So Ollie has been very helpful to us, but he's out for another couple weeks, and he's not a long-term solution to our team. If we waive him now, his salary won't be guaranteed, so we'd get two benefits:

1. A have a little more cap room to use to try to get something by helping a team get farther under the lux. For example, TOR will probably do something today.

2. An extra roster spot, which we could use to take a look at someone with a 10-day contract.

On the other hand, Ollie has been a real find for us at PG, and well worth his contract.


So do you think we keep him? Or let him go?

I'd like to keep him unless we find a better vet pg. I highly doubt it though.

plus, do we really want to play Foye pg for the rest of the season?

Ever since Ollie went out, Telfair has finally seemed to get a clue how to play. I'm not sure if the two are related, but it may have an impact on the decision. If Telfair can keep playing like he has with Ollie back, then I'd like to see them keep Ollie around as a defensive stopper for those nights where Telfair and Foye just can't handle the other team's guard.

Keep him for the season. He's helped the team and it's not like he's getting paid a bazillion dollars anyway.

and in order to gain a roster spot we might as well cut Booth since Philly already paid his buy-out. no need to cut Ollie.

If we want the spot cut Booth. Ollie is a good vet and can be a nice backup.

I see no need to cut him. I think cutting Ollie and then signing a replacement with a 10 day contract is a bit counter-intuitive.

If anyone should be cut it should be Booth. We dont even pay his salary and he has played 53 seconds all season.

Who are the 10 day contracts we have in mind? Dee Brown? Please, no. Darius?

If we cut Booth, his salary is still on our books/cap. If we cut Ollie, his is not.

I would need to know more about how PHI is paying Booth's salary to understand how cutting him would affect us. I think we have to be paying him salary according to the CBA, but PHI is recompensing us for it. I don't think its just up-front cash, because the Wolves front office said a few months ago that they hoped to trade Booth for a late pick. It just feels like there's something off going on there.

Personally, I like Ollie and I'm just throwing the question out there. However, if we cut him, or included him in a trade to a team like TOR who really needs to cut some salary .. that would make some sense. And don't feel too bad for Ollie .. I think with his play this year, he'd certainly be offered a contract somewhere. It was just bad timing for him to get injured now.

Let me give an example of an Ollie trade:

MIN gets Hassan Adams and TOR (15-21) pick

TOR gets Kevin Ollie and MIA (18-16) pick + BOS pick


TOR is just over the lux, and waiving Ollie helps them save their lux share of $2 mil+

I wouldn't do this trade since there's still a chance Toronto ends up better than Miami.

Um...why would we trade 2 first rounders for a player we would cut and 1 1st rounder equivalnt to the Miami one? Im not following.

TOR pick is currently #10, MIA is #17. Miami is 6th in the East, Toronto is 11th.

Now this could certainly change, and maybe the right way to offer it is as the rights to swap picks.

But who knows how things are going to end up? I'm just offering that as an example of the type of trade value Ollie could have if he was dropped by a team that could use the salary cap relief to climb under the lux.

I feel we can get another pick without giving up as much. Dont Booth and Ollie make close to the same anyways?

You're right that teams are working hard to get under the lux, because they can clear that extra $2-$3 mil by retaining their lux share, plus whatever salary is doubled over the lux. Those $700,00 could cost you $3-$4 mil, and late 1sts sell for a max of $3 mil. Getting under these boundaries, like the lux threshhold or the salary cap are big deals, as we showed by clearing a 1st in addition to Carney and having most of the contracts paid so PHI could have a little more money to be able to sign Brand. DEN actually got a good deal, because they got a prospect, and that OKC second rounder DEN received might only be 5-10 spots lower in the draft, and an unguaranteed contract to boot.

You might be right about TOR if we could compensate them elsewhere. Everyone likes 1sts, but CLE is at $64 mil with just 7 players on 2009-10. They might be interested in the UTA pick if it looks like it will be deferred a year, because they wouldn't have to add guaranteed salary next year that might make it hard for them to get under the lux when they fill their roster. McCants might not be a bad addition either, if they send back more salary than they take in.

Maybe something like

Joey Graham (exp) + Vozkuhl (exp) + prot 1st for McCants (exp) + Ollie + 2nd, or maybe UTA pick

... and I think the Bargnani experiment is back on in TOR, but if they'd rather have the pick
