No KG No problem for Celtics

KG . . . .suspended for throwing a punch at Milwaukee's Andrew Bogut on Saturday and forced to sit out one game.
Celtics coach Doc Rivers decided to start Scalabrine, the little-used big man, rather than pull Leon Powe off the second unit and upset his rotation.

Against the Knicks, but still, the evidence is mounting that KG is the easiest of Boston's Big Three to replace, at least on a short term basis. I'm not saying I'd want to play a seven game series without the man, just that for a night or two, the culture change in Boston can continue with KG's on-the-court contributions.
I've always liked that strategy... Powe's been effective as a 6th man, why mess that up? Good coaching. HEAR THAT, WITTMAN?
My new goal is to make every thread on this board, at least in some tangental way, anti-Wittman.

I won't say you're wrong but I think that would be counter intuitive. Allen and Pierce do so many of the same things that I'd think either could step up and replace the others production for a few games. I'd think KG's interior defense would be the toughest asset to replace from all three.
I think the Celtics had a pretty record last year without Ray Allen, also. Paul Pierce only missed 2 games, so that's not enough to determine how his loss would affect the team.

I'd say Pierce is hardest to replace because they don't really have any SFs on the team other than him. At least they can bring in Powe for KG and T Allen for R Allen. They need KG to get to the finals, but they need Pierce to win it. There's nobody else that can get tough baskets down the stretch of a playoff game.
2nd would be KG, 3rd Rondo, 4th Ray Allen.

I think Allen might be able to make the tough shot at the end of games. He did it for Seattle.

Ray can shoot it really well still, but Pierce's slashing skills are on a top level. He's a really underrated slasher, but he's probably top 5 in the NBA. Lebron and Kobe are 1 and 2, Wade probably 3, after that it's probably Pierce and Ginobili. That spin move gets him anywhere he wants to go. He's a pretty unstoppable scorer between his slashing and shooting when he's on.

To me, "Most Important Celtic" is not the same as "Hardest to Replace."
I agree with devilz that they need KG to get to the Finals and Pierce to win it. However, the Celtics would not regularly handle decent teams without Kevin Garnett, because they don't have nearly as good a replacement. KG's team defense and post scoring help create those opportunities for Pierce and Allen. Moreover, while they are different types of swingmen, if they lost Pierce, Allen can do some of Pierce's things, and vice versa. Nobody can go up to either and say, "We need you to replace Garnett -- go out there and play like KG."
