Pretty much everything this franchise has ever done outside of drafting KG and the moves since trading KG has been a mistake.

This is nothing new. Everytime we do a draft day trade there is a 90% chance that we are going to screw ourselves. Why do think our phone is ringing so much on draft night? Everbody loves to deal with McHale. On top of that it's the Blazers. They own every deal they have made in the last four years. Seriously, if I was a GM and got a call from the Blazers on draft day I wouldn't even answer.

If his name was Randy Roy we wouldn't have traded him. But with a name similar to a previous MN guard like Terrell Brandon, Brandon Roy was as good as gone. Names like Stephon Roy, Latrell Roy, Marko Roy or Pooh Roy, any of those would have been goners as well.

It's the same at the center position. If we had landed the #1 pick in 2007 we'd have drafted Greg Oden. But if his name was Luc Oden, Felton Oden, Rasho Oden, Eddie Oden or Kandi Oden we'd never keep the guy, no matter how good he is. That's how it works.

Actually what would really happen is...

We would keep Roy. He would show some signs of greatness but never would really catch on. Over time the coaching staff would keep trying to force him to be something he isn't, they would slap handcuffs on him and screw up his confidence. He would be so utterly mismanaged that he would begin to regress.

IF Roy somehow still managed to show his greatness through this, then the coaching staff would start setting him up for failure. They would play him at SF every night and try to force him to rebound. They would try to turn him into a defensive stopper and make him pass to lesser players. He would never realize his potential.

Meanwhile Foye turns into some Clutchmaster flash and everybody in the NBA is talking about 4th quarter Foye and how he has such balls for a young player, etc etc. Foye will get the FT line about 8 times a game and just be this flourishing beast.

No matter what happens, we will find a way to eff it up.

I'm giving Foye a full season. Season One, if we had not made the trade, we'd be whining we should have taken Foye, who would have blown up with all the extra minutes. As people have said before, Foye and Roy had near identical per-minute numbers, but MIN brought Foye along slowly, and POR threw Roy out there. I think that had an effect on the growth rate in Season Two, as well as Foye being injured for the first half of the season. So far, in Season 3, Foye has not looked good. It is quite possible, and even likely, that Brandon Roy will be the better player forever. However, I continue to believe that Foye has the bigger upside -- even higher than Roy. He may not get there .. perhaps even "probably not." However, that is not something that could have been determined in five games this season, and certainly not be known on draft night. I want to see mroe than five games before I make that determination.

TOTALLY AGREE. People say we should have kept Roy, Allen, Mayo, whoever. To me, it doesn't matter one bit. We would have found some way, any way, to piss it away. Even when it isn't even totally our fault (Marbury actin a fool) Foye, you know all the talent in the world is in there. If we had never made this deal, I'm almost convinced Foye would have been the beast and Roy would have struggled here, just cause we always screw things up. One thing on each of those trades? The Wolves were credited with making solid swaps each time. When we dealt for Marbury, it gave us our PG for the future to team with KG, good deal. When we dealt for Foye, A LOT of people regarded him as the best talent in the draft. Now with the Love-Mayo deal, MANY people think it was a good deal with Miller included. But we can't even think that way, we just assume because it's a Timberwolves deal, it will fail, because it feels like all of our stuff fails. Ugh....the life of being a Wolves fan.....

I too wish we had kept Roy. I always wanted us to draft rudy gay in the first place but that didn't happen so...I really think foye is better than he's playing right now. Something just is not right. He doesn't look natural out there. I know it's wittman. He's forcing foye and a lot of the rest of the team into certain roles and its basically screwing us over. We're playing with al as the definite #1 option but everyone else is holding back/being held back. This is just stupid. Instead of forcing players to play a certain way to play the brand of basketball wittman wants he needs to realize all of our players strengths and mesh those into a gameplan that fits our team. You are holding us back Wittman!!!!

I dunno, it's hard to say, I believe in the big picture.

Portland fans could lament not getting Deron Williams in 05, but that could've messed up their lotto balls and cost them Aldridge, Roy, and Oden.

I think the big problem is that we drafted Roy so we actually had him on our team technically, but we never really wanted him, so it's the same as passing him altogether, and that happens every draft to every team. Fans just have to get used to it, because it's going to keep happening no matter what team you are. Imagine how pissed Memphis fans are going to be in 5 years when Kevin Love is averaged 20/15 on 55% and Mayo is averaging 20/8 on 41% (20 pts, 8 TOs)

They could have had Chris Paul, but they traded down to get Webster. I agree 100% with the rest of your post.

I think Wittman is more to blame than McHale. Foye probably would have developed into some sort of Dwyane Wade-Joe Dumars hybrid under Nate McMillan.

Well I believe he is still great trade bait and packaged correctly with other players he can net a better player than Roy.
