Copying an idea from the trade board....

I'm thinking of a three way trade involving Cleveland, MN, and one other team with a high 2008 lottery pick.

The basics:

MN sends Jaric to Cleveland and the #2 pick to the third team.
Cleveland sends an expiring contract to each MN and the third team, and the #19 pick to MN.
Third team sends their 2008 lottery pick to MN, their 2009 #1 to MN, and a player (see next paragraph) to Cleveland.

Off the top of my head it might be the Knicks (Crawford), Bucks (Redd), Memphis (Miller), Heat (Marion), or Clippers (Brand). The higher their pick, the better for MN in order to grab Mayo (MN wouldnt consider this if the pick was below maybe #4 or #5).

Cleveland finally lands help for Lebron at the expense of this year's pick and expiring contracts.

MN does the unthinkable but gets back a pick this year, a pick next year, and cap relief.

The third team dumps salary and gives up two picks to grab their new franchise cornerstone, Michael Beasley.

Thoughts?

No way. In that scenario the Wolves should take Beasely and not look back.

I wouldn't be opposed to moving the number 2 pick if Rose is unavailable, but Marko would have to be in the deal and I would want us get a quality center like Andris Biedrins or Emeka Okafor in return. But I'd rather have us just keep the pick and have an physically imposing lineup of...

SG. Corey Brewer
SF. Michael Beasley
PF. Al Jefferson

This lineup would absolutely dominate but we would still need of a center. Diop or one of the many cheap defensive centers mentioned on this board would fit the bill. Also with Foye playing the 1/2, Brewer the 2/3, Beasley the 3/4, and Big Al playing the 4/5, you could really have something special with the right bench. This lineup would cause all sorts of match up problems for opposing teams.

though I have not a real idea about what to do with our pick if rose is gone I wouldn't trade beasley away. he's got too much talent to pass up

I'm not necessarily saying we should do it, but I'll play devil's advocate and say that there are no guarantees in the draft, even when guys appear to be no-brainer picks like Beasley and Rose. Maybe in 2-3 years, Mayo or Bayless winds up being the best of the bunch.

In 2006, Roy was drafted 6th, after Bargnani was taken 1st.
In 2005, Paul was the 4th guy taken, after Bogut and Marv Williams.
In 2004, Iggy wasnt taken until 9th.
2003, Wade 5th after Darko was 2nd.
2002, Amare 9th and Caron 10th.

I mean, even just looking at the top-ten picks of recent drafts, if you could redraft knowing what you know now, none of them would go down the same today as they did at the time.

Just saying, we dont know who the cream of the crop will be. We all assume (myself included) it will be Rose and Beasley, but the truth is we just dont know.

No, there's no guarantee, but I have a hard time agree to a "framework" for trading the pick. It'd have to be on a trade-by-trade basis. And, as a huge fan of Mayo, I don't really see trading a top three pick. For #4, I'd need a solid starter, someone like Okafor or Bogut at 5 or someone like Iggy, Deng, Josh Smith at 3. Might require the Wolves to throw in a little more than #4, but I'd be fine with that - but I wouldn't be fine with trading #4 straight up for a lesser player.

How about if it ended up like...

1. Miami - Derrick Rose
2. Minnesota - Michael Beasley
3. Memphis - OJ Mayo

We then make a trade with Memphis...

Beasley and Jaric for Milicic, Mayo, and #28. It gives us a reasonably priced young big to match with Jefferson, a good perimeter scorer, and an extra pick to find a project big man, or maybe package with our 2nd rounders to move up even earlier into the mid-teens. Also moves Jaric's contract.

C - Milicic/RLopez
PF - Jefferson/Smith/Madsen
SF - Gomes/Brewer/Walker
SG - Mayo/McCants/Buckner
PG - Foye/Telfair

With 2 second rounders to use, or packaged with #28 to get RLopez or other big man, like Hibbert and company.

I like the balance.

The gap between Beasley and Mayo is muuuch bigger than a head case center and the 28th pick, imo.

We also drop Jaric's deal.

On the trade forum, I posted an adjusted version, that swings Jaric to Denver, and brings us the #20 pick instead of the #28.

Just cant see trading Beasley. I kinda think McHale is even looking at Love. Jefferson and Beasley couldnt work at the 4 and 5 ? at the cost of some rebounding those two would be fierce. Can Brewer rebound?

Brewer can definitely rebound.

If we moved McCants and were able to get a center like Hibbert, would that make the pairing of Jefferson and Beasley a great combo?

Basically I'm looking at a center who can be successful away from the basket, has a high post game, and can pass the ball. Almost a little inside out.

Well, if this happens I think the Wolves definitely take Beasley and see if it'll work....but if they were inclined to trade the pick I think the Bulls are the one team that would severly overpay for Beasley. They are desperate for a superstar and it's even better that it would be a low post PF. The fans on their board now believe Deng, Noc, Heinrich, Gordon and basically every other player on their roster is overrated.

I would at least consider something like:

Heinrich
Noah
#9 (Gallinari?)
(maybe even a future #1?)

for

Beasley
Jaric
Filler

I think Jaric (i.e. a big PG) would work well with Gordon in the Chicago backcourt and Beasley is exactly what they need for a low post scorer. I like how Noah and Big Al would work up front and I think a Heinrich, Foye, McCants backcourt might be nice. I've also read in a few spots that the Wolves seem to like Gallinari.

With all that said, I still think the Wolves would simply keep Beasley if they could grab him. As someone said, you win with superstars in this league.

Chicago would be a nice trading partner, if we could get Deng/Noah for Beasley, I'd have to consider that strongly.

after all these years, the wolves (hypothetically) get the #2 pick and you want to trade it? I understand the logic in considering a deal, BUT...have you not considered the karmic impact of doing that?

If the Wolves find themselves with a top two pick, the last thing we need are the gears in McHale's head to start turning. Take Beasley or Rose, and call it a draft.

Blount couldn't catch or pass. But his outside shooting would be nice with someone who does most of his work down low, like Jefferson. Blount didn't work with KG because they both frequented the same floor space.
