Anyone heard about this Beasley kid? I'm thinking he might be a nice sleeper.

Thabeet is starting to elevate his game more everytime I see him. I don't see him in the top 4, but I would love to acquire another pick in the early first to add him as well.

Anyone think we might offer Miami's pick or some other package on draft day to acquire a player like Thabeet?

If we end up with a someone like Hibbert early, I would like to trade up and try to nab Blake Griffin if he comes out.

How does Griffin fit in with Big Al?

I think he could work at the in limited minutes at the 3 in a big lineup. Big al will still be getting some minutes at C so then you slide him to his natural position at that point. Hes got the athleticisim and his range seems to be expanding. I think we could let Gomes walk in this scenario.

OK, here's a question for some of you guys who point to Beasely's monstrous college production as the main reason why we should draft him (assuming we get the top pick)...

Do you rate Bayless higher on your draft board than Rose? I mean, if you use the logic above to rate Beasely, why not do the same for Bayless and Rose?

I have a feeling many of you have Rose higher on your draft boards than Bayless.

doesn't seem like the most efficient way to use the assets that we have.

Blake or Gomes + Draft Pick? I'll take the latter.

You also consider physical attributes. Rose is a better athlete and concievably has more potential than Bayless. Rose is also the starting point guard and 2nd leading scorer for the #1 team in the country. Rose hasn't exactly been a flop in college.
You have to consider potential, production, current skill level, and need.

Bayless averages two more field goals and two more Free throws a game, which could be a potential six/eight more points.

I must admit, I have Rose higher on my list partly from media hype, he was touted as the best physical specimen they have seen in a guard. They have also said he is the fasted player they have scouted in college, ever. They must have not seen Iverson at GeorgeTown, but i'm not complaining with those high praises from Rose. I also like him because he plays better defense and is a pass first player.

Bayless: 21.1/2.8/4.4 .. 1.1steals. 3TO
Rose: 13.6/4.3/4.2 .. 1.2 3TO

Bayless is the #1 option
Rose is the #2 option

I'm not pleased with Rose's shooting percentages: 44.6FG, 31.3 3PT, 68.8FT Percentages.

It's close though, both guards would help this team, but Rose just has my vote; I see him getting Kidd like triple-doubles every two weeks or so in his prime.

Rose's passing has been no different than Bayless...its all drive and kick...... and scouts like Bayless's commitment to defense.

Rose is all about potential now, theres no question who the better player has been thus far.

Thabeet is too high on that list. I would switch Lopez with Thabeet...and then probably bump Thabeet down a few more.

btw, a follow up to my first report on Drake's basketball team (my school):

Klayton Korver - an absolutely WORTHLESS player. I can't believe he's starting. Despite his shooting % (mind bogglingly bad), I thought I just saw him on an off night the first time. Ooooooh baby is he bad at basketball. The one thing he did well was draw offensive fouls vs. Bradley. Other than that, NOTHING! He isn't a particularly good defender, he's a Korver, so not exactly all that athletic and the one thing you would think he WOULD have (shooting), is maybe his biggest weakness of all. He feels the compulsion to jack up every shot he gets and miss time after time and keep jacking. He could be 0-8 on the game and he'll still take an NBA-distance 3 instead of passing the ball to someone with a better shot. He has NO business starting on any team and will NEVER make any NBA summer league team (unless it's by name alone, though you wouldn't think "Korver" is a prestigious enough name to do so). Oh, and down 1 with 4.3 seconds to go Korver is 3-12 for the game and Keno Davis draws up a play to run Korver off a double screen and free him up for a long jump shot to try to win the game. ARE YOU FREAKING SERIOUS???? It was maybe one of the most ill conceived final possessions I've ever seen. In essence Klayton Korver cannot defend, cannot play offense and isn't athletic.

Josh Young - he's got an incredible scoring instinct, but he needs to pack on some muscle to have any hope to be an Eddie House type player. Even still, his bball iq concerns me. Usually we just want him to score the ball and that's about it, so bball iq is not an issue, but the one time he had to make a big decision (or really had to NOT make a decision) he screwed up royally. We were up 1 point and our PG missed a driving lay-up at the end of the shot clock. We got the offensive board and passed it out to him with the shot clock and game clock almost exactly even. We could have run out the clock and won. He immediately takes a contested deep 3 without a second thought, clangs rim, Bradley scores and then Keno Davis draws up the worst final play ever conceived and we lose.

Jonathan Cox - Same as what I said last time - not big enough or strong enough to be a big man in the NBA and not quick enough to be a wing. Maybe he can be a bench player in Europe. He's 6'8" and he's got a smooth jump shot, but not much for back to the basket.

Leonard Houston - had a quiet game, grabbed some nice offensive boards.

Our biggest problem is that we aren't athletic enough or physically powerful enough. It's disappointing seeing our strongest/most athletic player sitting on the bench all game long. Alex White is his name I guess...I don't know why he doesn't play. It could be that he's that bad, but I have trouble believing that he doesn't deserve playing time over Korver.

Numbers are vain, it is how he is scoring. Many of the skills he has right now translate to the NBA. His ability to hit the mid range jumper, his strength, his desire/nose for offensive rebounds.

I have an issue with drafting a pg. I simply do not want a project pg. Chris Paul and Deron Williams were proven. They had the mental game down. So much of PG is mental. Not physical (John stockton was one of the best, Steve nash is now) Personally I think Bassy has worlds of potential and is only 22. Foye looks decent in spurts. Sign a damn vet and roll with those guys.

My draft board. Here it was (feb 3)

revprodeji wrote:I guess I should do my "draft board" couple things to consider

--I am not ready to jump into Beasley. Like I said before. He is either #1 or not on the list. My foot is dipped in the water, but I am not jumping in.
--Foye needs to be given more time to see if he is capable of playing the lead guard or if he is a combo guard.
--I wish I knew what the front office was going to do with Gomes. Reason I ask is Greene moves up if we are not resigning Gomes.
Those 3 things need to be addressed before I am able to make a proper draft board, I will assume that we will have the 4th or worse, so I can ignore the top 3

-Beasley/Rose will likely be the top 2 selections. So unless we "strike it rich" we do not need to consider either guy. # 3 is based on who gets it.

(not in order)

-Mayo
-Lopez
-Hibbert
-Love (If he is 6'10 I am interested)
-Greene (Notice the Gomes talk about)

-Guys not on my list
-Gordon (I think he is redundent with Shad and I like what I see from Shad. To me Gordon needs to prove he can be a big scorer at this level)
-Jordan (His sex appeal for potential is tarnished with how raw he looks. I personally feel he should spend another year in college. If he starts playing better and comes out for the draft I will need to consider him)
-Jerryd Bayless (combo guard, no need to repeat the Foye thing)
-Chase Budinger (just does not do it for me)
-Kosta Koufos (soft, no defense. I do not want him)

-Guys I will admit I do not know enough about
-Danilo Gallinari ( seems like a tweener, but do not know him)
-Nicolas Batum ( I do like what I hear about him)

What has changed is that I think with the #1 we need to take a gamble on Beasley. I just kind of think it is a serious gamble. But it could really pay off. Why Beasley?
1.) We are talking if we get the #1 overall. Chances of this is rare, so the discussion itself might be in vain.

2.) I have always said Beasley is the biggest risk/reward in the draft. He has loads of potential but also has the biggest red flags. Check to the beginning of this thread even. I have just said it is not worth the risk.

3.) Certain poster's naive man-crush for Beasley put me off of him as well. If there is anything I can not stand more in the sports discussion it is the groupie that contributes nothing but temper and cannot be talked with or reasoned with. That attitude fed into my attitude concerns with Beasley, At a subconscious level anyway.

4.) Besides the off the court stuff my other concerns about Beasley were his defensive desire and his ability to score from the 3 (spot not line). He has really improved from both of these perspectives. I saw a glipse of Beasley's ability to score from the 3 spot in france and I was waiting for that this year. Showing the desire to improve and with his age I think the reward is starting to outweigh the risk. He clearly has the most pure talent and "it" of any player in this draft.

5.) The argument for a 5 is known, and still very valid, but also what is being seen is the need for a legit #2/#1 offensive option from the wing to play with Al. Foye *could* be this option, but might be better set as a 3rd. Shad *could* but might be better as a 6th man spark plug. A line up of
center/Al/Beasley/Brewer/Foye
is interesting, if we want to play some small ball we can throw Gomes or shad into the spot.

Personally I hope we somehow (trade/trade down, etc) end up with a big that can play next to Al (Hibbert/Lopez/Thabeast/love)

I also have fallen out of love with the young pg's. Rose could be good, or he could never understand the mental side of the game. I personally see Bayless as very similar to Foye. I would rather develop out young pg (Bassy/Foye) then bring another in next year if neither improves. Ricky Rubio has a better BBIQ then ROse or Bayless

Mayo has slipped a little bit for me also. Not as a prospect, but for this team. I do not think there is enough seperation in skill from Shad/Foye to Mayo. Mayo appears to be a guy who will make a nice #2 or #3 scorer from the 2, but so could FOye or Shad. I personally would rather bring in a 5 or a 3 and move Brewer to the 2 on defense.

I noticed this draft class has a lot of legit talent at the 4-5 spot. Some of it is attractive, some is smoke and mirrors.

I still like Lopez and Hibbert. Love is based on his conditioning and if he is more of a 6'10 or 6'8. Thabeast looks good, but remember Kenny George is getting 4 blks a game also. Thabeast still does not run the motor for the whole game and would be a bigger project then Leon Smith for the offensive game.

Donte Green has all the potential in the world. I worry he is becoming content with shooting the long range, but he is growing and could be an offensive talent similar to Beasley. Personally I hope he stays another year (Same as Jordan,Griffin, Speights, Koufos, Ogilvy and McGee)

SO assuming everyone comes out this year. Here is my draft board. red means it is their value, but I would rather not want them and I would look for a team crushing on them to trade with.

1.) Beasley (Like I said, either he is #1 or not on the board)
2.) Rose (If he stays a year and gains the mental he is the clear #1, but right now he is potential, and pg's need more than potential)
3.) Lopez (sometimes too passive, but otherwise prototype of what we want next to Al)
4.) Bayless (same as rose, also more of a combo right now)
5.) Gordon (undersized Ben Gordon does nothing for me)
6.) Greene (Beasley-lite, kid could be a stud if he wants to. Hopefully not a Tim Thomas)
7.) Hibbert (You all know my thoughts)
8.) Nicolas Batum (I am learning more, Rudy-Gay like prospect/Dominate roll player. Problem is desire to be great and consistancy. A lil soft. Second biggest risk/reward in the draft to Beasley)
9.) Danilo Gallinari (screams tweener, but is a clear go-to guy. Remember what Lamar Odom was like coming out of Rhode Island?)
10.) Mayo (not a need spot, but if we had a second pick and he slipped I would consider)
11.) Love (rumor has it he is closer to 6'10 and that makes me excited-not a sexy pick, but will be very good as a pro)
12.) Thabeast (his BBIQ, Motor and offensive skill worries me. His ability to defend a more physical player worries me. What he will do in the NBA without the true college zone worries me also. That being said his timing for shot blocking and speed for a 7ft are amazing)
13.) Jordan (needs another year, right now he is slipping faster than anyone not named Britney)
14.) Griffin ( Should be higher on the list, but I have not seen enough to know if he is a legit future stud at the 5 or a more physical Spencer Hawes. he needs a jumper and strenght. Another year and he is top3)
15.) Augustine (If we needed a pg I would go here, if we think we are going to lose Bassy we should move to get him or singletary in the second)
16.) Psycho T (Putting Beasley like numbers up on a top-5 team. What else does he need to do? I see a lot of Horace Grant here)
17.) Hardin (good defender, but is his rebounding consistant and offensive game existing?)
18.) Bill Walker (attitude and knee is a concern, also is he a 2 or 3)
19.) Jawai (project, but a nice one)
20.) CDR (could move up, but goofy style and wondering if he is a product of the system)
21.) Arthur (not sure how he would fit with Al, but he is talented)
22.) Koufos (mark Blount)
23.) Budinger (run away)

Clearly in this draft I would love to have a mid-late 1st rd pick in order to move up and get one of the bigs that fall.

Maric is the most under-rated player around 15-17 2 steals 2 blocks against Beasley's team

In case you guys didn't know, I am making a case for Rose over Beasley. I'm just trying to play devil's advocate. A lot of you always point to Beasley's huge stat lines and make that your argument for taking him #1 overall. I've never heard anything about Rose not being smart enough or lacking the mental capacity to play PG, I don't know why you're bringing it up now.

Deron Williams had 3 years in college. Chris Paul had 2. Paul's freshman year numbers are very comparable to Rose's numbers with the exception of 3PT%. Rose's numbers are comparable to Williams' sophomore numbers.

We have plenty of guys who can create their own shots. Foye can get his. Rashad can blow by his man when he wants to, or he can shake and bake for an open J. What we need, IMO, is a distributing PG. A guy who can create shots for others so that when guys like Jefferson or McCants get the ball, its not a black hole.

Telfair is a bench player. A decent backup, but I think its safe to say that at this point in his career, he's not going to ever be the lead guard for a good playoff team. His jumper is just too unreliable and his defense can be shaky. Then you can top that off with his inability to finish or even attempt a shot at the rim. Telfair was simply a throw-in for the KG trade. I'm not hating on Telfair, I've seen him have his moments, ala the game in Boston, but I just don't see him being the long term answer at point guard.

I'll be honest, if we end up with either player, I'd be happy. But if we have a choice between the two, I hope its Rose.
