Brook Lopez' Workout

The two-year college standout was the first of several prospects who will be put through an extensive workout by the Timberwolves' basketball operations and coaching staffs. On Tuesday, Lopez shot from inside. He shot from outside. He took contact. He dribbled. He ran. He took foul shots. He ... did everything.

"I thought it went really well," said a sweaty Lopez as he looked down at assembled media members after closing the workout with full-court drills. "I think I can come here and help the team win. I'll do whatever the coaches require of me and work my hardest."

"We were able to see him do some different things, put him in situations where he had to put the ball on the floor, change direction and stuff like that, that I wanted to see," said McHale. "He showed some range, he showed some stuff. You just want to see him in situations where you're saying "If you're going to play with Al Jefferson, these are situations you are going to find yourself in."

Of course, meshing with Minnesota's double-double machine will be key for whomever the Wolves choose to select. For his part, Lopez said he'd love to play with Mr. 20 and 10.

"Al commands so much attention that it would make my game that much easier," he said. "I'm so used to in college being double- and triple-teamed, but he'd open it up for me because he's such a great player."

Yet and still, the process is in its embryonic stages; McHale and Co. have a lot of work to do before putting someone's name in an envelope on June 26.

"You're looking at everybody," explained the Vice President of Basketball Operations. "You're trying to find guys that compliment, you're trying to find the best player available ... We are going to assess for that three spot like eight or nine guys pretty hard and then we are assessing a whole other level of guys in case we move out of that three spot."

Lopez, familiar with Minnesota's entire roster, did say that he'd like to be the next player to don the jersey of the team he rooted for growing up.

"They have a good young core," Lopez added. "And I'd like to come in and help. I hope I can bring energy, defense and all the little things."

Though it's tough to take too much away from a 1-on-0 workout, those assembled at Target Center's practice facility must have noticed that Lopez comes just as big (7-0, 260) as advertised, and should have been impressed with his range. Lopez showed an ability to knock down jumpers all the way out to the NBA three-point line, and was consistently good - and natural - within the college three. Though he's not explosive a la Amare Stoudemire, Lopez moves well and can finish with both hands near the rim.

We interviewed Lopez on camera after his workout, and followed up by sitting down with Wolves broadcaster Jim Petersen, who was charged with bodying Lopez up 1-on-1 in the paint. Stay tuned for those videos coming soon on timberwolves.com.

you beat me to it.

He looks pretty buff in the picture. He repped 185 only 7 times though.

Like the article said, you can't put too much into a 1-on-0 workout, but I like what he said about Jefferson opening up his game and making it easier for him, and when he added that he wants to provide the little things; defense, energy, etc.

LOL @ Jim Pete, always getting posted.

Wish we could have had him in going against someone, his brother even; nonetheless, it sounds like he did quite well. I am sure I will love hearing about Mayo when he comes in, and I am sure Love and whoever else will sound great too....

I think ideally if we could trade the #3 for 2 mid lottos and end up with essentially Mayo for Lopez + Gallinari I would be happiest.... I think. Way too many interesting scenarios out there.

I still think the Wolves should draft whoever's left out of Rose, Beasley and Mayo regardless.

The Wolves are in no position to draft for need yet. They should take the best player available.

I'm not saying that I would mind seeing Lopez in a Wolves uniform. He's a great player; just not a top 3 pick overall though.

They guys over at nbadraft.net thought that Lopez was good/bad enough to warrant the #9 pick, so if that plays out, the Wolves should entertain the Knicks' offer to trade their pick for expiring contracts and hope that Lopez is still there at #6.

Did I just read this correctly???

Lopez, familiar with Minnesota's entire roster, did say that he'd like to be the next player to don the jersey of the team he rooted for growing up.

Anyway, I still want Mayo, but Lopez is increasingly making it easier to live with trading down. #3=Mayo, any other pick and Lopez and maybe Gilarinaifiajo would be OK.

^^too much risk of that going wrong.

The quote I found interesting was..

Lopez, familiar with Minnesota's entire roster, did say that he'd like to be the next player to don the jersey of the team he rooted for growing up.

since when is he a wolves fan?

It is hard to gauge 1-0 workouts from a fan perspective. It does allow the "Trintarian terrorwolves Think Bank" to get a feel for the player as a person and some of their movements.

For a Fan it is still Mayo-Lopez/Love for the wolves.

We're gonna hear the same stuff about eight more times this month. I mean, its an exciting time of year and I enjoy it as much as the next guy, but every team says the same thing about every prospect, and every prospect says the same thing about every team...

Wolves reps: We just wanted to see what he could do in certain situations, run him through these drills, and get a good look at him. He was impressive, we liked what we saw, but in our position we have to look at all of our options.

Translation: We are going to evaluate all the top guys and say the same thing to the media after every workout.

Player: I would love to come to Minnesota and play with Al Jefferson. They have a great young nucleus here and I am willing to work hard and listen to the coaches, and I believe I can come in and help the team win next season.

Translation: The higher I get drafted, the more money I make.

Apparently his whole life:

The Timberwolves? Really? What about the report from yesterday that Lopez wasn't interested in working out for the Wolves? Hogwash, says Lopez.

"I don't know - I've been a Minnesota fan my whole life."

Someone on another wolves board overheard Rosen on KFAN say that Lopez was schooled by Jim Peterson.

thats like saying so and so chess prodigy was schooled by Garry Kasparov.

in other words, even the best up and comers are gonna get schooled by the master eventually.

I had to bust out that chess analogy so there was a common denominator we could all relate to

An audio interview with McHale is also up. One interesting snippet:

When asked if anyone said no to working out, McHale said, "Of course".

When asked if it was anyone besides Rose and Beasley that said no, McHale said, "Of course".
