Mchale turns down 3 year coaching deal

Post#1 » by Mayoistooslow » Mon May 4, 2009 12:13 am

We offered Mchale a 3-year coaching contract and he turned it down. Crazy. I kinda liked him as a coach, but we can do better.

Boston Globe wrote: An NBA source said former Celtics star Kevin McHale turned down a three-year offer to coach the Timberwolves after he was moved from his general manager position to coach Dec. 8. While McHale has been noncommittal about whether he'd like to return next season, the three-year offer is off the table now, since owner Glen Taylor is expected to hire a new GM, likely from outside, who will make the coaching hire. By removing himself from the coaching decision, Taylor would make it easier to deal with the situation if the new GM doesn't bring his friend McHale back

I don't think he wants to commit himself to three years. I don't think this means he is absolutely not returning. He may consider a one year deal.

I mean maybe McHale could be that guy but the fact that we did want to lock him up long term is an example of why I want new blood in the front office. Here we go again trying to keep the same people around and settling for mediocrity. We need to start making bold moves, give a three year deal to a proven coach, blow crap up and put it back together in a different way.

Important to note that this was back when he first took over, not now.

and NBA coaching contract lengths do not really matter because they are often canned before they are finished. Ala NFL player contracts.

I like KM as our coach probably more than most, but I don't see the point in signing anyone to anything less than a three year deal. Why would we want to make out players make another adjustment one or two years down the road when they finally start to get used to things?

I think it was a token 3 yr offer. Do not look into it. A coaches job has no promises. month to month, week to week, etc.

Mchale did good with this group, but he was lucky to be compared to Wittman.

I'm pretty sure Talkbasket is a science teacher named Walter Wagner

http://ccinsider.comedycentral.com/2009 ... -collider/

Wagner: if you have something that can happen and something that won't necessarily happen, then it's either going to happen or it's going to not happen, so the best guess is a 50/50 chance.

EDIT: Damned tabbed browing! I put this in the wrong thread. My bad.

There is also the possibility that we're hearing about this now that this is a sham, and is only mentioned as a way for the organization to get rid of McHale, but allow him to save face.

I guess I don't know what to think about McHale coaching. He was certainly better than Wittman, but is that a ringing endorsement? January was great, and I like the way he turned the attitudes of the players around. Is that the real coach McHale? I don't penalize him for the record after Al's injury -- John Wooden couldn't have ridden that team much better. I would have liked to see more of Coach McHale to form an assessment. The players seem to unanimously like and respect him.

We have no organization right now that could determine the future of Mchale.

The man owns a wedding invitation empire. He could have leaked it on engraved stationary, with just a hint of lavender scent, to 100 of your closest friends with a wave of his finger.
