Ryan Gomes Watch

Post#1 » by Klomp » Thu Jul 24, 2008 8:01 pm

Also, the Wolves appear to be getting closer to signing Ryan Gomes. If they do, it’ll probably be somewhere in the $3 million a year range. As the days go by, it looks less and less likely he’s going to get a sizable offer from another team. If he does and the Wolves don’t match, look for them to sign a lower level free agent who can defend bigger small forwards such as LeBron James.

Who would that mean? Devean George? Yakhouba Diawara? Bobby Jones? Ira Newble? Ryan Bowen? Or do we bring back Kirk Snyder?

I think we bring back Gomes, and at a reasonable $3 mil. He would become a decently priced trade asset at that price, and if the deal starts at $3 mil, I wouldn't feel so worried about a third year on his deal. I think if we needed to move him before 2010, it wouldn't be difficult.

I suppose there's also still the chance that he doesn't like the $3 mil offer, and with no other offers out there, he signs for $1 mil, plays a year, and becomes an unresticted free agent. I think its in both Gomes and the wolves interest if he takes the $3, and we don't lose his rights next summer.

If Gomes goes elsewhere, I think the two most likely replacements are Devean George and Kirk Snyder. I believe George was in town last week, perhaps meeting with the Wolves, and we gave Kirk Snyder a pretty healthy audition at the end of last season, and I think he did OK.

I have a hunch it would be George. Adds to the local flavor.

I really like Diawara but i dont see him getting much burn here. I agree it would likely be George. Instantly becomes me least favorite Wolf.

Heck if Gomes would sign for $3 million I'd give him 4 years. That's not much money and I don't think that size of contract would ever be tough to more. That said if he leaves I'd like to bring back Snyder as well.

If no Gomes then I'll go with captain Kirk. Dude plays HARD!

I still think if Gomes can't be had for $3 mil, it's George's money.

No lower level FA can slow LeBron James.

That's way too much for George, IMO. He hasn't done anything lately.

Not all of it. The rest goes in Glen Taylor's pocket, I imagine, to be reinvested in greeting cards.

Well that's a little better. Still not an exciting option though.

Good point. If Gomes gets an offer we don't match, why not just save the money. There are enough bodies to cover the SF position (Miller, Brewer, Cardinal?) and we won't find anyone to slow LeBron anyway. That $3 million would come in handy when we go after a FA. Bringing in another bench player doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Cardinal will see the court about as frequently as Madsen, methinks.

True.

Even without Cardinal, though, we would have:
SF: Miller (33), Brewer (15)
SG: Brewer (15), McCants (33)

I would like to have Gomes back because I like his play and his attitude. But, if he gets a better offer, I would rather save the money for an impact player later and give Brewer and McCants a chance to see what they can do now. It's not lke Devean George is the difference between lottery and playoffs.

We also have Carney. There's no room for George on the roster.

We can make room for Gomes. I don't see why we'd go out of our way for George.
