OK, he's not a favorite of mine, but many sources are saying that Philly is trying very hard to move the guy. He's 27, and his contract runs the infamous third year:

Samuel Dalembert $11,238,564 $12,125,694 $13,012,823

I've been reading from PHI fans, and they are all over the board on him, and many just want to get out from under the contract. I have to admit though, my ears perked a bit at the offer of Telfair + Cardinal, while another says we wouldn't even offer that.

I know we need a center badly, but are we at the "Sam Dalembert-level" of desperation?

I know this kills 2010, but does it kill a chance at Marvin Williams this summer?

It's a tough one as he'd be the type of player we could really use. The problem is the contract.

Would his production be enough to justify the contract?
Is this the big money trade we want to use our expirings on?
If we're intent on Jefferson and Love up front, should our 3rd option be making that much money?

I really think that we can get a cheaper 3rd big body to put in our active rotation. I'd be willing to throw one of our later draft picks at a cheaper option and use that money on a different player that could help. Or use an expiring for a veteran option at better cost. There's going to be teams willing to deal for less than value to get out of contracts and I think Collins, Booth et al could be pretty valuable.

If we can send crap like Cardinal and Telfair to get him, sure, but no one that can actually fetch value like Miller, Foye, or Love, like some posters on the trade board have been requesting.

The trade would have to be Dalembert for Cardinal, Madsen, and Telfair. And even then I'd probably want an option for a pick swap with the Miami pick, unprotected of course. Dalembert isn't a good enough talent to add that 13mil in 2010, plus the additional we'd have to pay the next two years. And since we'd be helping them clear enough space to sign a 9-11mil free agent in 2010, they should have no problem giving up the spots in the draft.

Even with all that considered, I'm still not crazy about the trade.

Madsen+Cardinal+McCants/Telfair/Smith for Dalembert and Rush would make us a better team, but I don't think he is worth the 13 million in 2010. We could use him in a three man rotation with Love and Jefferson at the 4 and 5, and our interior defense becomes so much better than Al/Love/Smith.

It would kill the chance to get Marvin Williams, unless we found a way to move Miller for Szczerbiak and make room. Hmm, maybe a three way, or rather 2 seperate trades contingent on each other.

Cleveland gives - Wally, Hickson, and 2009 1st
Cleveland gets - Miller and Collins

Philidelphia gives - Dalembert
Philidelphia gets - Telfair, Cardinal, Madsen, Cleveland 1st and Boston 1st

Minnesota gives - Miller, Collins, Telfair, Cardinal, Madsen, and Boston 1st
Minnesota gets - Wally, Daly, Hickson, and Philly 1st

Cleveland has to give up a bit more in Hickson to get Miller and still the nice cap savings of Collins

Philly does a salary dump of Daly, picks up some draft picks, and has room for a decent 2010 signing.

Minnesota saves 10mil in 2009, so they have about 18mil to spend on free agents, 10mil going to Marvin Williams, leaving them with 12mil to sign someone in 2010. If they can move Gomes it's enough to bring in a max free agent.

C - Dalembert/Draft(Ogilvy)
PF - Jefferson/Love
SF - Marvin Williams/Brewer
SG - Joe Johnson/Draft(Derozan)
PG - Draft(Harden)/Foye

This running an NBA team stuff is easy. Someone needs to hire me fast.

I think this would stop us from targeting Thabeet(assuming we are to begin with) if the FO decided to pursue Sam D.. I, personally think Thabeet could do the same things that Dalembert is doing now.

Isnt K. Love averaging basically the same numbers as Dalembert?

I am willing to be patient to avoid taking on another huge contract for an average player.

I would take back Theo before I would Dalembert.

Why would you guys even care about the 2010 situation? I highly doubt any high profile FA will even consider joining the Wolves. Most of them are trying to get a big contract and win at the same time.

Here's another idea, I'm bastardizing out of a PHI poster's three-team trade:

Dalembert (3 yr) + Andre Miller (exp) + Jason Smith + Kareem Rush

for

Mike Miller + Brian Cardinal + Mark Madsen

I understand that Dalembert is worth less than an expiring, but do the prospects Jason Smith and Kareem Rush do enough for you guys?

Lots of players are going to be available in 2010 as players clear their rosters, and the idea is for the wolves to look for a secondary player. Moreover, these expirings and cap space have value as well. Setting up for 2010 means having commodities we could trade to other teams that want to enhance their position.

The question isn't "Why should MIN care?"

The question is "Is this the best value we can get with 2010 cap space?"

You're right, the Wolves should just pack up and leave. Hell, LeBron won't be coming here, so there's no sense in trying to sign anyone. We should just trade for every bad contract in the league.
