SIMMONS AS GM???

Post#1 » by FairDinkum » Wed May 6, 2009 6:00 pm

He is "tweeting" about is now on his "twitter" (ESPN's "Sports guy" that is) He did a similar campaign with the Bucks last year, of course with zero success...

http://twitter.com/sportsguy33

Hey T-Wolves fans: I am ready to launch the "Simmons for GM" campaign if you are. Already on record as loving 'Sota. http://tiny.cc/UXz2n

PS: Here's my offer to the T-Wolves. 3-year deal, first year for free as long as I can write a book about Season 1. I am dead-serious.

Minny's attendance in 2008-09: 27th overall. http://sports.espn.go.com/n... ... even with tons of family packs & discount deals

Minny's record from 2006-2009: 111-217, no playoff appearances. PS: I am inviting Britt Robson to be my assistant GM. Simmons-Robson 2009!

Guys I would build around: Jefferson, Love, Brewer, Foye, 2009 No. 1 pick. My game plan: Emulating how Presti rebuilt the Zombie Sonics.

T-Wolves prez Chris Wright: wright@timberwolves.com. Lobby him on my behalf. My question to Minny: Why not? You are irrelevant right now.

First big Minny idea: If we get eliminated from playoffs, tix rest of the way are half-price and season ticketholders get half-price refunds

2nd big Minny idea: Anyone who bought season tix in 1987 and kept them since, I am taking you to dinner. Groups of eight per dinner.

3rd big Minny idea: I promise to trade with Chris Wallace and Mike Dunleavy as much as I possibly can. Will e-mail 'em every day with offers

haha, I am all for it, its been dead around here far too long

I'm for it just because of the book.
"A while back,'' Cardinal said, "I took a picture of the standings and texted it to Love, just to bust his chops,'' Cardinal said. "He sent me a picture back of a snowdrift.''

I would be for it except that the guy knows zilch about college basketball and nothing about NBA prospects.

here's what he'd write:

"Yeah, before all 5 Timberwolves fans send mail bombs to Boston hear me out. Kevin Love is a great rebounding prospect, but he's growing into losing. Look at all the great champions in NBA history, they were surrounded by winners. With Allen and Pruitt teams just will not know how to match their intensity, especially opposing starters. I think this trade could work out for all the players involved: Love becomes one with team that wrote the history books that he loves to study. Pruitt and Allen start to become the leaders that history says they would be. The Timberwolves need champions, and they can get moxie and hustle in return for just a couple offensive boards a night."

I'm sold. How many future 1sts do we have to add to get that deal done?

It just goes to show....Timberwolves are in a very good position for the new GM, McHale did do a nice clean-up job. I sure hope Timberwolves can hold cap for a couple more years to really see what they have specialy with this years picks. Hinrich makes sense his contract ends in two years and that is when the Timberwolves, if all goes well will have a very good shot. Might be alil painfull for fans till then. And ultimatly one of Jefferson or Love will, have to be traded.

Explain to me how exactly did you reach that conclusion?
If it goes to show anything it's only just how miserable the state of this franchise is.

Anyway, my dream offseason:

1) Hire Simmons as GM and Robson as his assistant;
2) Draft Rubio;
3) Sign Ariza or Varejao;
4) Trade Miller.

The only downside I could really see to this would be that some GMs (Dunleavy) obviously hate Simmons and would never deal with him. On the other hand, some GMs obviously love him (Morey).

I read all Simmons' stuff and listen to all his podcasts, but it's been hard enough trying to convince people McHale wasn't submarining the team for the Celtics and he grew up in the state and went to college here, how the hell are we going to explain the Boston Sports Guy as the GM of the Wolves

I don't think you can talk seriously about hiring someone who is no more knowledgeable about basketball than the average fan and has no experience about the business side of basketball as a GM. It might have been a funny joke the first time he brought it up, but it's boring now.

Probably not, but at the same time it make me think it's just basketball. It doesn't take a rocket scientist, just a smart person with a passion for the game.

and not only does it not take a rocket scientist, but I kinda feel it's better not to have somebody who has too many variables involved in their decision-making and won't get too cute with things. How hard does the draft have to be, we don't even have HS players any more, just make it a 3 step process:

1. Is this person crazy? If yes, strike them from the list, if no, go to step #2

2. Was this person a productive player? If no, strike them, if yes, go to step #3

3. Does this person have the physical gifts to beat his defender with either strength, speed/agility, or length/jumping ability? If no, strike em, if yes, add to potential draft candidates. Now take your group and see who's the youngest, most productive, most physically gifted of the group, call them up to the podium and stick your team cap on their head.

boom, no more Tyrus Thomas top 5 because he's too crazy, no more Marvin Williams at 2 because there's more productive players on the board and he's not uniquely physically gifted, no more Sene at 10 because he's proven nothing.

Maybe you don't take Roy #3 in '06 for example, but you at least take Gay; you wouldn't even consider Morrison or Tyrus. It's fool-proof!

There are lots of ex players who are GMs. These are people who haven't been educated to a very high standard and seemingly have very poor analytical and financial skills. Are you telling me that someone like Isaiah Thomas is more qualified to be a GM than Bill Simmons simply because he used to play pro basketball?
