What do we have in the second round?
I've been a fan since the beginning and I will be until my end.

We may have to wait on that Utah pick which is a shame.

2nd round we do not have our own, as it goes to Detroit for Ronald Dupree (of course the Pistons will get some super stud there who breaks out of the 2nd round). We have 2 of the Heats, Phillys and some other teams, whichever 2 are worse (from the Chalmers deal).

Shrink told me this would be posted here...I drew up that chart with the intention of being general. It may actually be easier to interpret from the point of view of a single team.

What this means for Minnesota

2009

- if New York and Utah are BOTH top-8 teams, Minnesota gets the better draft pick of the two.
- if ONLY Utah is a top-8 team, Minnesota gets Utah's pick.
- All other cases, Minnesota gets nothing.

2010

- if Minnesota got a pick in 2009 through either of the first two scenarios, obviously it's case closed.
- if Minnesota did not get a pick in 2009:
--- if Utah is a top-15 team, Minnesota gets the worse draft pick of New York and Utah's.

--- otherwise Minnesota gets nothing.

2011

- if Minnesota hasn't gotten a pick already, they get Utah's pick if Utah is a top-13 team. Otherwise nothing.

2012

- if Minnesota hasn't gotten a pick already, they get Utah's pick if Utah is a top-14 team. Otherwise nothing.

2013

- if Minnesota hasn't gotten a pick already, they get Utah's pick if Utah is a top-14 team. Otherwise they get Utah's 2014 2nd rounder and cash.

So every circumstance in which Minnesota could receive a pick is coloured in blue. Every circumstance in which Minnesota receives nothing remains in black.

Hope that is at least a little clearer :D

I think Utah's pick is top 22 protected this year, not top 23.

Sure. The info on second rounders isn't as good in the news, because, lets face it, most second rounders don't turn out to be newsworthy.

In 2009, MIN doesn't get its own 2nd. That's owed to DET to complete the Dupree deal a number of years ago. (I'm patting myself on the back for remembering that name)

The Heat would have had three 2nd rounders next year, but now they only get to keep the highest one. In the Chalmers deal we got $2 mil cash and the lowest two of their 2nds, from the 76ers, Heat or Pacers.

BTW, we've done well with the second round picks we've got from the Heat lately, grabbing Craig Smith and Pekovic as the first pick in the second round last season.

We also have the 2010 second rounder from HOU in the Gerald Green for Kirk Snyder deal. HOU ended up letting Green walk, as we probably would have, so I'm happy with that deal as well.

Finally, I've heard it mentioned that we included our 2010 second in the Carney, UTA 1st deal, but I can't get conformation on it.

That's what I know on second rounders. I should probably add that I barely put value on any of them, because only a couple ever do anything in the NBA. If you'd like to prove this to yourself, pick a year that's far enough back to have a feel for the careers of the players, and list them all. Here's ten years back:

1999 2.1 Lakers John Celestand 6'4 178 Villanova 1977-03-06
1999 2.2 Clippers Rico Hill
1999 2.3 Bulls Michael Ruffin 6'9 246 Tulsa 1977-01-21
1999 2.4 Nuggets Chris Herren 6'2 197 Fresno State 1975-09-27
1999 2.5 Nets Evan Eschmeyer 6'11 255 Northwestern 1975-05-30
1999 2.6 Wizards Calvin Booth 6'11 230 Penn State 1976-05-07
1999 2.7 Mavericks Wang ZhiZhi 7'0 255 Bejing (China) 1977-07-08
1999 2.8 Grizzlies Obinna Ekezie 6'9 270 Maryland 1975-08-22
1999 2.9 Magic Laron Profit 6'5 204 Maryland 1977-08-05
1999 2.10 Cavaliers A.J. Bramlett 6'10 227 Arizona 1977-01-10
1999 2.11 Mavericks Gordan Giricek 6'5 210 None 1977-06-20
1999 2.12 Nuggets Francisco Elson
1999 2.13 Timberwolves Louis Bullock
1999 2.14 Hornets Lee Nailon 6'8 241 TCU 1975-02-22
1999 2.15 Rockets Tyrone Washington
1999 2.16 Kings Ryan Robertson 6'5 190 Kansas 1976-10-02
1999 2.17 Knicks J.R. Koch
1999 2.18 76ers Todd MacCulloch 7'0 280 Washington 1976-01-27
1999 2.19 Bucks Galen Young
1999 2.20 Bulls Lari Ketner 6'9 277 Massachusetts 1977-02-01
1999 2.21 Rockets Venson Hamilton
1999 2.22 Grizzlies Antwain Smith
1999 2.23 Trailblazers Roberto Bergersen
1999 2.24 Heat Rodney Buford 6'5 189 Creighton 1977-11-02
1999 2.25 Pistons Melvin Levett
1999 2.26 Celtics Kris Clack
1999 2.27 Warriors Tim Young 7'0 220 Stanford 1976-02-06
1999 2.28 Spurs Emmanuel Ginobili 6'6 210 None 1977-07-28
1999 2.29 Jazz Eddie Lucas

Now, maybe you're the team that picks Ginobili, but you can't see it coming, as evidenced by all the teams that passed on him. If you get a rotation player that's still in the NBA three years after he's drafted, you should consider yourself lucky.

I'll add to shrink's list for other years (just posting the 2nd rounders who have done alright)

1997: Marc Jackson, Anthony Johnson, SJax, Blount
1998: Ruben Patterson, Rashad Lewis, Alston, Mobley, Buckner
1999: Giricek, Elson, Ginoboli
2000: Jaric, Eddie House, Najera, Redd, Cardinal, Jason Hart (again one star and a few role players)
2001: Hassell, Arenas, Okur, watson, bobby simmons
2002: roger mason, gadzuric, boozer, matt barnes, songalia, rasual butler, scola
2003: Kapono, L. Walton, S. Blake, Pachulia, W. Green, Bogans, Bonner, Mo Williams, J. Jones, Korver
2004: Varejao, Duhon, Ariza
2005: Bass, CJ Miles, Turiaf, M. Ellis, Diener, Louis Williams, Gomes, Blatche, amir johnson
2006: craig smith, daniel gibson, millsap, powe
2007 (looking like so far): sessions, m. gasol, a. gray, glen davis, landry

-so to help backup shrink's point, it looks like on average that 5 or 6 players a year end up being NBA worthy (about 18%) and only one or two playres a year are starting quality players (about 5%)
-thus 2nd rounders don't have much value.

Nicely done skorff!

Just so you know, you'll probably see me using your list on the trade board, when some team makes the wolves a bad deal, but says, .. "Hey -- we'll include a second rounder!" You might see it daily until we see less offers like this:

Mike Miller for Kapono + Humphries "and we'll include a second rounder!"

http://www.draftexpress.com/

using that DX mock as a template of availability, I'd go:

7: Tyreke Evans - I guess they don't see him coming out this season, but I don't see why not, otherwise I'd go Derozan
17: Collison
28: Terrence Williams

I'd be very satisfied with that draft. If you get Evans, holy ****, Collison/Evans/Williams is lockdown defense and major influx of athleticism.

I'm convinced he's coming out. I saw thing on TV a while back that said he's only going to to college because of the new rule.

Would you take Tyreke Evans over Jrue Holiday?

For me, it would be no. Evans takes constant gambles on defense and that harms him and his team. I think Jrue is a much more smooth and mature player.

Would Holiday be available at 7-10? Any mock that includes him says no.
