Why for Minnesota?

The Wolves instantly save money (thanks to the insurance that'll kick in on Raef's contract in a few games here) and they become potential players in the 2009 FA class. All in all, this is basically a salary dump move them. They also get a free look at Frye and a First Round Pick.

One could argue that Minnesota isn't exactly a place where NBA players flock to as FA's. While this has some truth to it, the cap space the Wolves open here could also be used in a trade since they'd be able to take on more salary than they send out. Potentially allowing them to get a really good player for essentially nothing.

Why for Portland?

They get some veteran SF help with Miller. He's on a shot contract and both him and Cardinal will be expiring next year, right before the big 2010 FA class. And thanks to the Miles situation, Portland might take a look at seeing if they can actually try to position themselves for some cash in 2010. Getting rid of their 2009 1st round pick would be a start to not taking on extra salary that they don't really need at this point.

True, but Portland obviously didn't think he was worth that much, and his value has only gone down since that rumor came out. Conley has been moved to the bench and at least one Memphis poster has come to these boards talking about possible rumors of Mayo moving to the 1, so Memphis might not be looking for as much as the were a few months ago.

Also true, but until an actual deal goes through, that deal is just idle speculation and there is no proof that either Milwaukee or Memphis thinks that that deal is close.

The idea here for POR is that even though POR could still be under the salary cap in 2009 despite Darius Miles, that now it might be better to go for wins now, and consolidate space in 2010. POr will certainly be a desirable free agent destination in either case, and they'll have a better feel for what type of FA they need. However, 2010 includes big new contracts for Roy and Aldridge might mean getting out of Webster's $5 mil would be helpful.

That is funny. It also reminds me.. that three team deal by aQuintus had the Grizzlies and Blazers both in it. I can't see a trade involving those two teams happening for a long time.
