It makes much more sense to plot out the wolves future if you think where they can be two years from now, as opposed to next year. Why? Two important considerations:

(1) The Clippers potentially getting our pick next year; and,
(2) the potential to sign someone next summer after Walker/Buckner/T-Hud/Howard all come off the books.

If you've been around the the site for awhile then you know this projective thinking is nothing new. I think when plotting what the wolves should do this season, we need to look at the big picture. If you do it this way, you begin to start thinking- should we really sign Diop to the full midlevel?

Here's my plan for the next two years. Note: every plan should take into consideration where you think the team will be after next year going into '09.

This offseason- keep the draft pick. Don't sign anyone except for Gomes (if we don't get Beasley and only if it's less than 4 years/$15 mil) and a cheap temporary center-preferably O'Bryant (if he can show promise).

Next trading deadline we trade Jaric and the rights to Rudy Mbemba to a playoff team in desperate need of some depth for an expiring contract.

Next year we show a ten game improvement, but still finish with the 7th worst record in the league. We get to keep our pick one more year. All our deadweight comes off the books.

Before the beginning of the 09-10 season our roster looks something like this (disregarding positions):

Al, McCants, Brewer, Foye, Gomes, O'Bryant, 2008#1, 2008#2, 2009 #1, 2009 #1, 2009 #1.

We then our enough under the cap to offer someone a near max deal starting at $15/yr to fill the position we need most. It just so happens Bynum is an unrestricted free agent and the Lakers refuse to match.

Okay, okay so maybe that last part about signing Bynum is a pipe dream, but it's better to have that as a possibility a year from now instead of having Smith and Diop on the books for the next four years.

I agree somewhat. I just dont feel a team can succeed without a nice mix of veterans sprinkled in. If we have that particular roster going in to 09, im not sure the young guys have developed a winning attitude, or that they have learned enough just by being "thrown into the pool".

Other than that though, I like the plan. Also what did we get or what can we get from a Jaric/2nd round pick type deal?

This has been my plan all along but also agree with 4ho5ive, this team will need some veterans. If the Wolves were unable to attract Bynum they could instead spend money on two just over the MLE type veterans, preferably from winning teams.

I think you're underestimating the competition the Wolves will face in the summer of '09 for top tier free agents. A lot of teams are positioning themselves to have a lot of money to spend.

Almost all of them are more desireable markets than Minnesota.

I think the Wolves best chance to aquire someone is through a trade, even then, you usually have to give up a young peice along with expirings to get something done. Would McCants + expirings be enough? I'm not so sure.

Furthermore, the free agents available next year is going to dwindle as players sign extentions this Summer. I'm guessing the bulk of the FA class will be categorized into the WIN NOW kind of player.

The truth is, the Wolves just aren't ready for that kind of player to be added.

If there are alot teams with cap space, that probably means there are alot of free agents, I would think. . But even if we can't sign players we can use cap space as trade bait. Unlike expiring contracts, cap space can be divided up however we like in trades and we don't have to pay players we don't want. Plus if we wait much longer, our money will be tied up with Foye and whatever other players we want to keep.
Win now type of players should be fine if we've drafted well, we should be stacked with talented young players. Foye and Jefferson should be close enough to their primes that we should be competitive with some veteran talent and I think young players develop quicker on competive teams.

there's nobody in the '09 free agent class thats worth the extra effort. Mostly aging stars and underachievers. There's nobody I'd want to pay the max for, so the Wolves would end up overpaying to lure a Deng or whomever

I didnt want to let the cat out of the bag, but i cant help it. Invo1 has figured out the space-time continuum and has managed to build a time machine to the past. While there, the people of the past thinks he's a God and obey his wishes to make NBA to NCAA trades. He swings KG to Boston and Al to Flordia where he will finally be able to dominate the college ranks all in the matter of two days.

That has to be it.

It looks more like going back in time to the three way KG deal with ATL and PHX where the Wolves would have got ATL's #3 (Horford) and #11 picks and used the #7 on Noah.
