That deadline has past, and Gerald Green is now a unrestricted free agent.

I don't agree with the decision, but at the time, I could see the point. MIN didn't know who they'd want to bring back, and even now, many people want to bring back all three of our restricted free agents, Gomes, Telfair and Smith, and many want Chris richard to return as well. Adding in the salary for next year's lottery pick is still going to be a very tight squeeze under the lux. However, at the time, everyone thought we'd also be having to add another guaranteed salary, MIA's 1st.

Now, I would have signed Green for the $2.5, thinking that he's demonstrated enough on athleticism alone that he'd be worth the gamble, and we could also bail out since someone would be willing to trade an expiring for him. However, if we got stuck, he'd have cost a lot more than $2.5 mil. His salary would have been doubled over the lux (+$2.5) and then it could also cost us our share of the lux pie .. another 2.0 mil.

So is Green worth $2.5? I'd say yes.

Is he worth $7.0? Nope.

I know the deadline has passed, I was just whining :)

It just seems like with the direction our team is going, and Shaddy looking more and more like he isnt part of our long eterm future, that you just take a gamble on Gerald. Especially with us probably being below the cap next year.

Case in point, some guys just take 5 years or more to develop. The above are two examples. While I dont expect Green to get anywhere near the productivity of Gerald Wallace, not taking a 1 year gamble is flat out stupid. Its not a long term investment, and Geralds a guy you can market, especially with the dunk contest coming up.
