I've always disliked just about anything associated with Benilde-St. Margaret's, but this is one of the most hilarious trade developments ever.

Didn't he say earlier in the season that he wanted to either play or be traded?
Either way, Mavs fans should not be mad about this. They were giving up too much for Kidd. Although I am sure they will just tweak the deal to exclude George.

Also, the more everyone in the West gets old and shifts all the young players to the East.

I agree 100%. Dallas is sacrificing their future big time for a feeble attempt at a championship. Does anyone really think they have a chance to win even if the trade does goe through? Devin Harris is a solid player and losing Diop will hurt when they have to play against Phoenix and LA. And two futures 1sts? I can't see why Dallas would make this trade....

All they have to do is sign Keith Van Horn to make up the salary gap, just like the Lakers used McKie in the Gasol deal. If Cuban wants the deal to go through, it will. In fact, new word is that George may agree -- he just can't get a hold of his agent right now.
In any event, I admire George for saying "no." He signed the short deal because he wanted to play in DAL for a ring, and his family lives there. He's facing a lot of pressure to halt this deal.

Yeah that's awesome that he did that. Benilde-St. Margaret, we beat them in true team track in 06. Yeah I'm livin in the past. (They're a private school that can recruit, so I just had to say that....)

If I was a Dallas fan I'd be upset. Harris is a nice player, Diop is a role player (that we covet) and the draft picks are late 1st round. They didn't really give up that much in my mind.
On one hand I think George is kind of a jerk. You get paid well for being a pro-athlete and part of the trade off for a multi-million dollar contract is where you'll have to live is uncertain. On the other hand, if he got it in his contract that they need to check with him and they didn't or he didn't want to, bravo. It's not like he's saying he won't report to block a trade, he's got it in his contract.
Interesting to say the least, but I'm sure they'll just use Van Horn as an expiring.

It really is a no-brainer for him, and Dallas was arrogant or ignorant to put him into this kind of possition. He loses his Bird rights if he's traded; with Bird rights intact, he's probably looking at another $2mil deal at the end of the season. Without them, he's borderline out of the NBA.

Agree with deeney. George isnt being a dick at all, he has every right to do this to protect his Bird rights. Its not unique to him, but any NBA player who signed a one-year deal to get Bird rights has this option (I think I read there are like 18 guys in the league in this situation right now). The rule is there for a reason.
But having said that, its a moot point really. If he gets his wish and stays in Dallas (no matter if Kidd eventually gets there in another deal or not) I seriously doubt Dallas will resign him this summer anyway.

When I read the headline I literally laughed out loud. Way to go George! Mavs got Geigered!

I think this is a miscalculation on George's part. There was a pretty good chance he wasn't going to get a contract beyond this year anywhere anyway, given he has been bad in Dallas ever since he got there. Teams are probably even less likely to sign him if means they have to pay him more money.

I don't think it's a miscalculation for him. He'd go from not playing on a contender to not playing on a borderline playoff team in the East. Also, I've read that he's got his family in Dallas now, if he doesn't want to uproot them and can stop it from happening, more power to him. I don't think it was a "I need to keep the Early Bird rights" thing as much as it was a "I'd rather be in Dallas than New Jersey" thing.

Miscalculation? I think for squelching this deal, George's gotten thank you notes with $500,000 checks in them from the spurs, the suns, the lakers ....

^LOL, seriously its amazing what getting scraps on a championship team can do for your career. I don't think he gets past his rookie contract if it weren't for the Lakers.

Since the Kidd deal is becoming unlikely (per Wiretap), what about a swap of George for McCants and a swap of their first for one of our seconds? Gives us an extra expiring contract, and moves us up a few spots so we can get the guy we want. I think George would want to come back to MN where he spent his college days.
