http://basketball.realgm.com/src_wireta ... ee_agency/Sounds really good coming next year and 2010. I'm excited to see Lebron or any studs to play with the Timberwolves.

I got a bit excited when I read that article, but then my pessimism set in. I'm not convinced any big free agent will sign with Minnesota, even if a good core group is already in place.

I hope that that's some super, time traveling KG from 10 years ago, or else we would be waaay overpaying for him.

a Joe Johnson or Chris Bosh wouldn't hurt.

I think we can forget about Bosh/Lebron/Wade/Amare
other than that it's just aging stars and role players
I guess there's a couple guys that might break out before then like Outlaw and Amir Johnson
I'm not feeling it though, I'd rather make a pre-emptive strike and not have to compete w/ 20 other teams when all the good players get snatched up and everybody starts freaking out because they've been selling the 2010 hoax to their fans for 2 years and now they have to overpay for a 36 year old Steve Nash to save face.

would you pay a max contract to a 30 year old Joe Johnson though?
Plus I'd like to think we'd have a good young player at SG by then

Probably. I'd rather overpay Joe Johnson than miss our window to sign an impact player.

Exactly. I think they're just throwing it out there to placate the fans. I don't see us getting the prizes. I don't think LeBron and Wade go anywhere. I think Bosh goes to Miami and Amare to the Knicks.

Lol. We have no chance in landing top tier free agents. The only way this capspace is going to be useful to us is in a trade.
Honestly though, I can see the front office convinced the top guys will come here and just get screwed in the process. Can't wait.

You don't have to sign a top tier free agent, the right role player(s) can make a huge impact.

Not having looked at the numbers recently, I think that's shrink's job, but with smart moves, what are the chances of us bringing in a max free agent this offseason(2009) and again the next(2010)?
That's not putting all your eggs in one basket. It allows us to build through the draft as well and see exactly what we need. Plus, if we bring in a quality free agent in 2009, we're more likely to get one of the big guns from 2010. Obiously it's a pipe dream for LeBron and Wade, but what if we shored up our SF position with Marvin Williams from 2009, he wouldn't take a max deal to get done, just more than the cap cautious Hawks would be willing to match. He brings size, spacing, and fits in age-wise. This year he seems improved, and ready to bust out. Say he gets a Rip Hamilton type deal around 10-12 per. Would require moving Cardinal before then, but their will probably be takers at either this year's deadline, or after July 1st when he becomes a good sized expiring.
C - Thabeet/Love
PF - Jefferson/Smith
SF - Williams/Gomes
SG - Miller/Brewer
PG - Foye/Telfair
So then the year after we're looking at bringing in a top flight guard either at the 1 or 2. Ok, looking through the list, of the guys that actually deserve max contracts, Amare, LeBron, Wade, and Bosh, none are coming here most likely. That's assuming no one blows up between now and then.
Another thing against Minnesota, besides the history of losing, the weak supporting cast, and the cold(haven't you loved this week so far?), but Minnesota has some of the higher state income taxes. Obviously there's draws to Florida due to the weather, but not paying state income taxes has got to be quite nice. Adds to the size of the contract right there.

I'm in favor of getting Marvin Williams. He has really rounded out his game this year. Hitting 3's and a decent clip and everything.

I see your point, but I can't imagine being a contender with Joe Johnson as our main guy. And once we spend that money, we're pretty much locked into that core of Jefferson/Joe Johnson as our top duo for at least 3-5 years.
Who knows though, a lot can change in 2 years.

I wonder though, how many teams would be able to offer two high-level deals to these 2010 FAs. I know the Knicks are in position to do so, but how many other teams are? I just wonder if we were in the position, if a couple guys would say, "Hey, I'll team up with this guy and play there" type thing, while having Al Jefferson still there. I could see it being possible, though obviously incredibly unlikely.

how many players in 2010 are even worth high level deals (max or close to it)?
I count: Lebron, Wade, JJ, Amare, Bosh, and maybe Manu and McGrady for a couple of ballsy (possibly stupid) teams

Isn't 2011 the year the pick the Wolves owe to the Clippers becomes unprotected? That could be a factor in how aggressive the Wolves are in free agency in 2010.

I agree, throw money at Joe Johnson like Orlando threw it at Rashard Lewis. Is he ridiculously overpaid? Yes. Is Orlando ridiculously improved? Also yes. Jefferson, Love, Foye, Brewer, a high pick this year, and Johnson? That's probably the best we can hope for.

Pau Gasol, Marc Gasol, Tyson Chandler, Joe Johnson, Caron Butler are all guys that would fit well here.
