is a quote by Glen Taylor that it's $10 mil (out of $14,259,300). I'm running with that. In a buy out, it breaks down in the same proportions as the original contract, so that means this year Juwon gets
2006-07: $4,827,586
.. and next year ..
2007-08: $5,172,414.
The amount I listed before was without any discount for the buy-out, so this news clears a little more valuable room under the lux for next year .. about $2.2 mil.
2. This post was in response to trade offers for Ratliff's expiring, but I tend to look at it like we have a certain amount of money we can use next season, and we can pluck things from the menu to buy them. The total money would be $11.7 (Ratliff) + $2.2 (Juwon buy-out savings) + $2.2 (assuming a lux around $68 mil) = $16 mil.
From that $16 mil, we can choose to pay for the following:
$3.3-$4.0 MIN 1st round Pick
$2.0-$3.0 MIA 1st round Pick
$0.43 MIN high 2nd round Pick
$3.5-$5.0 Ryan Gomes (extension)
$3.0-$4.0 Craig Smith (extension)
$3.54-?? Sebastian Telfair (qualifying offer)
$0.77 Chris Richard
??? Free agent signing with cba exceptions.
At this point, I don't know who's going to be valuable to our team next year. I want more time to decide, and the money gives us the financial flexibility. If you've decided "No way do we keep Telfair!" or someone else, it creates a lot more flexibility. The MIA pick is looking a lot less like a cost next season, and I don't think that's a bad thing. A Ratliff trade might work in these cases, particularly if we received some expirings back.
However you use it, the menu should be helpful of what we've got to spend, and how we want to use it.
Lastly, this link to canis hoopus might be useful to you too. Its helped me.
