UTA-MIN
I'm just curious what MIN fans think of this:
McCants for Jarron Collins plus eliminating the protections on the UTA pick
McCants could start for Utah, and while Sloan would have to improve McCants defense, he'd certainly appreciate his work ethic. Some Jazz posters are asking for Collins to be bought out. We already own the UTA pick, but the protections are so complicated, its possible we're talking a pick in the 20's, or even a future second rounder. We'd be hoping UTA falls apart .. unlikely, but not impossible in the West. We'd save about $600 K this year. We'd still get Collins expiring, and some national press for pairing the twins in the Twin Cities.
Too little value? Too much?
Personally, I still stand by giving McCants tons of minutes for a month, and see if he can average 20 PPG and raise his trade value.

We could also include Calvin Booth after he becomes eligible near the end of August, to add a little more financial boost to us this year, and give the Jazz a replacement back-up center.

Re: UTA-MIN
Seems to me that McCants and Foye are both being undersold significantly today. I think we should be able to get more than a salary dump or unproductive backup C for either of them. If not, I'd rather keep them both.
The twins angle is interesting. Can we get Brook and Robin, though?

Re: UTA-MIN
Since McCants is expiring anyway it's not much of salary dump and it's legitimately possible Utah is good enough that the change in protections doesn't matter. I'm not sure why we're doing this.

I think its a little on the high end. What about someone like Carney though?
Also, I don't think McCants would start for them. They are pretty high on Ronnie Brewer I think, and they also have Korver.

I agree. Keep McCants if this is the best we can do.

You mean this Kyle Korver? http://blog.lib.umn.edu/snackeru/greet/ ... ccants.jpg

Re: UTA-MIN
Hmmm...that's interesting. I would think it depends on (1) exactly how bad the relationship is between McCants and Witt and Co., is he a disruption to the other young players or not and (2) how bad do we think Utah is going to be.
I'm of the belief that Utah is going to be pretty good for awhile, so we will probably get the pick this year regardless. Therefore we get no value in this trade. However, if we don't get the pick this year, it is possible Boozer leaves in the offseason and they collapse next year...but too me a full collapse is a long shot.
I just don't think we get enough value in this deal unless McCants absolutely has to be dealt and we have no other offers.

Re: UTA-MIN
If you think that Utah will fall significantly below the 8th best record in the league, this trade makes a little sense. Otherwise, you're not really gaining enough salary to do anything with the increased cap space. Even if you did use the money opened up by McCants, you could probably sign another player who plays about as well as...McCants. Utah is in a pickle. They probably need to move AK-47 in order to keep Boozer around but that's going to be tough to do with that big of a contract on the books. The only valuable cap space the Wolves can open up next year is if they move Cardinal, Miller, or Jefferson. The latter 2 probably aren't going anywhere (although I think you could get a bunch for Milller this year at the deadline) so that leaves Cardinal. His is the only bad deal left on the team.

The ninth best record in the Western Conference would make this a late lottery pick, which is what we used to get McCants in the first place. POR is probably going to supplant one of those teams and GSW was on the doorstep last year too. Denver's probably dropping out, but who else? Anyway, we already own that UTA pick, so I question whether the chance that Utah falls from the play-offs is worth the downgrade.

Re: UTA-MIN
Agreed. Even the best outcome of this trade would net the team a draft pick between 16-21, which isn't a big enough upgrade over McCants' original draft position or Utah's lowest non-protected position (22) to make it worthwhile. This may be Utah's last big push if Boozer doesn't resign. I don't think they'll fall below the 8th best record in the league, let alone the 9th best in the West.shrink wrote:stop-n-pop wrote:If you think that Utah will fall significantly below the 8th best record in the league, this trade makes a little sense.

9th best in the West is no worse than the 14th pick.

Re: UTA-MIN
McCants is worth far more than this IMO...I like the idea of sending him to GS for Wright, but if that doesn't work, I think he can be a scoring threat off the bench to potentially be moved at the deadline...
By the way, with the news of Deng signing, the Bulls obviously have no plans for Gordon...I think he would be a great fit with Foye and Miller in the starting lineup to open the floor up for Love and Big Al...would the Bulls consider Brewer and McCants plus Collins? what would we be willing to pay Gordon?

I think the Bulls would consider it since it's getting something of value for Gordon, rather than just letting him go. I think in some way they need to save face as they didn't trade him when he was a hot commodity. Gordon turned down $50m/5yr and Brewer, McCants, and Collins would be about $11.5 million so financially it would probably be what Gordon would want and not stretch the Bulls too far with Collins expiring.
I like Gordon and would trade McCants and Brewer for him. The issue would be how much do you pay him? A contract at $11 million per is higher than I'd go.

Re: UTA-MIN
Gordon > McCants, but to me, the difference between the two is not worth the difference in what his price will be.
Gordon: ($6.40 qo x1.5?) 32 MPG, FG 43%, 3P 41%, 3 RPG, 3APG, 19 PPG
McCants ($2.62): 27 MPG, FG 45%, 3P 41%, 3 RPG, 2 APG, 15 PPG
I would not want to give up Brewer and a big expiring plus McCants to get him.

Re: UTA-MIN
I wouldn't trade Brewer for Gordon. Brewer can develop into the type of do-everything player this team needs. I'm a huge Gordon fan, but if Miller is here long term (and I think he is), it's better to pair him with a wing like Brewer than another scorer like Gordon. And I don't think Gordon will ever develop into a point.

thats a hilarious picture, how can you trade mccants after seeing that?
he says `rawr` and Korver wants to find a corner and weep

yes he is, McCants` skills are inherent, his flaws are correctable however and are mostly related to inconsistent - a typical flaw in youth.
to me its Wittmans job to bring out the potential that is there. Trading him means coaching inferiority to me, not so much McCants. I know hes probably stubborn, but figure it out FFS, dont just give up the best all around scorer on the team for the hell of it
