Recent Drafts---for the record
I think after the recent 20/20 draft history talk it would be nice to have a thread where people say who they liked and where they stand. I will start.
2005--I mentioned McCants once pre-draft as a combo guard prospect. The attitude worried me, but I loved the skill set. During the draft I wanted Julius Hodge and Warrick more than Mccants. (*I still think Hodge could be a decent rotation guy) McCants rookie year and soph/Jr year I enjoyed his game. He frustrated me more than any player I have seen. All the skill in the world, but could never put it together.
2006--pre-draft I bought into the idea that KG needed a scoring pg and whether it was Roy or Foye I would be happy. Gay scared me with his apathy. I like Bargs but did not know where he would fit with KG. Ironically, I thought S.Williams could be a physical gary-trent+defense but not worth the pick. When we got Roy I was very happy. I thought Roy could be a Jalen Rose point-fwd maybe startin at the SG and handling the ball while McCants could start at the pg but really play off the ball. When we made the trade for Foye I was still ok with it because I was concerned about Roy's knee and I was excited for the offensive potential of Foye. I still remember many of the draft experts thinking Foye could be incredibly talented. I like Big Pg's that can hit jump shots (Deron Williams) and got my hopes up. I understand now that Roy is an amazing player. I wonder if Foye was in a better system/coach and did not have the knee injury if he could have been a better player, but I would not expect him on Roy's level. I still think Foye can be a big part of our future. But we need to decide if he can play the PG, if he is a long-term undersized SG or if he is a 6th man. He cannot have the uncertainity every year. We need a plan and we need to work that plan out.
2007--I wanted Green the most. I had a love/hate with hawes (lots of skill, but soft/little def and I worry about injury) but Brewer was my #3 (2 if Hawes is out) I know Brewer struggled big time in his rookie year and now has the knee injury. I still think he can be a Childress for us. He has good tools, just needs some time to realize them. I had young at #4 but I still would rather have Corey at the time of the draft.
2008---This was a tough year. I loved Mayo for most of the draft. I never liked Beasley and even with my crazy man-love for Hibbert my goal was to trade McCants for the pick to get Hibbert. The days leading up to the draft my debate was Lopez or Mayo. The last week before the draft that debate turned into Love/Mayo. (*I was concerned Lopez would struggle to rebound at the pro level) I believed that Love could lose weight and his hands+BBIQ would make him a very effective player. He has similar athletic numbers to Horford and I was/am fine with an undersized al/Love 4/5. Mayo's standing reach worried me. I still feel mayo will be a very good player, but I do not think he is the superstar we think he could be. If Kobe is the first step, Roy is the second then mayo can lead the 3rd group. I think Mayo/Love would look great on the same team. I think both guys will be fringe all-stars and I am cool with that. I just wish Mike Miller was the Mike Miller we knew in memphis.
I prefer to wait 3-4 years before I declare if the player was successful in he draft. It is too early for even Foye for me, but waaaay to early for Brewer/Love

You wanted Paul Millsap with our first rd pick? or are you talking about second round?
Are you speaking as a timberwolf or as a blazer?

I wanted Roy in the first and Millsap and Jones in the second. Disappointing night for me, to say the least.
(actually I wanted to trade our two 2nd rounders to move up into the first and get Millsap, I didn't think he'd fall to us)

Re: Recent Drafts---for the record
2005 i dont even remember who i wanted, i didnt really follow the draft until the following year
2006: Gay was who i wanted most, the knock on him was that he didnt always "try" but i figured that KG would kick him in the ass and turn that motor on and that would be a ridiculous 3-4 combo. I wasnt big on Roy but i did like Foye. I was just glad Morrison was off the board
2007: I was also a Jeff Green fan, still like him. I never thought Brandan Wright would fall to us and i exploded on here after we passed on him and Marc Gasol (who i loved) in the 2nd. Brewer was not high on my list. IIRC we brought Brew, Julian Wright and someone else i think it was for a workout and Brew got worked.
2008: Mayo all the way. Made the petition and everything. I overlooked not getting back into the 1st round. I overlooked taking Pekovic (who i knew nothing about at the draft and thought he was just a Rasho v2.0) I overlooked selling the 34th pick when there were still about 6-7 guys on the board i wanted. I overlooked it all because we picked Mayo and were told he was here to stay. Then i found out at about 11-12 of the deal and was furious. Im still mad actually, though its not Love's fault, he has exceeded expectations and still has plenty of room to grow.
I too give players 3-4 years before i start to come to conclusions on what kind of player they are. i still think Foye can be a really good player.

Re: Recent Drafts---for the record
2005 - Any of the 5 wings that went directly after McCants - A. Wright, G. Green, Granger, Warrick. Hated McCants. Julius Hodge never had a chance in my eyes.
2006 - Brandon Roy all the way, other than my assumption that NBA decision makers would never be stupid enough to let him slip to where the Wolves were picking. Would have taken Rudy Gay over Foye 100x out of 100.
2007 - Anybody but Brewer. I was certain he'd be a bust, long before draft night. Brandan Wright, Hawes, Noah, J. Wright especially.
2008 - Brook Lopez. I was neutral on Mayo vs Love at the time, though I tended to play devil's advocate towards the "string up anybody in favor of somebody other than Mayo" crowd. I was downright militant in my disdain for the trade of the 2nd round pick, and received plenty of heat for that around here.
So maybe some of you can see why the recent drafts have left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth...

Re: Recent Drafts---for the record
2005- Actually liked the McCants pick
2006- Gay .. He was arguably going to go #1, but fell to us and i was like O_O .. but we took Roy then Foye
2007- Thad Young or Al Thorton .. I wanted an athletic wing.
2008- Mayo or Lopez .. Love never even crossed my mind for a second. I wanted Mayo because I saw star potential in him(still do), and Lopez because we needed a legit defensive center to grow with Al.

Re: Recent Drafts---for the record
2005 - Didn't really pay attention. I was happy with McCants when we too him.
2006 - I was all about Rudy Gay, didn't even know who the heck Roy was. My brother was pissed when we tool him, citing that Roy was just a player who was a good all around guy but did nothing great. Pretty much like Gomes. Then when Roy was traded for Foye my bother was happy and the analyst where talking about how Foye is a great finisher.
2007 - I thought it was just a really bad draft class and didn't know who to take. I wasn't really sold on Brewer though and a lot of people here wanted him. I thought he couldn't do much. I did kind of like Hawes.
2008 - The clinic all day everyday. I thought it was win win. I didn't want Love for sure but never thought we would go for him. I liked Lopez too actually and felt like was better than people gave him credit for. I though Love would be a mess on our squad though. Second round I was livid when we passed up on Jordan, twice.

Re: Recent Drafts---for the record
05 Warrick all the way
06 Gay and Bargnani were my favs, but I talked myself into Foye since the whole world knew 2 weeks before the draft that's who we were going to take. Was shocked, but ready to roll w/ Roy when we grabbed him initally
07 Thornton was my early favorite, Noah was probably my fav around draft time. Nick Young was intriguing too but I didn't think he was in the mix at all so I didn't really count him. Really wasn't interested in Brewer at all and was a little disappointed when we grabbed him after hearing how Thornton rocked his world in the pre-draft workout. I've busted his balls relentlessly since he's been here; I was at the game at the end of his rook season when he had a wide open fast break but lost his dribble and took off too far on a dunk and clanked it off the front of the rim, everybody in the arena groaned, but I've grown to accept it and hopefully he works hard and proves himself yet. If he can be a consistent corner 3 guy with defense, I'll be happy
08 I knew we had no chance at Rose, really hoped Mia would take Mayo 2 so we could have Beasley at 3. Started hopping on Watters' Lopez bandwagon and he was my target, but then I left Lopez for Kevin Love. What can I say, I'm a whore. I get bored easily.
09 would love Rubio head and shoulders above all others the most, Evans/Harden/Aminu and company are in the next group. Thabeet is a wildcard still, I'd hope somebody at a need position steps up, but if Thabs is the clear BPA come draft time, I'd relent
for the most part, any big-time athlete with some decent skill and not a dickface, then I'm all over that. Like Tyrus Thomas I didn't like at all because of his 'tude, but Gay seemed like a good guy and had some intriguing perimeter potential so I can't help but be intrigued by a guy like that. For some reason I had no interest in Thad Young though normally I'm really into a guy like that, just didn't know anything about him I guess

2005 - don't remember
2006 - Mostly liked Gay and, like Devilz, talked myself into Foye
2007 - I wanted Julian Wright, didn't really care for anyone else
2008 - Of course I wanted Rose but that wasn't gonna happen. I got on the Mayo bus, thinking Foye-Mayo could be a dynamic backcourt. Didn't think Love fit here despite Devilz's sales pitch. I'm still not sure about the fit but I do love his game.
2009 - Rubio. If he declares I want the Wolves to do whatever it takes to get him.

yea, I tend to like guys from winning programs. Guys with good coaching and attitudes. I focus on defense rather than scoring. I think of how I would want to coach them.

2005: McCants. I thought it was the right pick at the time. The guy had great college stats and was (still is) blessed with the physical tools to succeed at the position.
2006: Roy, Roy, and more Roy. The guy had amazing, stop-the-presses college stats.
2007: Joakim Noah.
2008: Kevin Love.
2009: It will obviously depend on where they draft but I'm guessing they end up somewhere around 5-7 and that Cole Aldrich or Steph Curry will be the best pick by then.

Re: Recent Drafts---for the record
SnP, do you think Curry is quick enough to defend the NBA pg? I love his passing, BBIQ, Shooting and leadership. I think he could make a good offensive pg, but I have concerns about his defense. Not his stealing (one of the top in nCAA) but just man-man.

Re: Recent Drafts---for the record
2005 - I wavered back and forth between McCants and the wings (Granger/Wright/Graham). I remember so badly wanting McCants to prove everyone wrong.
2006 - I'm pretty sure I was one of the most vocal people on this board about Brandon Roy. I absolutely loved Roy. I pretty much screamed when we drafted him. I just loved the fact he had a complete all around game. When we traded him I was crushed. I tried to convince myself that Bobby Jones was going to be an ok substitute because he was a fantastic defensive player. I also tried to convince myself that Foye had enough of a scorer's mentality to take on the Marbury role, and that's what KG needed. I'm still angry to this day about the trade, and almost talked myself into becoming a Blazers fan, but I didn't want to be like casey, that's just dirty.
2007 - I loved Al Horford, Jeff Green and Brandan Wright. Wright especially because I figured he could learn from KG. I didn't mind the Brewer pick after the draft went down because I figured him and KG would turn us into a great defensive team.
2008 - I didn't like Mayo at first, but as the draft got closer I loved him. I figured he'd be perfect to pair with Foye. I remember hating Bayless, Gallinari, Alexander, and Gordon. I know actually like Gordon, but I think he's too close to McCants, and he just would have been a poor fit.
2009 - This year I'm HUGE on Thabeet and Evans. I hate Curry, Teague, and Jennings for this team. Holiday seems to be more likely to stay in school for 2010, but I'd like him as well. I see some Russell Westbrook in him. I love Summers and Jordan with our later picks.

How would everyone feel about a Curry-Evans backcourt. We could potentially draft both with our and the MIA pick. Im sure this is better suited for the college players thread but figured this is slightly on topic anyway.

Re: Recent Drafts---for the record
Evan Turner, or Ty Evans?
I worry that Ty Evans is only special if he can play the PG at the nba level. Or at least be a SG that is ball dominate (johnson/Roy) which concerns me with Al on the team. I also see more Crawford then special.
Curry is tough for me. I would love him with the Miami pick, but he wont last that long.
Right now my perfect draft is Rubio
If Rubio is not there then we debate between Holiday and Thebeast. If we go with Thebeast hope one of the PG's drop to Miami.
I am convinced we need to make a 2/1 or 3/1 trade to move some pieces for something.

I'd prefer Evans over Curry, and would be pissed if we drafted Curry and didn't get Evans. Evans would need a little bit more of a distributor mindset to set up Curry on Rip Hamilton type movement, where as Evans is more of a ball dominant, get to the basket type. Curry would pair well with Chauncey, obviously as Rip paired well with him. Curry and Holiday would probably be a better rookie pair.

Re: Recent Drafts---for the record
I meant Ty Evans. Im not saying its the best case scenario. And i am not trying to get my hopes up for Rubio, if he comes out the gods will grant us the 6th pick or some crap. I think Holiday is the next PG but i dont see him coming out.
If when we pick Curry is the BPA and Evans is on the board with the Miami pick i think it would be something we should consider. They could play off of each other well. But i agree that if we get Curry and dont get Evans it will be a pretty shi++y scenario.
