Right now this is way too big, but this is the general idea. In a weak draft year,why not deal away our assets, including draft picks, for pieces that may work with our team cornerstones, some upsides fillins, and future picks... Works even better if our pick this year is not good enough to be protected and ends up going to LA.

Hinrich - Big, distributing point with defensive skills. I still think he's ideal next to Foye.
G. Wallace - The best fit, IMO, at 3 for us.

Morrison - Worth the risk as a guy who can fill it up as a 3rd or 4th scoring option.
Hunter - Vet PG/SG
Ruffin - Size only
Charlotte 2010 #1 pick (top 5 protected)
Chicago 2010 #1 pick (lottery protected)

Noah

Charlotte Gives:
Wallace

Noah would form a solid defensive frontcourt with Okafor. Not a lot of O, but it gives them the size they need. Gomes fills some of what they lose with Wallace, and McCants brings them the scoring they need. Plus they can fill a hole in this season's draft.

Chicago Gets:
Telfair
Smith
Miller

Chicago Gives:
Hinrich
Noah
Hunter
Ruffin
2010 #1 pick (lottery protected)

Telfair can fill Hinrich's shoes as backup PG, for substantially less $$. Smith is the low post scorer they need. Miller is the key, as he really puts them over the top as far as playoff contention.


The plus here is that we end up with only our own #1 pick this year, but two decent picks in 2010. We could then use our cap space this year (Collins, Carney, Booth et al expiring) to bring in a FA, and once we're butting up against the cap, use the two pics next year to go after needed players (Rubio?)

2 – Foye/Carney/Brewer
3 – Wallace/Morrison/Brewer
4 – Love/Ruffin/Madsen
5 – Jefferson/Collins/Ajinca

Next Year

I don't disagree (except with Gopher. I don't want Noah) This is more about the theory and less about the practice... How do y'all feel about punting this year's draft?

mn declines purely for cap reasons.

I haven't been watching as much College ball as i've used to because this draft is so weak, and everyone outside of a few players need to stay one or two more years in school.

Last years draft would have been so sweet to have multiple picks, but we are the Wolves, we get the most picks in a weak draft.

I dont think we should be trading all of these young pieces and picks for older, mediocre pieces and picks.

I'd rather have proven talented youth in the deal with the draft picks, if we're gonna trade half of our roster.

I like the overall concept, but I'm not high on Hinrich or Noah's value around the league, so this specific trade isn't for me. What I like though is the concept of moving some of our picks to 2010, and also getting more value by moving some of our pieces to teams where they are better fit. Theoretically, as much as we like each of our players, when we consider the thirty teams, its unlikely that MIN is the best place for every single player. There are 29 other teams, and 29 other fits out there where a player may have more trade value. MIN may have an edge over the average team, since they know our system and we've marketed the player to local fans, but the specific skill-set/contract/age/etc... probably fit another team's goals better than ours. I think the players in ChazzleDazzle's trades are the most likely to be have more value elsewhere.

I suppose my answer to this thread depends on what next years draft is like. Does anyone know the overall depth of next years draft or who would likely be the top several picks?

Another thing to consider is that the wolves may play themselves out of their top pick this year, so they may want to package their remaining picks to move up or settle for a couple late 1st rounds. So again depending on next years draft depth, maybe the wolves do play for next year.

I would imagine(not sure of all the timing) teams might be willing to trade their 1st rounders next year to avoid the guaranteed 1st round money that would eat into their 2010 cap space.

Why is Hinrich considered a big point guard? He's 6'3" 186 pounds. That's really not all that big. In fact he's smaller than Randy Foye. Not to mention he sucks.

I think after the break KLove can average 18 points and 12 boards and believe they can make the playoffs.
That trade would really make them great except it's pretty unrealistic. A Foye-Love-AL is a great dynamic.

Which would be a pace that would win 60 games over the course of a full season. Let's be optimistic while being realistic, folks. The Wolves aren't making the play-offs this year.

Exactly. And moreover, the Wolves would have to pass two teams with a 10.5 game headstart, and only half a season to go. I could see maybe one of the following teams collapsing, but not two:

PHO, DAL, UTA, POR, HOU, DEN, NOH, SA, LAL

Playoffs aren't realistic this year. It's possible that they play their way out of a top-10 pick but not into the playoffs. I can see them maybe going .500 the rest of the way (they've been playing at .42 under McHale) but that would only give them 34 wins total.
