Thorpe on K-Love

Love is not a good finisher on putbacks and other contested finishes inside. Nor is he a good shooter from the perimeter. But I have no doubt he's going to excel in both areas soon. And that should keep Wolves fans smiling for years to come.

He is still learning how to play with his new, slimmer body. And I expect him to get stronger and leaner over the next two offseasons. Practicing finishing with explosiveness around the rim should be Priority No. 1.

Meanwhile, his jumper looks fine -- he often shoots too fast, but he will slow down in time and it's going to be a huge weapon for him.

He's already a double-double guy, playing less than 30 minutes a night, so when he adds these two skills to his game, his scoring could jump into the 18-plus point range by the time he's 21 years old and getting more minutes. Figure his rebounding will swell to 12-plus a game, and you have yourself a very productive and efficient starting center. And we haven't even mentioned his passing gifts.

thought it was interesting that someone actually talked about KLove in a way that says he has potential.

Seems like everyone writes him off as already being the best he can be.

Which is ridiculous seeing how his is 20 years old, and can olny get more powerful.. as well as become a better finisher.

Thorpe is unusual for a basketball writer in that he looks at things through the eyes of a trainer. People look at Greg Oden's physique and are awed, and rightly so. And anyone can see that, say, Oliver Miller, carried too much weight.

Guys that are in between are tougher for a novice to evaluate. I just read this in the Ryan Gomes thread - should Gomes be 15-20 pounds lighter? How would that change his game? Is Shaq (who is not the athlete he used to be) overweight? What about a guy like Brewer, how much muscle could/should he add before it starts to effect his quickness (which is what, we hope, will make him a special defensive player.) Thorpe can answer those questions better than most writers.

In regards to Love specifically - I'm not sure he should be playing center in the NBA for 30 minutes per night, but if he improves in the areas Thorpe mentions (explosiveness, finishing ability over bigger guys) as well as becoming a better position defender, he'll be a tough matchup at the very least.

How badass would it be if Love showed up next year all roided out and was this huge thick muscle bound beast that played Center for us. Hopefully he has a late growth spurt, adds a couple more inches to his height and we will be set.

I like that he called him a center and not a power forward

I think we all know there's lots of potential with Love, as we have watched things in his game that could use some improving, like as Thorpe mentioned, his explosion to the rim. I believe Love will be in the gym working on his body in the future, and I do think he will become a more explosive player because of it. If this rookie season hasn't shown him he needs to work on his body, then I don't know what will.

I think his teammates should take him to the beach everyday in the offseason and use the power hawt gurlz to encourage him to chisel up

Lets not forget my favorite thing about k-love, unlike his cocky counterparts is that he has other intangibles like a strong work ethic and overall intelligence especially for his age. Both of these talents lead me to believe that he will work his booty off (literally) in the offseason and improve a facet of his game every year.

very good read. And I agree that he will be the center long term not Al. A late growth spurt would be nice, but dont get ur hope up.

Love is all around a class act. His work ethic is second to none and who wouldn't want him as a teammate?

I noticed he is finishing much better the last couple games. lay-ups and power moves. Anyone else notice that?

yes. shooting 10 of 12 last night was a product of that. I know Utah's frontline isn't really known to be a defense juggernaut but they are a tough one. I'm glad to see Love taking the next step offensively.

Out of all the people praising K-Love now, only a few (Devilz being one of them) talked him up before the draft. I guess we can see the real basketball minds at work.

Love is #73 in dunks made with 29. Should be 30-31 after the Jazz game.

Check out the people he is ahead of.

Shrunk - To be fair, we had the #3 pick in the draft with Mayo on the board and potentially Beasley if Riley's talk wasn't just smoke. Nobody except Devilz wanted Kevin Love, and I will admit that Kevin Love is now my boy.

Devil can testify, I was on that bus also. (*besides my love of Hibbert)

personally, I probably reluctantly gone Beasley if he was available, though at the time I said something like I hope Beasley is off the board so we can take Love guilt-free, but I would've at least taken Beasley and looked for a sweet trade.

I'm kind of the same this year w/ Harden and Evans, though I have much less support as almost no one likes Evans. Especially not Hollinger I'm sure since Evans' number most likely would look horrible when run through Hollinger's supercomputer.

Rev before the draft:
Mayo-mayo-Mayo or lopez. End of story.

I'm definitely on the Evans bus with you.

I think my list right now is a three way tie between Holiday, Thabeet, and Evans. Evans keeps creeping higher and higher.
