Via wiretap..
http://basketball.realgm.com/src_wireta ... _not_exec/Glen made it pretty clear that Mchale's days of front offices are over here in Minnesota. That's good to hear! At least we know that if he quits coaching for us after this year he's done for good.

Let's just hope this means a commitment to a proven coach that the players will respect and play for, as I'm pretty sure McHale won't have interest in coaching long term.

Does anyone think this could be a scare tactic by Glen?? We know Mchale isn't fond of coaching but does he want to leave the organization completely? Maybe Glen is cutting off the alternatives therefore forcing Mchale to coach....or leave.

I don't think Taylor is offering any ultimatum to McHale here. Taylor went after McHale in 1994 to help him with the team, and McHale was up front about everything he's done. Taylor feels the Joe Smith incident was his own fault, so when McHale fell on the sword for him, I think McHale's job security was guaranteed. Even in this article, Taylor points out that he thinks the organization is in a good position, and that might even give McHale credit there. We certainly have a better future than we did two years ago.
However, I think this is all moot. McHale won't be returning to the front office, and I think the strain on his back from traveling will cause him to relinquish the coaching reigns (though you can tell even here Taylor wants to keep him around). I strongly believe that McHale will be with the club only as a "special assistant," so he can work with the big men, avoid travel, and put less time into the team. I think McHale will have Taylor's ear on who will follow him as coach, and while its probably very unlikely, I think McHale will suggest Flip Saunders, and Taylor will agree.

Man, hopefully we get a legit NBA coach in here. We better not hire some nobody who we waste another two seasons with.

I think I'd be disappointed if McHale quit

I think he got a bad rap in Cleveland. Really, we should check to see if he'd be interested in coming to Minnesota. $2mil/year should get him here.

maybe if we could transmute McHale/Casey/Wittman/Saunders's best qualities into one entity, we'd have a supercoach. or they'd morph together and get all their worst qualities and be Mike Dunleavy... but we'll just hope that doesn't happen. Realistically, Flip and Eddie Jordan are probably 2 of the best coaches available unless I'm forgetting someone (maybe Sam Mitchell)

No thanks on Sam Mitchell. Not entirely sure what Whitman's "best qualities" are, though. I think he'd be a decent college coach, though.
Casey's defense, with Flip's offense, with McHale's fundamentals and motivation?

Now that's a coach! Somebody put a phone call out to Fwevane McCasers!

I want McHale back, and I'm very worried that if he leaves we're gonna get a B-level coach.
If he is gone though, what about Fratello?

this is a two edged sword, the worst case is Mike Dunleavy, a terrible coach who has no motivation, no court sense, terrible rotations, AND is the GM...

Can it really get any worse, though? It's a risk I'm willing to take. And if Dunleavy v2.0 bombs out, we can always hire Whitman.

He'll ALWAYS be available.

Good Move...Timberwolves need to take some attention off him.
