Telfair not given offer but is still in picture

The Timberwolves have extended qualifying offers to restricted free agents Ryan Gomes, Craig Smith and Chris Richard but did not do so for Sebastian Telfair or Kirk Snyder.

By extending those offers, the Wolves reserve the right to match any offers Gomes, Smith or Richard receive when free-agent negotiations begin Tuesday. They did not offer Telfair a qualifier because they would have had to guarantee him a $3.5 million salary, but they remain hopeful they can re-sign him.

Randy Foye is the only point guard currently under contract now that the team traded away the draft rights to O.J. Mayo and Marko Jaric on Thursday night.

Vice president of basketball operations Kevin McHale said the team will look at other free-agent options if it cannot strike a deal with Telfair, a three-year pro.

Hmm, I wonder if Telfair wants to come back enough that he would be willing to negotiate. Craigers surprises me as well.

Smith surprises me a little too. Though, I don't know why, the FO is obsessed with undersized, unathletic Power Forwards who play poor defense.

You're jumping the gun. This is no guarantee Smith will be back, just that the Wolves have the right to match any offers.

Well, I doubt anyone will give him a ridiculous offer, i'm pretty confident he is still ours unless something happens.

Either way, i'll still be a fan of Craig Smith, he is the only NBA player i've ever met and he is a man beast.

If the Wolves are eyeing cap-space in 2010 they may decline to match any offer over 2 years. The qualifying offer just means they're willing to pay him a dirt cheap salary for one season. It doesn't mean they're willing to give him a fair contract, although they might be.

Agree, Craig probably has more value to some of the other teams than he does to us. This puts us in good position to do a sign-and-trade if the value is there.

I think the most interesting part of this is Telfair. I don't buy the theory that they're looking for a big free agent in 2010... they may still bring Telfair back, but maybe they're just looking to upgrade the backup point spot.

If they let Telfair walk, who would you guys like to see backing up Foye? I'm a fan of Chris Duhon's game, and there's no way he's back in Chicago after some issues with coaches last year and their guard glut after the draft. I also like Anthony Johnson as a veteran mentor type.

Chris Duhon would be a solid addition. We've talked about him before. However his problems started because he thought he didn't get enough minutes. Won't that be a problem with us as well? Sure he would be the #1 back-up G, but still wouldn't get that many minutes.

I dont see why he wouldnt. He can come off the bench in place of Foye with McCants or Brew or Miller-time. He can play alongside Foye when he is at the 2. If Telfair isnt back, Duhon could log a lot of minutes off the bench. If Telfair does come back, then he might have an issue.
