If You Draft Rose, You Must Trade Foye, Play Brewer at 2.

Post#1 » by DerrickRose23 » Thu Apr 10, 2008 6:42 pm

I really think that if you draft Rose you'd have two 6'4 guards, and thus a big Point guard (which is a reason He is such an elite prospect, because of his size).

I think having a lineup that goes 6'4 and 6'9 in the backcourt (rose and Brewer could be extremely suffocating defensively.

You trade Foye for a player like Marvin Williams (throw in the heat pick if you must), Jeff Green (if they draft Beasley), or Thaddeus Younf to give them less sf/sg types.. Put McCants in the deal (not as a throw in but as something else maybe getting Law IV, Carney, or Sene back

there you would have a team of
Rose 6'4
Brewer 6'9
Williams/Green/Young 6'8/6'9
Jefferson 6'10
FA Center ?

That team would be really big and be able to bully a lot of teams, especially when Brewer puts some meat on his bones..

I think if you draft Rose, you have to trade foye, or you risk a Gordon/Hinrich situation poppin up in the future.

If we do draft guard, I think we'd HAVE to trade either Foye or Mccants. If you held a gun to my head, id say Mccants gets traded, and we move up to draft a big defensive rook like thabeet or robin lopez.

Or atleast that makes sense. especially with the obvious feud it appears mccants is having with wittman.

I think Foye and Mayo/Rose would make a pretty good backcourt. 2 guys capable of running the PG at any time, and have size to boot. Adding a big via a foye/mccants trade is more vital to me tho, itd move gomes and jefferson back to their positions. Brewer is still a bench player IMHO.

Trade McCants for a pick in the teens, pray to the heavens Brewer gains weight and have him play the 3.

PG - Rose
SG - Foye
SF - Brewer
PF - Jefferson
C - Hardin or Thabeet :) (Dream pick, defensive presence)

I'd trade McCants. I don't mind having Foye come off the bench.

Meh. I don't want to retool our whole team. However you're right, drafting Rose kind of forces the hand.

If we have the opportunity, I'd take Beasley over Rose anyway. Resign Gomes and Telfair and trade McCants/other assests for another pick to select a big. Perhaps try to bring Snyder back and bring on POB too.

I like this roster better:

Foye/Telfair
Brewer/Foye/Snyder
Beasley/Gomes/Brewer
Jefferson/Gomes/Beasley
POB/(Draft Pick: McVee, Jordan, Thabeet, Hibbert, Etc)/Jefferson

Well, Rose/Brewer would be suffocating on D, yes. But that would possibly give us the worst shooting backcourt in the history of the NBA. Teams would simply sag off them and make it very difficult to get the ball into Al, or worse , simply play a zone and make us shoot over the top.

I still say that if we take Rose we use a three guard rotation of Rose/Foye/McCants (assuming McCants doesn't force the Twolves hands by refusing to be a sixth man). No reason Foye can't swing from SG to PG, and a Rose/Foye defensive backcourt would be just fine. Foye is strong enough where taller SG's won't be able to just back him down into the post (at least not many).

Trade McCants not foye. Better backcourts imo

Brewer + Rose (starting + great D)
Jaric + Foye (2nd unit + great D)
Rose + Foye (scoring punch and matches well vs small backcourts + great D on smaller players)
Brewer + Jaric (Great D)
Jaric + Rose (Great D)

I like a rotation of: Foye\Rose\Jaric\Brewer

Foye taking minutes at the 2 & 3
Rose all PG minutes
Jaric playing 1,2,3
Brewer playing 2,3

Trading McCants makes the most sense as he's less versatile, and less dominate at his natural position. Foye is somewhat dominant vs other PG's because of his size. He is undersized vs 2's, but brewer & jaric can negate those situations defensively.

Foye could return more value than McCants, but not enough to justify trading him unless he returns a pick in the 5-10 range. Which he certainly wont. In this years draft there arent any players that would tempt me enough for Foye straight up. In a situation Where MN gets rose, randolph could tempt me.

<5>
Al
Randolph
Brewer
Rose

or

al
Randolph
Brewer
<2>
Rose

I think most MN fans would give up McCants for a 5 in this years draft. Not because of talent upgrade just because of roster balance.

Good point.

We can't throw the ball to Al each time with our starting lineup, we need to have Foye out there as a 2nd option. I'd rather trade McCants than Foye because at least Foye can maintain poise and not commit stupid fouls that will send him to the bench early.

To be honest though, it would be great keeping both of them around, with McCants coming off the bench like he has this year.

Yeah, McCants would be the one to go IMHO. Roll with Rose-Foye-Jaric-Brewer next year and see what happens. If perimeter scoring is a glaring need, we have potentially 3 first rounders next year. We should be able to find a scoring SG (easier than finding a franchise PG).

if I had to trade one of foye and mccants only on talent I guess I'd trade foye because I love mccants's ability to get to the rim, shoot and to get on fire withtin a few posessions. too bad he doesn't seem to use it properly. and if he really wants it he also can do some play-making

I'm not a fan of combo guards so I think I'd rather have mccants playing the 2 spot than randy doing it.

but on the other side, it would make more sense to trade rashad because I think his value is higher than randy's after being out for half a year and still finding his old shape.

A Rose/Brewer backcourt sounds sweet defensively, but I'd be worried about it offensivley. With Jefferosn we have to play half court sets. The biggest weakness of Rose and Brewer is their inability to shoot the ball.

We need Foye or Mccants in there to stretch the D otherwise teams will just clog the middle taking away Rose/Brewer slashing game and Al/Craigns inside game.

Ideally, if we draft Rose, we need a starting 2 guard who can stretch the D, and if Brewer's at the three we need a backup 3 who can sink 3's as well.

Notice how Nash and Paul are surrounded by shooters? Notice how much better Denver got when they brought in Korver? Notice how much better Oralndo got this year by spreading the offense with shooters around Howard?

I don't think you have to trade anyone right away. I was Brew at the 3. I see him as a SF. You move Foye to the two and play Rose at the 1. Bring Shad off the bench. IF after the first season it is apparent that we need to make a deal we trade Foye or McCants. I don't think we trade either of them until we see what we got with all three players.

Foye weighs 215 according to NBA.com, Isn't that big enough to guard most 2 guards?

Problem there is McCants value would be sharply diminished. He only has one year left on his deal once this season is complete, we would not be able to get fair value for him mid-season.

The last thing we want to see is McCants walk away for nothing.

Who's to say his value will be diminished? Shad could have a great year and his value could increase? I think it's likely he will get better before he gets worse? We all know he is a dynamic scorer and could be a very good player.

Unless you know something I don't and Rashad is unhappy on the wolves or being cancerous I would assume he would improve. If he averages around 18 PPG next year I think a lot of teams will take a look at him during the dead line.

Also we need to look at who we are bringing in in a trade. Do we want another guard? A pick? Depending on the situation letting him walk may not be such a disaster.

On top of all of this we may not even need to trade him if he is happy and productive. McCants or Foye may be willing to fill that 6th man role for us. In fact we aren't even certain if everything will pan out for Brew at this point.
