David Harrison signing

Post#1 » by GeorgiaWolf » Thu Oct 9, 2008 1:26 am

http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2 ... berwolves/

The Minnesota Timberwolves are coming to Denver, and center David Harrison will be with them.

A source said Wednesday that Harrison, a former University of Colorado star, will sign a one-year contract with the Timberwolves. But Harrison, a free agent who played the past four seasons with Indiana, won’t play in Friday’s preseason game against the Nuggets at the Pepsi Center.

The source said Harrison will meet the Timberwolves in Denver. Harrison worked out two weeks ago with the team.

Harrison has career averages of 5.0 points and 2.9 rebounds. He averaged 4.2 points and 2.1 rebounds last season before the Pacers elected not to re-sign him.

Harrison’s NBA career has been marked by some off-the-court difficulties, including a five-game suspension last season for violating the NBA’s anti-drug policy. When strong NBA offers did not come Harrison’s way during the summer, he pondered playing this season overseas.

I'm surprised to see McHale/Taylor giving him a shot looking at his off-court antics... is his contract guaranteed?

Im surprised that we have actually been pretty active this offseason. Seems like we are really moving in a positive direction.

no risk/moderate reward at a position of need, I like it.

I like it because he is a physical big that isn't afraid to get his hands dirty on the court.

Hopefully he can be the Brandon Bass of this season, doubt it though.

Overview: A burly center with enough physical tools to be a decent backup on the NBA level. Has great size and bulk for an NBA center. Stills moves pretty well, but isn’t terribly explosive. Possesses the tools necessary to be a solid pro, but doesn’t always put them together. Shows some serviceably moves offensively, and knows how to use his weight. Blocks some shots due to his length. Was a highly touted recruit out of high school, and made an impact during his time at Colorado. Has had some issues off the court which may dictate his future, mainly with life-style choices. Effort has been questioned. Needs to show a commitment to improving his game and losing some weight if he wants to reach his peak as a player. Could find a better opportunity in free agency.

Offense: Gets the vast majority of his touches one-on-one in the post. Will find other opportunities by being active off the ball. Won’t take many jumpers. Shows a decent hook shot. Can finish with both hands. Raw post skills. Likes to turn right when he’s on the left block. Goes to the line at a good rate. Shoots an awful percentage. Good offensive rebounder. Gets quite a few putbacks. Shows a willingness to set good screens and move without the ball. Can’t put the ball on the floor. Rather turnover prone.

Defense: Does a good job defending the post due to his size. Will have a tough time defending quicker centers, but can match up against most players he is asked to guard. Does a good job rebounding his area, but has a hard time adjusting to offensive players crashing the glass. One of most foul prone players in the League. Doesn’t show good discipline. Needs to learn to go straight up. Could stand to lose some weight to improve his lateral quickness.

I like it, he's a big angry man. Does this mean they're cutting Booth, and whats the deal w/ Ollie

Common known fact that Mchale smoked a lil bit of the green back as a player. I am sure a mary jane offense does not strike McHale as evil.

there were trade talks last year. Usually involving Gerald Green. So I knew we had interest in him.

thank you very much. so what does this exactly mean? if he won't make the regular season roster does it still count against the cap? I don't really know how the non-guarantee works together with the one year length

It means he isn't guaranteed money if we decide not to keep him around.

I'd like to keep him around but to me, its either him or Richard. I dont see us keeping Booth anyway it goes, and I dont see Ahearn making the cut either. I think we keep Ollie and one of Richard/Hoffa/Harrison.

Good signing though. Makes up for not giving POB a shot.

I'm a bit surprised Taylor will gamble on him. I like it, but I thought we were hypersensitive to character issues, thanks to Isiah Rider, Marbury, ad infinitum.

I like it -- take the gamble, since he has the size. Let's see if he's willing to work. No risk if its not guaranteed. Don't be surprised if this ends up being just a pre-season invite, and he doesn't make the final, regular season roster.

immediately one of my faves. Only guy on the team w/ size and athleticism of a true NBA center, brings a tear to my eye

I like the gamble. If he gets his head on semi-straight, we've got a Brendan Haywood type on our hands. If he doesn't work out, it's no skin off our backs. It makes up for not getting to roll the dice on Livingston.

It's scary, the Wolves are actually starting to resemble a well run organization, using their wide open roster to take looks at guys like Carney and Harrison. I know it's the same people in the front office, but now that the pressure to win with KG is off their backs, they're running the organization in a completely different manner while trying to build around Big Al. There's still a long way to go before we're a factor in anything meaningful, but the post KG trade moves have been fairly encouraging.
"A while back,'' Cardinal said, "I took a picture of the standings and texted it to Love, just to bust his chops,'' Cardinal said. "He sent me a picture back of a snowdrift.''
