The Traded Player Exception we got for Gerald Green expires in ten days. At $69,021,667, we can use it and stay under the lux, since the salary would be pro-rated for the number of games left in the season for the new player.
These teams are over the lux, and so the TPE would be worth double .. and may help them reclaim their $3 mil lux share.

Even if we stay under the lux, wouldnt helping one of these teams get under it reduce Taylor's piece of the pie? I could see him thinking like that.

Could we pry Robin Lopez away from Phoenix somehow?

Can the TPE be combined with another Wolves player going out?
Something like Booth/TPE for Frye?

Nope, can't combine TPE's with a player or even other TPE's.
This can be used to acquire a player at $1.54 mil or less (100% + $100,000), so Robin Lopez and Frye are both out. I'm curious if we could use it to augment a Biedrins deal, but I'd have to work on it by hand, since ESPN's TPE guy didn't calculate our other TPE deals right, and doesn't have it on their trade checker*.
* for those that care, TPE's are calculated by matching players up the players on each side to create the most fortuitous combination (max TPE) for each side. These sides can vary. It appears that the guy who does it for ESPN didn't realize we could use what was left of the blount TPE to do the Philly deal earlier, and preserve the Green TPE. However, other sources have it listed, like this one:

Re: $1.44 TPE expires on 2/21
It would be beneficial to pick up a 1.4mil crap player that expires, won't get playing time, and could bring us an extra pick. It's basically ends up like paying nearly 3mil for most likely a late round future pick. Make it a 2010 or beyond pick with an older team that has a chance of falling apart and we could greatly benefit.
Though I don't think this is right shrink...

The way I understand it the luxury tax is figured out by taking the total salary of the players on your roster at the end of the season and if you're over you get hit, if you're under you get the bonus. I don't think the pro-rated stuff has anything to do with luxury tax.

Re: $1.44 TPE expires on 2/21
I built this one a few weeks back. Its simultaneous trades, but I modified it to be easier to read, and it used to have DET sending us some cash. With the deadline in eight days, maybe its worth a second look?
EDIT: Its hard to get the accurate number from DET cap watchers, but they think they are just over the lux. however, if storyteller's right, Ollie would have to be excluded from the trade, and it still might not save them enough money.
shrink wrote: MIN GETS: Alex Acker (exp) + Wil Bynum (exp) + MIN 2nd returned
DET GETS: MIN TPE (part of the Gerald Green $1.44 mil) + Kevin Ollie
WHY FOR MIN: Ollie's been playing great, and has started 10 games for the Wolves. However, this isn't the season that matters -- they are playing for the future. Second rounders aren't great, but MIN's should be in the 31-40 range, and they can stash him over in Europe. Telfair's been playing much better, and Bynum can be their 3rd PG, or they can waive him and audition others on 10-day contracts.
WHY FOR DET: First, Ollie's not only is a significant upgrade over Wil Bynum, but best of all, he's very experienced playing next to Iverson as well. Its hard to know the specific number, but DET posters believe moving Acker or Bynum would get them under the lux, saving them about $4 mil. ($3.1 in lux share + $0.7 in salary + $0.2 in lux doubling). DET saves $4 mil and gets a vet upgrade at PG for a second rounder.

fyi, the tax is determined at the end of the year. So the salary we would pay is pro-rated over the rest of the year, but the full salary is what counts against the cap.. But we're like $2Mil under, so we won't end up over it anyways.

I don't see how that would work out.

What I'm thinking here, in broad terms, is that if we part of an Amare/Biedrins three-way, we could add more value to the deal by simultaneously agreeing to eat a PHO player, and save money for Sarver under this year's lux. For example, we can help make PHO more agreeable to sending Amare to GSW if we were willing to take Amundsen for our TPE.
I don't have time to break it down with the real pencil pushing, but that's kind of the direction I was headed. Our TPE is more valuable to PHO than us.

I see. Though Amundsen is getting the minimum, so that TPE wouldn't come in to play anyways. Dudley and Tucker would be the only guys that would apply to from Phoenix.

That makes sense. I don't follow the Suns bench, but it looks like neither tucker nor Dudley have big roles.
