realGM fan mock draft: you make the call

Post#1 » by smoothie » Thu Jun 19, 2008 5:59 pm

with a week left before the draft, i'm hoping to put together a fan mock draft of the first round by going from board to board and getting the fans to make the pick.

using knowledge of recent reports from the team you follow most closely, please form an educated guess as to whom your team will select and why. this is not about who you want your team to draft, but who you think they want to draft.

so far the draft has played out with no surprises:

1. chicago - rose
2. miami - beasely
3. minnesota - ??

mayo? lopez? love? someone else? you're on the clock!
sometimes the majority are just a collection of fools.

I say do the Millwaukee trade where we get Bogut and #8. That's by far the best outcome I've seen so far. If we have to pick a player then I'd say get Mayo and be done with it.

It's going to be Mayo. Trade him or keep him. Either way, it's going to be Mayo.

Mayo, of course.

I commend the effort, but I could very easily see both Beasley and Mayo being traded, with lottery picks coming back, and it is rumored many teams are looking to move up or down the draft. This could be one of the most active draft nights that I can remember, so it might shoot a hole in the idea. Still, fun to see.

Mayo should be the pick. I wouldn't be suprised to find a trade, but Mayo should be the pick.

Hey! Quick reply is back! Anyway, Mayo will be the pick, I'm confident. Whether we trade him or hold on to him is undetermined, but he will be the 3rd selection.

Devilz is known to cause trouble and be funny and sarcastic..... I am not sure of his sources though. He is also not a big Mayo supporter (I believe), but he may know something others don't in this regards. Others are more noted for their sources though.

I feel a little bad for RealGM posters from other areas, because they don't get the true story about MIN. The articles that RealGM chooses to use are often from our least reliable news source. For example, the day that the story came out that McHale liked Love, the next day a more respectable writer said he was infatuated with Gallinari.

The truth is, we don't know, and neither does anyone else. McHale plays his cards very close to the vest, and the Minnesota media isn't what I would call "penetrating." I feel comfortable though saying that the pick (to keep or trade) will be Mayo. Virtually any source you see that has printed a mock since Mayo's first workout has had him going in the Top 3 .. occasionally Top 2. I think there is a definite gap in the perceived value between Mayo and any #4 pick. Even if McHale didn't like Mayo (and we've only heard complimentary things, unlike Beasley), no matter who he likes better, he'd be foolish not to take Mayo and trade down.

Minnesota holds all the cards. All we gotta do is select whoever is left between rose, beasley and mayo and then just sit back and see if a deal knocks our socks off, otherwise we just take the player and run. I like our position right now.

personally, I think it would be funny if the grizzlies pull off the miller, lowry #5 for #2 and blount. Miami would do it only if they think mayo slips that far...then we go ahead and select mayo and laugh.

That would be funny, but, I would rather not have to deal with Beasley in the west. Let Miami have him.

thank you for your insight.

one more question:

do you think it worries your team to draft a player like mayo or gallinari since both are pretty much saying they dont want to play for a smaller market team?

No matter which player we want we have to draft Mayo. He could then be traded to get the player we wanted and more.

This is another one of those "national media" things.

When Mayo got his new agent, he wanted to workout for the big market teams first. However, he's gone out of his way to say that he is not locked into that, even after he worked out for New York. As you may or may not know, he's scheduled a workout with MIN for tomorrow.

Unfortunately, RealGM prints a story that is questionable at the time, and doesn't print the ones that correct the statements.

I can't speak to Gallinari -- I really haven't paid much attention, and 2008 as mainly a three-man draft.

Finally, I have no worries about Mayo playing here. He's going to put up great numbers with a double-threat of he and Foye in the back court, and get plenty of oppotunity to show his combo-guard skills for five years. We might trade him if a deal knocks our socks off, but Mayo would be treated like a star here. and playing next to Al could only help too.

I still have yet to read a direct quote from either of these guys stating this. Essentially every upcoming player (if not every player in the NBA) wants to play for a big market team. Beggars can't be choosers though. KG ended up loving Minnesota, as did a few others, so I'm not too worried about it.

After all, the league can't be comprised of a 60 man team with just the Knicks and the Lakers. Suck it up, and make your millions.

KG ended up loving MN after we blew everybody else out the water by many millions of dollars, an avenue that's now closed with the current collective bargaining agreement. The current agreement is tailor-made for big markets as the luxury tax is especially prohibitive for the Minneapolises of the NBA, but easier to handle if you're NY or LA.

At any rate, the fact that WE have to go to Mayo and Gallinari instead of them coming to us like normal proves (as if we don't have enough) what their priorities are. Of course it'd be unwise to come out and create the drama of saying "I do not want to play_____" and I'm sure their agents have specifically instructed them in what to say to the media if asked.

If Mayo comes to MN I'll assume he won't extend his contract until it actually happens. OJ Mayo is a business man first, NBA basketball player second. I will not be swayed!
