I love the deal, as like someone pointed out, we're looking for any number of things in the draft, and the prospects from 3-6 all depends on which team is drafting. There's no clear picks after the top 2, in the top 10.
Here's our mock for Wolves needs...
3. Mayo
4. Lopez
5. Randolph
6. Gallinari
7a. Jordan
7b. Bayless
I would assume that the Cippers take local college star, OJ Mayo.
Draft order if the lottery ends up based on record:
1. Heat - Beasely
2. Sonics - Rose
3. Clippers - Mayo
4. Grizzlies - Lopez
5. Knicks - Bayless/Gordon
6. Wolves - Jordan/Randolph/Gallinari/Speights(???)
Might be too high for Speights, but at the 6th slot, we're likely looking for the best big available, as whoever doesn't get picked by the Knicks (Gordon/Bayless), doesn't make the trade worth it. Gordon is a smaller version of McCants, and Bayless is a smaller version of Foye.
I don't see Gallinari as a pick that makes sense. He causes problems with Gomes, Brewer, and Snyder(not that he's a concern).
Assuming that Miami turns it around even a little bit and gets out of the top ten next year, we're looking at 3 first round picks next year. Miami, Boston, and our own. Our own is contingent on us staying in the top 10 picks, or us making a trade with the Clippers to get the pick back. Not counting draft picks, and any extensions to Gomes, Smith, Richard, and/or Telfair, we're sitting at around 43.1 mil, so plus draft picks and extensions, likely to Gomes and Smith, we're right at the luxury tax in the summer of 2009.
With that in mind, and Taylor's interest in saving money, oh and throw in that McHale will likely make a dumb signing by then, a trade in which we increase draft picks, and decrease salary is a good thing. We'll never really be in the market for a big free agent due to our salary situation, so those draft picks and younger players would be needed to bring in talent in a trade. Or hopefully a couple of them are hits and not misses.
Long story short, I make the trade.
That turns the original trade into:
Sam Cassell + 2008(#3) for Tim Thomas + 2008 (#6).
Sounds a lot better than the original deal.
