Telfair's jumpshot

Post#1 » by jdub114 » Mon Feb 11, 2008 5:58 am

Ive watched him all his years in the league and he is playing the best basketball of his career but his jump shot is getting really annoying. Every year his jump shot tends to get progressively worse as the season goes on. He starts off the year with a smooth stroke and hits at a decent clip but then after a couple of weeks it disappears.

What is the reason for this? Does he stop practicing it as much when the season begins or something else?

UGLY...It's lack of confidence, he needs to work as hard as Brew-Crew does.

He didn't start out the year strong shooting, either. November was bad, December was good, January was good, February so far is atrocious.

Im not going by the percentages because that takes all shots into account...Im commenting on his mid and long range J which has been on a steady decline.

Confidence is a big thing for any young player. I assume that is it, and it should get at least average. Just give it time.

Like my coach always told me: "You can teach a monkey to shoot a ball and he will make it consistently with time and practice."

hid mid-range games looks okay to me. He just needs to add some range so he can hit the open three.

47-107 .439 FG / 8-20 .400 3-pt in November
73-190 .384 FG / 3-26 .115 3-pt in December
52-132 .394 FG / 9-36 .250 3-pt in January
7-29 .241 FG / 0-4 .000 3-pt in February
179-425 .391 FG / 20-86 .233 3-pt This year so far

2-pt FG accuracy this year so far is .427

3.25 AST/TO ratio so far this year
15.0 AST/TO ratio in February so far :D

I have no complaints about his FG%, close to 40% is acceptable to me.
Who knows how good it would be if he finished better. Maybe 45%?

23% is unacceptable, especially when he takes 2 threes a game. He doesn't need to take less, he needs to make more of them. We already have Corey to pass up wide open shots.

40% could be fine if Telfair was contested all the time, but he's practically 40% on open shots. I wonder what his % is on 2 point jump shots (ie not layups)

40% would be fine if he was taking/making a lot of 3s, but the guy has a .45 TS% which is flat out horrible (and always has been). It's my biggest concern with Telfair, because if he doesn't improve to at least the point where he's passably bad shooting the ball, I can't see him being anything more than a 3rd string PG on a good team. You can't play **** defense and shoot low percentages in the NBA and expect to have a positive impact. He's an excellent floor general, underrated in that regard in my opinion, but the rest of his game is sorely sorely lacking.

This isn't quite what you're looking for, but he has an eFG% of.386 on all jumpers. With a bit of effort you could remove 3 point shots from that number and find out his actual 2 point jumper FG%, but I'm too lazy.

More stats -
Right now Allen Iverson has a 2-pt fg % of .447 for his career which is 2% above Sebastian this year.
Chris Paul has a 2-pt FG % of .507 this year (if I remember correctly from a couple minutes ago)

Sebastian and Chris are both 22 years old.

I'm just worried that Telfair has yet to improve his FG% in his fourth year in the league.
Thriving on mediocrity since '89.

I've been pleasantly surprised with his defense this year - it's not good yet, but it's not bad at all.
