An Offseason Possibility

OK, heres a thought. I have no idea where any of this would put us with the luxury tax, but I like the idea.

Free Agents

Telfair - Let Go
Gomes - Let Go
Smith - Resign
Snyder - Resign
Richard - Resign
Doleac - Let go

Draft

1st round - Derrick Rose
2nd round - Backup big (preferrably Dorsey)
2nd round - Goran Dragic (or other Euro)

Depth Chart

Rose / Jaric / ???????
Foye / McCants / Buckner
Brewer / Snyder / Walker
Smith / Dorsey / Madsen
Jefferson / ????? / Richard

We have two roster spots to fill. Maybe we won't fill them both. I think with one we take a flier on O'Bryant and make him our backup center. As for the other, I'm not sure we'll fill it.

Maybe make a trade of Walker, Buckner, or Jaric could be made. One possibility: Walker for Snow.

Rose / Jaric / Snow
Foye / McCants / Buckner
Brewer / Snyder
Smith / Dorsey / Madsen
Jefferson / O'Bryant / Richard

Thoughts?

1. I would think that Cleveland would definitely not do the expanded trade. Not because it's necessarily a bad trade, but because Marshall now plays for the Seattle Supersonics.

2. I think that it has been pretty well established that Smith and Jefferson don't work well together, especially not as starters. The rest of the roster looks good to me, though. (However, I'm not really in love with lack of size at the 2, and if it came down to it, I'd keep Gomes over Smith.)

i really only have two problems with this..

-not really ready to let gomes go.
-it is looking doubtful that we will get rose in the draft, unless we get lucky in the lottery.

otherwise looks good.

I'd prefer not to get smaller when this team is already too small.

How have we gotten smaller?

There are a lot of possibilities of what could go down for next year.

Overall, I think the team really needs to get bigger, and there are free agents, young and old, that I think the Wolves could use:

Patrick O'Bryant
DeSegana Diop
Robert Swift

The FO could even let all our free agents walk and sign Okafor or J. O'Neal if they're ambitious enough. I'm a fan of Diop and I think he's young, big and defensive enough to play on any team as a starting center given proper minutes

However, if O'Neal or Okafor aren't signed by the Wolves, I think that resigning Gomes and Telfair are priorities, but only if they're willing to maybe take on a backup role. I never really liked Telfair before this year, but after seeing the great numbers he's put up on the team really makes me think he's a keeper. Gomes is also very solid for a low 2nd round pick.

I have no problem letting Doleac, Smith, and Snyder walk if they resign Gomes and Telfair. If Snyder could be resigned for cheap, I say they should pull the trigger on that one. Every team needs a stat-stuffer like him.

Jaric, Buckner and Walker could sit on the bench all season. Buy out Madsen and ask him to take a job with the coaching staff or another spot in the organization.

Now, if the Wolves draft a big to play with Jefferson, I still think they should sign a prospect like O'Bryant. Assuming they resign Telfair and Gomes:

Foye/Telfair/Jaric
McCants/Foye/Jaric
Brewer/Gomes/Jaric
Jefferson/Gomes/Draft pick
Lopez or Love or Hibbert or Thabeet/O'Bryant/Jefferson

I'm a firm believer that Jefferson would play best if he played his natural position at power forward. A few minutes at center aren't bad, but he would thrive in his normal spot and it would especially help to take some defensive pressure off of him.

If the Wolves draft Rose and resign Gomes, they wouldn't have to resign Telfair, but maybe resign Smith or Richard:

Rose/Foye/Jaric
Foye/McCants/Jaric
Brewer/Gomes/Jaric
Jefferson/Smith/Richard
FA or later draft pick/Richard

If the Wolves draft Mayo and resign Gomes, resign Telfair AND Smith or Richard:

Foye/Telfair/Jaric
Mayo/McCants/Jaric
Brewer/Gomes/Jaric
Jefferson/Smith/Richard
FA or later draft pick/Richard

My brain is overflowing with creative ideas and possibilities. Maybe I'm just excited since I don't have to go to work this week. :D

^good job Gunny. I was just thinking about doing a similar post, now I don't have to. :)

Haha, thanks. I'm trying to make up by making my low post count by typing quality posts.

This one doesn't count, though. 8)

Obviously it all depends on how the draft shakes out, but if we somehow got Rose I'd be thrilled.

I'd want to keep Gomes as I've been really impressed with him this year, whether he's a starter or key reserve I think he deserves a spot.

I think having Al and Smith start is the too small part of the discussion. I think Smith works best as a backup in certain matchups.

As far as Okafor and J.O., I'm not a capologist, but believe even if we didn't re-sign our free agents, we wouldn't have enough money to make a competitive offer due to us still having the Walker, Howard, and Hudson contracts on the books. I think a S&T would be the only way to land anyone for more than the MLE this offseason.

At the very least, you did nothing serious to get bigger when that's got to be one of the goals this offseason.

I was just about to say that.

Letting Gomes walk is stupid. Unless he wants too much money. Try and trade him at least.

Diop would be an interesting fit. He's the athletic defender at the 5 who would make Jefferson the player he can and should be. I don't think we're going to win the lottery (to me that means getting 1 or 2) but even if we end up with Lopez or Mayo there's a place on this roster for a post defender like Diop.
