OK, you all know that while I like Hinrich as a player, I feel his contract is too expensive in today's nba economy for a comparable PG, and I think we could definitely get a better PG if we waited and traded our raw cap space money in 2010. However, I also know I'm in the minority, and Hinrich remains a top trade target. For you guys, here's how I'd do it.

CHI GIVES: Kirk Hinrich (3 yr) + Tim Thomas + Jerome James + #16
CHI GETS: Stackhouse + Shawne Williams + Cardinal + Craig Smith + $3.85 mil TPE

MIN GIVES: Mike Miller + Cardinal + Craig Smith ($18,930,937)
MIN GETS: Kirk Hinrich + Tim Thomas + Jerome James + #16 ($22,566,600)

DAL GIVES: Stackhouse (ung) + Shawne Williams
DAL GETS: Mike Miller

WHY FOR CHI: Save the 2009 money for Ben Gordon. They save $5.25 for Stackhouse's unguaranteed deal, $3.85 for the TPE, and and $1.34 for removing the cap hold on the pick for a total savings around $10.44 mil. This also makes them more comfortable with a longer contract for Ben, exchanging Hinrich's long deal for expirings, so money is freed up even when they start paying their youth (Tyrus Thomas first). Buy out Cardinal, take a look at the younger Shawne and Craig Smith. They basically use the pick to exchange putting the Hinrich money into the better-fitting Ben Gordon, and simultaneously erase the future salary implications of both long contracts to afford their youth.

WHY FOR MIN: Let's compromise and say Hinrich is worth an expiring, so Miller/Smith's production = #16. I like Miller, but (like Hinrich) he won't help us enough next season to deny a rental to a team that could use him. The rest is $9 mil expiring for $13 mil in expiring. However, Jerome James contract is covered by 80% insurance, so the actual cash is $7.8 mil. Glen Taylor uses his financial position to turn CHI's insurance savings into cap savings, so they can use it on Gordon.

WHY FOR DAL: Ubiquitous DAL offer, adding talent for play-offs, but expiring contract lets them change directions in 2010.

Love it. My favorite trade all year.

Sign me up. The Jerome James add on makes this easier to do, I'm sure.

Is there a way we can a starting caliber center out of all this. I like Hinrich. He is coming into his prime, he is a good defender, and I think he will play very well if he is back to being a starter. This also allows us to put Foye in as a 6th man which I believe is his ideal spot.

I would like to add Madsen, Telfair and #18 + Bos Pick to get a legit starting C.

I examined including Noah in the trade instead of the #16, but the TPE was smaller, and I think it would cause CHI to say no.

I'm not particularly interested in the #16, but hope to use it to trade up.

I think the answer there is just to hope Mullens falls to 16.

LOL. I dont think i would be against the trade. Though i take pretty much the same position as Shrink when it comes to Cap'n Kirk, Jerome James' insurance and the pick is kind of enticing.

oh man, I would LOVE some cheese and wine right now, I'm kinda hungry and wanting to be drunk. In fact I'd settle for mouth wash and moldy cottage cheese, that's how desperate I am.

Wow great trade. I'd actually prefer sending Bassy over Smith. I think Smith could be a small moveable piece midseason for a late pick + expiring to a playoff team that needs post scoring. Bassy is a suitable backup and paid like it, but he has no chance of returning anything. Smith will also provide some value for the wolves while mullens adjusts and al is out.

I'd be fine with switching Smith to Telfair, because we'll probably walk away with a back-up to hinrich from the draft, and because it saves us more 2010 cap money.

For me the only real icing for this deal is the #16 pick. And that is only if we can package it to move up. Are there any teams in the top 10 that would actually want 2 mid-first round picks? You would need a team that wanted to spend 2 roster spots plus give 2 guaranteed contracts?

I wouldnt do this deal without having a deal in place to move up in the draft because we dont need 4 draft picks in the first round otherwise. Unless a lot of those underclassmen declare by sunday.

Now I would consider it if we could turn that 16th pick into a unprotected 1st or a couple of unprotected 1st for over the next couple of years.
