If the Timberwolves would prefer to swing a deal for a veteran player this summer, rather than try to lure a free agent to Minnesota, they could try to get Kirk Hinrich.

Hinrich, who has three years and $26 million left on his current contract, was the centerpiece of trade rumors involving the Bulls and Timberwolves prior to February's trade deadline.

Well the word was they really like Bosh and he likes Chicago so I'm sure expirings would be the key. Especially with Rose being the starter that's too much money for a backup. That said they probably just can't unload him without getting some kind of picks back to sell it to the fans

I truly think with the economy being what it is Cardinal (expiring), Smith (useful and young player who's expiring), My Perogative(cheap backup PG), and either Utah or Boston pick is probably the best they'll probably get. Especially if Andre Miller and other veterans are available for around the MLE.

If we could get Hinrich for the above (Cardinal+smith+Brown+late 1st) I would do it in a second. It would leave us with the Miami and our own pick. It would be pretty incredible.

I just can't see it. MIN refused to give expirings for Hinrich last month at the trade deadline. If anything, they are less likely now to add longterm salary to build around Foye.

Hinrich's contract is suspect as it is, but if he was a free agent, he'd probably get the MLE, and a two year deal. We got Gomes + Craig Smith + Telfair for the price of Hinrich last year! 2009 will see even cheaper deals, and make Hinrich 's contract look even worse.

And let's not forget that there are several PG's in the draft, as well as free agency for the MLE.

Finally, whatever we spend on Hinrich eats into our 2010 cap money (and 2011 too!). That will be a far more valuable commodity, either in free agency or in trade, than Kurt Hinrich.

Hinrich fits no team better than he fits us, but he certainly does not deserve expirings, and we don't have even a slightly bad two-year deal to include. CHI will never incentivize Hinrich from their side, so I don't think there is a deal we'll ever agree upon.

why are the wolves-related news so negative.....and makes me feel so sad

correction... this draft is full of tweeners (Teague, Warren, Evans, Curry) and question marks (rubio coming out?, Jennings and Maynor). Evans is interesting but Lawson is the only true PG that I would feel comfortable with, but he projects to go right smack in between our picks.

If rubio doesn't come out and we are not able to secure a Lawson or Evans and we could get Hinrich for Brown, Cardinal, Smith and Madsen or maybe Bassy, Cardinal, Madsen I think we should take it. He is solid perimeter defender, all around good PG and a known commodity.

I suppose if they get rid of Deng (to another team), we could do Gomes + Filler for Hinrich...but that probably defeats the purpose for Chicago.

Hinrich and Sefolosha have both looked awesome since the trading deadline.

I knew Sefolosha would be great for OKC. I always liked that guy.

If we want Hinrich, lets draft Nick Calathes.

Cardinal, Smith, Brown and Boston pick seems like good value for me. Expirings and some offensive scoring from Smith would be good for Chicago. Wolves don't give up anything useful. They keep the Utah pick for next year.

Assuming Wolves stick at #6 and Griffin, Rubio, and Thabeet aren't available, we take Ty Evans and DeJuan Blair/BJ Mullens with the Miami pick.

Three man big rotation of Love, Jefferson, and either Mullens or Blair.
SF - Miller/Gomes
SG - Foye/Brewer
PG - Evans/Hinrich

I'd be happy with that. We still have Madsen and Miller's expirings, plus a little cap space and Utah's 1st to swing a deal around the deadline for a Richard Jefferson or Luol Deng type.

The questions comes down to when you are expecting the Wolves to compete. If you think they are a legit playoff team next year with hinrich, then you might be more willing to take on his large contract.

I am more in the camp that says I think the wolves are still a year away from being playoff contenders. And when I talk about playoff contenders I dont necessarily mean scratching for a the 8th spot in the playoffs. But I consider it more when we might actually consider ourselves a threat to win a playoff series.

I would not advocate trading or signing any big name players this year. Obviously deals can come around that would make too much sense but in general, I take our draft picks, try and move up if possible, but otherwise stay young, and maybe sign a "mentor" or two to fill out the roster.

And I also would not give up that much for Hinrich, I understand its good value, but really I dont think Chicago holds any bargaining power if in fact they want cap space for 2010. To me the pick has more value than a throw in to even up the value in a trade for Hinrich. But I wouldnt trade for Hinrich anyways. With our expirings we will get far better offers next year at the trade deadline.

We're most likely not a play-off team next year due to Big Al's injury unless whoever we get in the draft blows-up LeBron style.

I think we really need to look at this again after the draft. If we take a guy like Jennings or Evans, maybe even Rubio with our first pick I don't really see the need for Hinrich. If we take Thabeet, Clark, Aminu, or another guy like that with our first pick then I am in favor of bringing Hinrich in. He's always been a smart player who's a capable PG and doesn't try to play outside himself. I just really like him on this team.

I hate the wording on this article. "IF they decide to make a deal, then they COULD try to get Hinrich.". Sounds like BS to me.

There's a big difference between trading Jason Collins expiring and taking Hinric in the middle of a lost season-- whcih would have only screwed up our lottery position-- and trading Cardinal after the season who would just be a waste on the cap for the year anyway. Word was we offered them Cardinal's contract and they turned it down. They wanted something more like Collins plus a pick. Reoffering Cardinal would not be a change in the least bit.

I disagree. If the deal was Cardinal for Hinrich at the trade deadline, we were trading our guy with $9.5 mil remaining on his contract for CHI's guy with $30 mil remaining (for two additional years). Now it would be trading our $6.75 mil for their $26.5 mil guy. As a player like Cardinal reaches his final year, his trade value as an expiring grows a great deal. Hinrich, who's on the books through 2011, does not see such an increase in value.

However, its simpler than that. Is Hinrich on a good deal? Is he worth an expiring, which will be added to our raw cap space the following summer?

I say no. Hinrich is a good player, but good players don't get three-year, $26.5 mil deals any more. He is not worth expirings.

I would not offer Cardinal and Madsen for Hinrich.

Let me put it a different way, since I have the minority opinion.

Let's say you think that Hinrich is a great value at $26.5 mil, better free agent PG's will make more, and we want to commit financial resources to build around Randy Foye, who we know will be the future.

EVEN THEN there's no reason to make this deal now. What is Hinrich going to do for us in 2009-10? We may be without Al for half the season, and we have a bunch of rookies getting their feet wet on a team that clearly needs one more year before it competes for the play-offs. If you wait a year, you can offer that same raw cap space for Hinrich now, and instead of MIN including picks, CHI would be sending picks our way.

Hinrich brings added value in that 1) he plays a position of need, 2) brings a veteran presence to serve as a mentor for younger guys and lead by example, especially on defense, 3) would not cost any assets except for cap dollars, 4) has a declining contract during the last three years of his prime, and 5) being from Iowa would probably actually like playing here (a rare breed for those that actually have a choice.)

You could play Hinrich next to Foye, Brewer, Miller or any SG in the draft. He's also the perfect point guard for a post oriented half court offense due to his defense and three point shooting ability.

Here's how I look at it-- after 2010-- when Cardinal's contract would be off the books, Hinrich is still owed 2 years for $17 million. During those two years, that is fair market value for his services IMO.

Hinrich plays defense and he's shooting 42% from 3 and he can run an offense, so I'm ready for some Hinrich action. Thats my about-face for the day.
