Defensive minded C alongside Big Al

Ok, ladies and gentlemen, I got one.
He's big. He plays hard in the paint. He rebounds and blocks at a decent clip. He has a reasonable contract. He's from Minnesota.
Yep, that's right. Joel "Vanilla Gorilla" Przybilla!
And you know the best part? Portland doesn't need him, they have Oden, Frye, Aldridge, McRoberts. They're loaded. And they have a lot of players coming up from draft and over the ocean, so they'll need to cut somebody.
Simple arithmetic dictates that the Blazers will be trading either now or this summer. They are so attached to the 15 players on their roster that they wouldn't cut anyone to make room for a much-needed big man after Greg Oden went down. So that's 15 players they like (although Raef LaFrentz could be bought out, Taurean Green's contract is not guaranteed next year, and James Jones has a player option). Add to that three first-round draft picks of recent years stashed overseas -- Rudy Fernandez, Joel Freeland, and Petteri Koponen. This summer the team has a first-round pick, and three high-quality second-round picks. That's 22 players in the mix. If Portland doesn't trade any of them away, they'll be forced to make painful cuts at some point, while letting the competition scoop them up for free. GM Kevin Pritchard is known to be crafty, and I don't think anyone expects him to let good players fall into the hands of other teams without compensation. The only remedy is to deal now or on draft day, and at the moment, thanks to a convincing winning jag, much of the roster is more valuable than ever.
Portland fans are also not opposed to a idea of trading him.

And if we actually trade for Przybilla, we can draft the BPA on the draft, which is also very important.

what would they want? I assume they'd want a SF but I'm not so sure anymore after webster and outlaw became at least very very solid. I'd do a gomes for joel p. swap maybe

MIN GETS: Joel Przybilla and Taurean Green
POR GETS: Micheal Doleac and Greg Buckner
I'm not convinced on Joel but I think this is a fair offer for POR. Doleac can play occasional back-up minutes for POR, and expires so his contract doesn't get in the way of Odom next season. It also creates a roster spot for a team that will need it next season. Doleac's expiring deal saves POR, who's over the lux, a little money next season. Buckner aligns with the POR fans goal of getting max money for free agency in 2009, and removes Przybilla's 4-year deal. Taurean Green will probably be cut by POR next season for a roster spot.
For MIN, I'm reluctant. Pryzbilla makes $2.3 mil more than Buckner in 2009, and we'd lose Doleac's $3.1 expiring, so that's $5.4 of our limited cap space gone. Przybilla averages $6.6 mil, and his contract is Jaric-lengthed. I need to learn more about him before I'd sign onto a deal for him. Maybe I'll ask my daughter's teacher at our parent-teacher conference on Wednesday -- he coached him in high school!

yep shrink's trade is nice though I doubt POR would take it. put in on the trade board maybe?

Its not worth posting. Almost every POR poster universally thinks every POR player is a star, and that their GM is uniquely unconcerned with money.

to be fair I think Przybilla has more value than expiring + Buckner
However, I think Przybilla makes too much to justify his standing w/ Oden, Frye and Aldridge in front of him, all expirings may tempt them
Doleac/GG. Maybe throw in one of those high 2nd rounders

1. Przybilla is carrying a Jaric contract. Do his numbers justify it?
Przybilla: 20.8 MIN, 7.1 RPG, 0.4 APG, 4.8 PPG, +10.39 EFF
2. Is that even better than Jaric?
3. If Jaric's expensive to MIN, POR is well over the lux, so they are paying double.
4. Would we take Doleac (exp) and Buckner (2 yr) for Jaric? I think so.

I think it is an interesting concept. Doleac+Buckner+2nd should at least get interest from them. Considering it cuts cap and such. But I am sure that they are waiting for Oden to return.
I would rather try and get Frye if portland is selling.

I agree with Rev, if Portland is moving any bigs I would jump on grabbing Frye.
I'm sure its been talked about before but if there was a chance at grabbing Emeka Okefor from the bobcats with a sign and trade I would jump all over it. He is a little undersized but plays above average defense and could be a good fit next to Big Al. It's most likely impossible but if we could get them to resign him and we still had theos expring or next year use walker and bukner. I would be willing to deal most any of our picks or future pics along with it.
We get a great defensive big on this team and its ready to roll.

I guess we differ. I used to spend a ton of time reading all of the theories for coming up with a reliable formula for measuring defensive effectiveness, and a lot from 82games.com. After all that time, the conclusion I came to was -- "who knows?" And believe me, it was hard for me to admit there was something numbers wouldn't quantify.
I asked on the Player Comparison board a month ago for people to rank the Top Ten Defensive Centers (not even "players'") in the league. Nobody that I remember even put Pryzbilla in their top ten.
So I was left in the lurch. I don't have the skills to make the judgement, and the numbers don't make the judgement.
If you guys all tell me, "Yeah, Przybilla is so valuable defensively, that even with no offense at all (he can't even put back more offensive boards?!?) is worth that contract," I'll believe you. Its hard for me though, since I'm not an X-and-O's guy, to believe those numbers justify that contract, but my mind is not closed on it.

FYI -- With POR's tight roster, normally a second rounder who can be stashed in Europe, and not affect roster size or finances, would be very attractive. However, I think POR has like 5 of them next season already.
