Mayo scoop

Post#1 » by younggunsmn » Wed May 21, 2008 4:41 am

Banks336, a verified UNC baller and poster on the KFAN Board with alot of pro/college contacts, has a thread there with a short phone interview with OJ Mayo, he is not against playing in Minnesota and would love playing with talented young guys his own age.
He's trying to set up a radio interview for tomorrow. Good News.

(sorry to link another board but this is real news)

Looks like he's saying all the typical, polite responses. I'm still be worried he'd eventually want out, ala Marbury.

But at this point you can only hope for the best I suppose. I'd rather try rolling with Mayo than anyone else, despite the risks of having a small market team.

Even if he wanted out, within the first four years he would have considerable trade value. Much more than Brook Lopez would.

Put it another way. If three years from now Mayo wants out, we could easily trade him for Brook Lopez.

I felt so out of place reading that board, like I didn't belong.

Mayo is the only player after Rose and Beasley with Star potential, that's why we take him.

You can't pass up a guard who will get the Wolves media attention and maybe some games on TNT and ESPN like Durant gave Seattle Air-Time this year.

Please Mchale, Mayo...

Thanks for all the info Banks.

The question of how he'd like playing in Minny is on all our minds here I think, thanks for getting the answer. Hopefully mcHale & co don't screw it up and all the crap we heard him and Freddy say tonight about BPA is just smokescreen.

Among other stuff...

He didn't actually answer the question clearly so I asked him about the small market stuff again and this is what he said;

Everyteam starts off as a small market team ya know? Hopefully I will be able to bring a pretty decent fanbase where ever I go. I'm going to get endorsements and all of that but I'm just looking to play basketball Will O..... It doesn't matter where I go, I just want to be around guys who I can grow up with and we can have a goal to win basketball games together.... Being the main guy isn't my goal, but being the main guy as far as helping my team win is the thing I'm shooting for...

Loving the bold part; I admire people who don't try to be the man, but know that it takes a group effort to be successful, and if he genuinely means what he said about growing up with the team and winning...then Mayo is my guy 100%, but sometimes things are more sugar coated than they seem, we'll just have to wait and find out.

Thanks Banks,

Could you copy the whole convo here? Because it is from another board and not copywrite we can do that. (And it is your words) I would rather not link to the kfan blog. I listen to kfan, but the message board is pretty bad.

Ok... As you'll know, I talked to O.J. Mayo earlier today, we didn't get to stay on the phone to long because he was kind of busy, but here are a couple of things he said...(I can't remember word for word 100% so I'm just writting what I remember)

I asked him since it's obvious that Rose & Beasley will go 1 and 2, he basically has a 90% chance to go # 3.... I said how would you feel about not being able to go to city's like Chicago & Miami but instead possibly ending up in Minny, here's what he said;

Of course you would want to have the opportunity to go to storied franchises the the Bulls & Heat and those possibilities aren't out of the picture for sure but coming into a situation in Minnesota who's in a rebuilding state of mind which means I'll be able to play with guys around my age, who have some good legs under them, & most of their stars are young lottery picks makes the situation so much better.....
I asked him how does he think he will adjust to playing in a cold city like Minny with the market not as high as other teams and this is what he said;

Well it's not like we're playing tennis,football, or soccer, we're talking about basketball, the game is played in doors and you only play 41 games in your state anyway so the weather and the outdoors can't really be a big factor. Hell look at your mans KG, it must be something in that cold air because he's been doing great his entire career!
He didn't actually answer the question clearly so I asked him about the small market stuff again and this is what he said;

Alright man, well I'ma try to get at you tomorrow so we can see if we can set up an interview I just got to get the timing down on thier radio station broadcast and stuff;

Aight, well we can talk about it tomorrow cause I got 2 call someone back anyway but try to get something set up that can fit my time and there's because doing a quick interview wouldn't be fair.
