Kevin McHale questioned on the sports huddle

Just now Kevin McHale was on the Sports Huddle on WCCO.
He said that they are looking to have 13 players on the roster and 1 or 2 guys in the D-league.
I believe he said they are looking at/talking to a couple free agents this year, but probably won't try to bring in a free agent until next year when we get under the cap, possibly targeting a "older" free agent.
McHale said that Michael Doleac and Greg Buckner have been very professional, helping out the younger players. McHale said he is happy to have Buckner under contract for next year.
Sid Hartman said that he thinks the Wolves will take OJ Mayo.
Sid or Dave mentioned that Fred Hoiberg said that OJ is one of the best shooters he has seen.
Meh, I can't remember much more of it. I'll post a link to the podcast when I see it.

Under Contract
1. Jefferson
2. Foye
3. Brewer
4. McCants
5. Jaric
6. Walker
7. Buckner
8. Madsen
Picks
9. #3
10. #31
Resigned?
11. Gomes
12. Telfair
13. Smith
D-league
1. Richard
2. #34 (likely if non-Euro)
I think it would look like that barring any trades or FA pickups. Kirk Snyder would be the wild card to stay in place of Telfair or Smith.

Gomes and bassy are staying. We are gonna offer them contracts.
The problem with this line-up is it is w/o any trades. I could see some trades. Walker will not be here.

If indeed we are keeping Sebass and Gomes (great news BTW) then I too see some trades happening. One that I forsee is definitely the end of the McCants era in Minnesota. With Foye/Telfair/Brewer and likely *hopefully* Mayo as well as Jaric and perhaps even Buckner, i dont see any room for McCants out there. I dont see Brew spending heavy time at the 3. McCants may very well end up being packaged with a pick or Walker or both to bring in a big man.

Is it definite that Telfair is being offered a contract? Thats bad news for McCants.

Its not that far-fetched to think we would keep Bassy over McCants. A good portion of posters here are always screaming that they want a pass-first PG. Not to say that Bassy is that, but I think over time with the right attitude, he has the ability to become that. He is a good change-of-pace guard to have off the bench and if we draft Mayo it makes even more sense. He does everything we want McCants to do, passing, defense and attitude.

Bassy is a pass first point guard, nobody doubts that. The problem is he can't score and is limited on defense.

Keeping Bassy and McCants are not exclusive. Bassy is a pass-first pg that pushes tempo. Shad is a scoring guard. If anything it fortifies our depth. If we move Shad it will be for value. We are not trying to dump him by any means.
If anything it hurts Jaric. He played a good amount of minutes last year and that will likely decline if we bring in another guard (mayo)
Foye/Bassy covers the 1
Mayo/Shad cover the 2
Brewer/Gomes cover the 3
Gomes can also play some 4, Brew can play some 2. Foye/Mayo can go back and forth.
This gives us depth, as well as talent. Be happy.
We have not confirmed to offer them a contract. I was told that Gomes is priority#1 and Bassy is #2. The rest of the guys we would like to have, but are not really a priority (Snyder/Richard/Smith) I guess it just depends on how the roster fills out and what contracts they are offered.

It's still an imbalanced team that will have to make a move some time (not that that's a problem), and I still think McCants is the odd one out of that group even if Bassy doesn't sign.
Does "offer Bassy a contract" just mean tender the QO and see what happens? Not that his QO is chump change, but it makes him a UFA next year.

Let him be a UFA next year; we won't need him when we land RICKY RUBIO.

Even if the Wolves improve only marginally from how they played the second half of last season, they're looking at the bottom half of the lottery. Getting hopes up for (Rubio, Mullens, Jennings) is probably not where we ought to be right now.
Besides, I want me some Thabeet in 2009.
