Lets say we combine our picks and our expirings. Who are the possible players we could target? (Remember that Elton Brand was moved for an early pick.) Some of these are for our picks, some are simply for the expirings.

I am not saying these players would be moved, but it would be worth asking. Feel free to comment or add players.

-Josh Smith
--They might need the money to focus on Marvin/Bibby/Johnson. Smith has also had more than a handful of run-in with the coach. I am utterly impressed with this kid's talent.

-Joe Johnson
--Similar to above. Logic being they do not have the money to resign all the parts. I would rather have Smith on this team than almost anyone.

-Caron Butler
---Just off trade Checker Miller/Madsen/Cardinal for Butler/Stevenson/Songaila works. This would bring Washington 3 expiring contracts that they could straight up buy out. My understanding is that Washington wants to clear money.

-Rudy Gay
--rumor are he does not work well with Mayo. They might move him with a bad contract (*ironic to get Mr.Lima back) and a mid-round pick. (*Cardinal/Mia for Gay/Jaric?)

-Chris Paul/Tyson Chandler
--No owner loves his money more. How about Tyson Chandler+Chris paul for Miller+Cardinal+our pick? We might get a bidding war with portland, but we need to be able to offer more. Seriously offer a ton. it sounds like a pipedream but might not be.

-Deron Williams/AK47
--Some people on the utah board want to blow it up and start over. We take two big contracts, offer expirings and a high pick. Why not?

-Monte Ellis/Biedrins
--Take on a ton of cash, and I guess it depends on if we see Ellis as a star. This is the more likely version of Williams/Paul

Just some options. Lets hope the wolves are making calls.

I like some of your ideas Rev. I guess players like Paul and Williams are pretty much untouchable but if we somehow win the lottery (HA!) I'd offer our pick and expirings to match contracts.

I think the Wolves would need the number one pick to get the Hornets or Jazz attention.

Wow, some of them are pretty out there. However, I agree that we should even think about trading our pick to get something.

I like the Smith option the best. While not a Center or even a traditional PF, hes a guy that I think could man up on the other team's best post.

I think the most likely is Butler. They are in rebuilding mode.

Utah likely wouldn't trade with a division rival, I'm not a fan of either Warrior. Gay would be dece. I would love the Hornets one, but it ain't happening. Maybe Chandler, but not Paul.

yeah it would at least take our pick assuming we'll win the lottery plus Love which would be kind of contradictory considering Griffin and Love are both PFs and New Orleans already having an "all star" at the PF spot.

dreaming is nice but it would take a major brain fart by the Hornets GM or some other genius 3rd party GM to make that happen

Looking forward, the Wolves have put themselves in a position where they can be very active during this off-season as well as at next year's trade deadline. They have enough expiring 09/10 deals to bring back in $27 mil of contracts without sailing way above the luxury mark. This means the team should be looking at financially troubled teams with solid young talent and contracts extending beyond 10/11. I suppose it could mean taking a flier on a sign-and-trade with a big name 2010 free agent, but that's not something I'd bank on. Here are a few teams the Wolves should keep an eye on: New Orleans: $77.8 mil with 11 contracts. Main assets are Chris Paul, Tyson Chandler, and Peja Stojakovic. You may think I'm crazy, but with Chandler's toe being banged up, NOLA's only way forward might be to unload Mr. Paul. I honestly think he is the prize to be had during this off-season and up until the next trade deadline. If a team can take Paul and Peja while giving back expiring contracts, picks, and a decent young player or two, I think that deal gets done. My guess is that this is the road Portland travels down.

as I said earlier I guess it only happens with a 3rd team involved IMO. what can we offer what NO doesn't have save for the expirings? sure we could trade Big Al but as long as he's injured I doubt anyone will want to trade for him. we could offer Love to a 3rd team (I'd hate it though) hoping to get a player like Rudy Gay or Jeff Green traded to New Orleans along with our pick (assuming at least top2) and expirings.

then again, it's almost impossible. but Frim Hoiback can prove me wrong!

Rev, all of these trades should be complete pipe dreams. The crazy thing is that they aren't that out of reach. If we can get only one of these guys to pair with our pick this year we could be testing the playoff waters soon. All of these players are available because of wanting to rebuild...or more importantly to save money. I hope these teams don't realize that players like these are who sell tickets. We are in a really good cap (not financial) situation here in Minny. Hopefully, being in this situation, we can benefit off of the teams who are not. It'll be interesting to see the kinds of trades that go down along with the amounts free agents will get this offseason.

Any real trade that happens is concerned unrealistic and unfair for any fan before the trade happens.

Hmm...Some solid ideas if teams want to get out from under contracts.

I would love Josh Smith(or AK47) & Hinrich. If the cost was low.

The Wolves may make a play for Lebron James in 2010, that doesn't mean that we have any real chance to get him.

Edit: If we don't end up drafting a starting PG this off-season, I'd rather try to trade for Mike Conley (Maybe a Foye for Conley deal), than going after Hinrich.

I'm really falling in love with the Miller, Cardinal, and Madsen for McGrady+1st idea I threw out there earlier. Especially if we're able to pick up a center and a big point guard in the draft.

Are you looking at re-signing McGrady?

It all depends on how he performs. We most likely aren't looking to re-sign any of the three we give up, slim chance at Miller, but I doubt it. So really it wouldn't matter. We basically get a chance to buy a future 1st round pick. If McGrady shows he's healthy and lights it up, I'd be up for signing him to a friendly deal with our cap space in 2010. If he shows he's broken down when he comes back, we let him go and like I said, we still have that 1st round pick.

If McGrady can get healthy, he may have a lot more trade value at the 2010 trade deadline than the three headed Cardinal/Miller/Madsen.

Depending on who we draft, I would probably support your trade.
