Chad Ford: Mayo clear #3

I know this conversation is going on in a lot of threads, but I thought I'd start another to make the mods work harder (ha!) Seriously, I think Ford's comment summarizes what we Mayo backers think in one paragraph:

---------------------------------

Mick (SF): Chad - Outside of Beasley and Rose, who has the potential to be "special"? Mayo? Bayless?

Chad Ford: (2:18 PM ET ) Mayo. No question. He's suffered from such extreme expectations. I watched him for two days, spent a lot of time talking to him and I'm blown away. As far as basketball goes ... he really has it all. I think he'll be good enough to play point on the right team, but even if he doesn't, he really can score. As a person, I was impressed. I've heard all the bad stuff, but what I saw was a very intelligent, respectful and humble kid who is working his butt off. I think he's misunderstood. I know he's had a few issues in high school -- but honestly how many kids do you know that haven't had any issues in high school? I think he's a clear top 3 pick ... he might even crack into the No. 2 conversation with Miami.

No way Miami takes Mayo.

I don't agree with Ford 100% of the time, but I can kinda see his point on Mayo over Beasley for Miami... a Mayo/Wade backcourt would be awesome, and Beasley wouldn't fit on a frontline that already has Haslem and Marion (assuming they resign him.)

You're right though, probably just gamesmanship by Riley.

i wouldnt be so sure of that there is 3 potentional superstars in this draft not 2 like everyone seems to think

Mayo has all the tools to be the best player in this draft

In the question above the one in the original post Ford actually explicitly stated that he'd heard rumors Miami might consider Mayo with the #2..

That's a pretty good point about Marion.

If NYK plans to resign Marion, and thinks that the upgrade of Beasly from Haslem isn't that great for their team in a win now situation I can see how there'd be some consideration for the clinic if they believe they can get some addition assets while still securing mayo. the problem is of course mn may take mayo so a trade down with sea and mem becomes impossible they can't then extract the draft value difference between mayo and beasly if mn plans to take mayo

center\marion\beasly\wade\banks
or
center\marion\haslem\wade\mayo plus something extracted for the trade up

This is exactly why I wasn't upset that we stayed at 3. I think Mayo has that superstar potential and can be grouped with Rose and Beasley. Those guys should be considered 1 and 2 but Mayo is just as talented. My only worry is Mchale..... no suprise.... being a douche.

Ugh, I want Rose more than Beasley, but there is no way Rose falls to 3 even if OJ gets picked top 2. One of the two teams will nab Rose.

Mayo was kind of considered #1 in the class for a long time, and if the top three had been on different teams, the order might come out different.

I know if the Bulls had gotten #3 I would be very excited about Mayo and his possibilities.

I don't think it really matters what rank you are a year before the draft. So much can change in a year. Last year Brian Brohm was a top five NFL draft pick. This year he's a second rounder.

As far as superstar potential, I should point out that his wingspan is only 6'6.

Other superstar SG/SF wingspans:
Kobe: 6'11
Jordan: 6'11
Vince Carter: 7'0
T-Mac: 7'2
LeBron: 7'0

I'm not saying you can't be a superstar with an average wingspan, I'm just saying that history shows guys with long arms have an advantage. Mayo's average wingspan is a negative.

Aha, TF21, i've been looking for measurements and such for potential draftee's, where did you find out his wingspan, or where can i find other measurements at?

His standing reach and wingspan is not far off of Brandon Roy.

I know the site doesn't look legit but I've seen the same measurements on at least a couple of other sites so it is accurate IMO.

rev, Mayo's standing reach is only 8'4.

Kobe: 8'10
Jordan: 8'10
Vince: 8'11
LeBron: 8'10

There has to be a very strong correlation between SGs/SFs who are most likely HOF'ers and wingspan/standing reach.

I'm curious whee you got those numbers because they seem a little high to me. Looking at the DX list Brewer has only an 8'7" standing reach and he's considered long for the SF position. Horford, who plays center, has only an 8'11" reach- the same as Jordan and Vince? Noah, at 8'10.5" is less than Jordan and Vince? I find this hard to believe.

I posted a link.

Brewer only has a 6'8.25 wingspan which is slightly above average for a normal human being, or average/below average for an NBA player. I wouldn't call him long for the SF position. He looks deceptively long because he's so skinny.
