Could Gomes go to Cle?

Several teams have pursued Gomes and negotiations with a team such as Cleveland could intensify now that Boston free agent James Posey has signed with New Orleans

Anybody up for a s/t for Eric Snow + pick?

Good defender, Vet experience, commited, has serious heart. Has a broke jumper, but I think he would be a great locker room guy and would help Foye. He could handle the back up minutes and maybe the year after that retire and be our coach?

not bad, but consider Cle's pick is not gonna be lottery bound, i'd rather do Gomes for Eric Snow+ Dwayne Jones, bring Jones back would be cool, and this move fills both our voids in backup C and Pg

Weren't there talks of Snow retiring? I know he had problems with his knee, so I don't know if I could trust him as a backup. He'd be a great addition as a locker room presence/mentor, but I would need another NBA quality PG and not a d-league scrub as the 3rd PG if Snow were to be traded for.

Gomes is the type of bench player CLE needs and I think he could fight for minutes in the Cav's rotation. As much as I hate to see him leave the Wolves, I'd really like to see him go to a team for a chance at winning a title, and CLE fits that description. Lebron would appreciate having a smart player like Gomes on his team.

man...if Cleveland hadn't had such a hole burning in their pocket with their FA money the summer they signed Larry Hughes, Donyell Marshall and Damon Jones they could be in such better shape right now...what a disastrous lot of signings.

Yeah it's kind of like how we tried to surround KG by overpaying for mediocrity or worse. I think Gomes is actually a good value for $5 million compared to what a lot of the players out there get, but I agree that it's too much for this team with the areas we need to fill and the glut at certain positions.

You're right. Unfortunately for CLE though, if they offer $5 mil for Gomes, they pay $10 mil because they are over the lux.

This is why S&T's work better for teams that are over the lux, like BOS and CLE.

But for the Wolves? Taking back Snow or Scal, even while getting a first, is that worth it?

Hey Cle fan here- I don't think we give up a 1st for him. (And not a 2012 unprotected.. if lebron did leave we'd be really f'ed and have high picks for a couple years)

if the price is snow and dwayne jones i'd be all for it though. But as it was mentioned, we have to double anything we pay so i doubt we would pay 10 mil for gomes. when he doesn't fit our biggest need- sg. Just my 2 cents.

I questioned it at first, but with the $3 mil in cash, it makes a reasonable price for the first round pick.

ha. You won't get Delonte West for Gomes. West will be our starting PG. Gomes will be getting minutes behind Lebron and the log jam at PF (Wallace, AV, Hickson, Smith)..

Yeah, but you could conceivably buy one for the same money. Plus, you'd have the added bonus of not having to kill a roster spot for 2 years.

McHale really likes Ryan Gomes and we do too. He was a significant piece of the KG trade and someone they place significant value on. Some of us have a bit of reservation over the cost but if the team can't get a comparable player (like West) or a #1 pick in return they'll simply match any offer for him and bring him back.

Agree. I can understand the cost possibly being more than we want to spend, but I think Gomes even at MLE money is a great asset. Maybe not a necessity where we need it, but at this point I can get behind acquiring and keeping young talent with our surplus of 1st rounders now. Worst case is we can deal from a point of strength. Plus I'm a huge Gomes fan.

Nah, that kind of contract makes him unmovable unless he greatly improves. So, no, we couldn't just move him. Worst case is that we'd be stuck with him and couldn't have the freedom to sign a good FA in 2010.

Yes, but there are two differences.

First, you can buy a LATE 1st round pick for $3 mil. A trade with CLE or certainly a 2011 BOS 1st could be better than that, and worth more than $3 mil.

People over-estimate how good CLE is, because they have LeBron. Even though they played more, weaker Eastern Conference teams, their record would have gotten them the 10th spot in the West. They had the 19th pick this year.

Oh, and you're right about the roster spot being a cost, but you've got half the cash on hand to buy out that contract and get the roster spot back.
