Blake Ahearn, We Barely Knew Ye!

Anyone read Reina's article on who was having pre-season success? I refuse to put his "Reina Value" or "Floor Impact Value" on the same validity level as other statistics, but it does demonstrate that Ahearn was very effective in the pre-season when he was on the floor, at least as a scorer:

Ahearn: 11.6 mpg, 52.2% FG, 80% FT, 50% 3P, 0.4 RPG, 1.2 APG, 7.8 PPG

http://basketball.realgm.com/src_fromth ... preseason/

Below is a list of every NBA player who has seen at least 50 minutes of preseason floor time. I created the FIC last season in order to measure overall efficiency, and it is used to rank players throughout the season to determine their Reina Value. The Reina Value is a percentage that helps valuate the performance of players in relation to their contracts.

2008-09 NBA Preseason FIC Leaders
1 Chris Paul 25.2
2 Tim Duncan 24.3
3 LeBron James 22.3
4 Deron Williams 21.9
5 Dwight Howard 21.8
6 Dwyane Wade 21.7
7 Rashard Lewis 21.1
8 Andris Biedrins 20.5
9 Kenyon Martin 19.8
10 Al Harrington 19.6
11 Gerald Green 19.4
12 Kevin Garnett 19.2
13 Brandon Roy 18.6
14 Al Jefferson 18.5
15 Tony Parker 18.5
16 Carmelo Anthony 18.4
17 David Lee 18.3
18 Jordan Farmar 18.1
19 Chris Bosh 18.1
20 Pau Gasol 18.1
21 Nene Hilario 17.9
22 Wilson Chandler 17.9
23 Vince Carter 17.9
24 Jose Calderon 17.7
25 Brandon Bass 17.6
26 DeMarcus Nelson 17.4
27 Kevin Martin 17.2
28 LaMarcus Aldridge 17
29 Andrei Kirilenko 17
30 Dirk Nowitzki 16.9
31 Aaron Gray 16.8
32 Tyrus Thomas 16.7
33 J.J. Redick 16.7
34 Andrew Bynum 16.6
35 Kelenna Azubuike 16.5
36 Eddie House 16.4
37 Brad Miler 16.3
38 Paul Pierce 16.2
39 Carl Landry 16.2
40 Delonte West 16.2
41 Mike Miller 16.1
42 David West 16
43 Blake Ahearn 15.9

Now I would have prefered keeping Ahearn, but I don't begrudge anyone who thinks keeping the veteran Kevin Ollie is a better play on a young team, so he can help direct traffic. My thinking is that wins don't matter so much this season, so why not give Ahearn a shot? Is McCants job as "off-the-bench scorer" searching for so many minutes that we didn't need Ahearn?

Wins don't matter, but showing progress and having the young players grow is important. If Ollie is able to tap into the mindset of Foye and make him a much better point guard and mentor him, he's far greater in value than Ahearn would be. Obviously that isn't a given, but neither is Ahearn being anything more than a bit player sitting and watching.

I liked him, but he simply doesn't bring anything to the table that we already don't have an abundance of. My hope is, like Tmo519 said, that Ollie can really help Foye learn how to direct the offense and man up on d (and Telfair for that matter). What is the old saying, give a man a fish and he eats for a day, but teach him to fish and he eats for a lifetime. Well....ahearn is the fish. hmmmmmm think about that.

Gerald Green!!

I will still be surprised if he makes it to midseason with the Mavs.

I would add that I've heard rumors that at least two teams were hoping the Wolves would waive Ollie, so they could pick him up. He probably has the more value arpund the league than the three we released. In related, 15th man news, another team is considering Aruajo, and Orlando is thinking about Troy Hudson.
