Mike Miller and Jason Collins to the Lakers for Lamar Odom

This was by far my favorite this morning, as it provides exactly what both the Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves need. On the Lakers side it gives them a true small forward in Mike Miller who shoots lights-out and will even defend a little, as compared to Vladimir Radmanovic. Jason Collins is a solid defender, though he won't score at all, and would give LA the back-up they need for Andrew Bynum. On the Timberwolves side it's all about cap space. It would be unfortunate for Odom to have to spend a season losing night in and night out after being in the Finals last year, but you know what they say . . .basketball is a business.

Thoughts? We'd save about 1 million dollars this year and almost 10 million next year (assuming we wouldn't resign Odom)

Not sure where Odom fits on this team after acquiring Love. I rather keep Miller since he is a better fit and would actually want to be here.

But as a Laker fan I would do it in a second.

I really don't like the idea of this trade. We'll eventually have cap room, why not let see what the kids can do before trying to land the next big thing when one of the guys we have now could be something special. I am not a fan of Odom by all means, and I hate the fact that the guy can never stay healthy. MM wants to be here, you can't say that for many players in the league....but the biggest reason is the guy can shoot the lights out. And you need that when you have a dominant post player...perhaps even two. What you don't need is a big that floats around looking for jumpers...KG didn't work for us....Odom is the poorest version of KG you can get...I don't think it would work out.

Nice find, but hoopsworld turns out to be spelled with a "P" yet again. National sites seem to see teams like ours as farm clubs for the Lakers.

So for MIN, this deal is all about cap space? Is Mike Miller really a bad contract on his two year deal in the $9's? I sure don't think so.

Odom's past problems with the demon weed isn't going to endear him to Glen Taylor. And he plays our most crowded position .. PF. (Al, Love, Craig Smith, Gomes). Maybe if he could play some back-up PG, like they mentioned when he first came into the league ..?

If the Lakers want to offer us cap space, make it:

Mike Miller and Brian Cardinal for Odom

If they want Collins as Bynum's back-up, make it

Mike Miller + Brian Cardinal + Collins for Odom + Mihm + Coby Karl

That saves $4.5 mil this year, and all their guys are expirings.

Finally, there's got to be a better place for Odom than us. Could we spin him to the Clippers for Kaman-Mobely? Could NJN use him for Brook Lopez and Bobby Simmons?

Why couldn't Odom play sf?

3's are worth more than 2's.

...that is all

I absolutely hate this deal. to me it seems like Lamar is dumb as a brick occasionally plus other than being a better rebounder than Miller he's not really better than Miller. oh and did I forget that I believe Odom would be quite pissed coming here? team chemistry would suffer. the capspace we'd gain one year earlier wouldn't be worth it especially with Cardinal's contract still on the books.

I can see why LA would be all over it. A great move for them.

Horrible for the Wolves. Miller is a much better fit in MN than Odom, is paid within reason, and wants to be here. No reason for MN to do this when they are shooting for 2010 cap space, not after the upcoming 2009 season.

The expanded trade brings in a true center in Mihm who I think could be of use, but this is the wrong trade in order to bring him here. As mentioned, a three way sending Odom elsewhere is about the only option I would back here, and that would still have to be a pretty nice return for MN.

I'm with the majority on this one. Odom = no fit. A top-tier long-range sniper paired with Big Al and the Love Machine down low = perfect fit.

Just an FYI .. I probably wouldn't do either of the trades I proposed. I think Miller is going to be a good contributor here. If we needed to trade him, we'd get more at the deadline anyway. I just posted the trades because I thought they were more fair. At best, I'd do #2 if we were going to get something useful back for Odom, like expirings and a prospect, or the answer to our center question. Straight up where we end with Odom. Nope.

He's a very good player... I like him a lot, but he's not a good fit...

Not feelin Lamar on this team at all. Don't get rid of guys who wanna be here, especially talented players like Miller.

I posted on the Trade Board, trying to find a win-now team that would swap us something we could use for Odom, to see if a deal would justify trading Mike Miller, even if we got to move Cardinal. Not a lot of ideas.

IND was mentioned in a deal starting with Rasho, but I'm not sure the Pacers are interested in giving up young assets to compensate for the production difference between Odom and Nesterovic

PHO was mentioned in a deal starting with Barbosa. I like the other Lopez brother, and PHO certainly is win now with money concerns, and on top of all of this, I think Odom would do well in their style. However, I can't see how they could come up with the pieces to make a deal work. Maybe if they could get pieces from a third team by breaking down some other contract.

I think CLE is the pro-typical team here, that is the most win-now, and is over the lux. I brought over the Odom-for-Snow + Varejao + Hickson (he won't be ready in CLE's timeframe), but got no responses.

I'm curious if there are any other win-now teams that would want Odom but might be able to spin us stuff we'd prefer over Odom?

+1

The justification for all these Miller trades seems to be that MN gets cap relief back to throw at a FA. The way I see it, this franchise has a snowball's chance in hell of attracting a LeBron-type FA so we are realistically looking at a second-tier player, probably of about equal talent to Miller. So what sense does it make to give up Miller, who is a perfect fit and wants to be here, for a chance at maybe getting someone of equal value later?

I saw one poster offering Barbosa. I'd say the value is there but I want Barbosa on the wolves team as much as I want Odom here. in other words: I don't want him. Robin Lopez is a player I could see here though but then again, Phoenix doesn't have the pieces IMO.

I wouldn't mind seeing Shaq here though :D

I wouldn't do it, but send Odom to SAC to get us Brad Miller?

It'd save us about $4 mil this year and $4.4 mil next year, and give us a legit 7' center until we can get a replacement in two years. Brad Miller's defense is not what it once was, but he's a great passer, and his offense outside could clear room for Al. SAC might do it simply to get Hawes in the line-up sooner, and cut a $12 mil deal off of their payroll next year.

I'd do it only that you can mix him up with Mike or Andre Miller :D

no honestly, I guess I'd do it.

edit: any chance for someone to take on Cardinal instead of Collins?

I'm basing any Odom trade (2-team or 3-team) on swapping Cardinal for Collins at a minimum.

Mike Miller + Collins for Odom is just ridiculous.

yeah I'd also say giving up Collins instead of Cardinal is ridiculous but the OP said something of Miller+Cardinal so I figured it would apply the same here.
