Rumor: DeAndre Jordan gets promise in top 5.

Post#1 » by PeeDee » Thu May 22, 2008 2:10 pm

Chad Ford is reporting a rumor that DeAndre Jordan has already recieved a promise that he will be taken in the top 5.

Rumors of "promises" to draft prospects start flooding in this time of year. The theory is that a team will promise a prospect that they will draft them if they refuse to work out for other teams.

On Wednesday I heard several interesting "promise" rumors. The first said that Texas A&M center DeAndre Jordan has a promise in the Top 5 of the draft. The two sources who gave me the information were NBA front office sources in the lottery who said that Jordan's agent, Joel Bell, wouldn't schedule workouts with them.

Jordan getting a promise that high is a little bit of a surprise. He has the physical tools to be an excellent NBA big man in a Dwight Howard type of mold. But he struggled mightily the second half of the season and many scouts question his motor and work ethic.

If it's true it's one of three teams -- the Wolves, Sonics or Grizzlies. All three need centers so … I guess it's plausible.

All I can say is, if it were the Wolves that promised this (and planned to live up to it), we better be trading down to do so and picking up added value.

Kind of like the promise we had with Hawes last year?

Luckily, this doesn't fit with McHale's statements about having 8 players he likes... this couldn't possibly be the Wolves...

right?

C'mon, right??

If it's true he has a promise that high, which is kind of hard to believe, logic says it's not us. Promises are usually to stop a player from working out for others teams thus discouraging those teams from drafting him (or trading up to draft him) so he can fall to the team that gave the promise.

In our situation we know who the top two picks are going to be so there is zero chance for him to go before our pick therefore we have no motivation to make such a promise.

I don't believe it to begin with, but if its true, it has to be MEM. They need a center, and may be convinced we'll take Lopez. Bayless would be a terrible fit for them at #5, and they desperately need a center, and have minutes to devote to developing one.

I'm with shrink....who knows if its even true.

Here's another way to think about the Memphis angle - wouldnt they WANT Jordan talking to other teams, in hopes that someone else might grab him and then Lopez slips to them? Typically you give promises to keep a guy away from other teams, but in this case having Jordan drafted before their pick could only help the Griz.

Minnesota in all reality is picking first so they would not have to promise anything to anybody.

but Jordan already hired an agent.

If the Wolves pick Mayo, wouldn't Memphis go with Lopez?

I don't understand the circle jerk affection that some GM might have towards him. Honestly, he just isn't a good basketball player. I think I have seen more games than anyone here but he looks the part but man he leaves a ton to be desired when he is on the court.
