New Info on Gomes Contract?

Post#1 » by shrink » Sat Jan 24, 2009 1:55 pm

Maybe I just never noticed this before, but I was on the storyteller site and found some information on Gomes I'd never seen before. The numbers are the same, but the conditions are slightly different:

2008-09 $3,650,000
2009-10 $4,017,500
2010-11 $4,385,000
2011-12 $4,752,000
2012-13 $5,120,000

2010-11 is partially guaranteed for $1,000,000, 2011-12 for $1,000,000, 2012-13 for $750,000, all becoming fully guaranteed if not waived before 6/30/10.

As I understood it before, it was listed that we had team options for 2010 and 2011, and Gomes had a player option for 2012, so this is worse for the team, but I think its still a very fair contract. Gomes is a borderline starter in the NBA. He can start here and he's a useful player when he does. I think he's one of our best players for keeping his cool, and making a bucket when we need to answer another team's run. However, he wouldn't be a starter for many NBA teams, and its possible he won't be one here in the future, as younger, more talented players continue to develop. If he plays well, I could see we might keep him on past summer 2010, but I think its more likely that we buy him out for $2.75 mil and create more valuable 2010 cap space.

Still a very nice contract for both the Wolves and Gomes, and a tradable commodity.

This makes alot of sense because I don't think those team options sit right with the CBA. It's still a very good deal from our end, It leaves him a very tradeable player up until 6/30/10.

Yeah I'm not sure why you'd think they were team options, as that's not possible. I always remembered it being partially guaranteed for the last 3 years, maybe the amounts are new news though.

There will be more pressure on him next season if Carney sticks around and Brewer is healthy again. I think he'll get a bit of interest and would be a nice addition to a contender off the bench, but then again not too many contenders look to the Timberwolves for bench help.

Celtic fan here. Next season, if Ryan Gomes looks a tad bit expendable or McHale wants to clear up cap room, I wouldn't be surprised if he was traded back to Boston. Brian Scalabrine will be an expiring contract next year, and is a solid role player in the mold of Gomes (particularly as of late).

They could do the trade in February 2010 and Minny clears a little more cap space for 2010 to get another piece. Danny Ainge has already called Gomes one of the best players and human beings he's been around in the game - that was right after the KG trade in the press conference.

Interesting stuff about Ainge, thanks for bringing that over. I suppose that if MIN wasn't competitive, that swap would get them out of the buy-out. I have a hard time predicting right now though how much we will be relying on Gomes one year from now.

Sorry to pimp my own site after not posting here in forever, but I thought some people might find this valuable:
