What? Are you freaking kidding me? We lost Tom Penn?

Post#1 » by Calinks » Wed May 20, 2009 6:15 pm

I just read this in todays paper. What the heck!?! Penn, Pfund, Lindsay, all dropping out! Why!?! This would seem like a great GM job. You got some talented young players, cap flexibility, a handful of draft picks, this is like a huge sandbox.

A lot of this must have to do with Glen Taylor and how he wants things run. What the hell is this man doing? Why is he trying to cage in these creative minds? Turn the freaking team over and let somebody come in here and run it! We are at a pivotal time when we can start making major changes to establish our future.

Don't screw this up, I hate it when people "settle" for things as big as this. If there are 3 great candidates you have to get one of those guys. Don't be satisfied with the 5th guy who you didn't really like to begin with. I can't believe we are pulling this crap after everything this franchise has been through.

We know cutting corners doesn't work, we know, that Glen needs to stay out of the FO as much as possible. The crap we have been doing has yielded very little positive. It's time to get this franchise rolling, why the hell are we still trying to dictate to these guys what to do? This is infuriating!

Were you in a coma the last couple days? :-) I know you were on vacation, but did they not have electricity or the written word there?

The worst part is we can't even go back to McHale, it looks like he's found a new job playing the wheelchair kid on glee.

Pretty much. I got to watch a little ESPN, no Internet was available to me or local paper.

That explains it, ESPN hasnt even heard of the timberwolves. During the lottery they just had a question mark nest to the team with the 5th best odds.

First (and most importantly) he emphasized that Taylor has offered GM candidates full control for personnel and coaching staff decisions. He wanted fans (and specifically, the blogosphere) to know that Taylor isn’t insisting anything related to he or McHale. How much truth there is to that, I haven’t any idea.

if this is true then we do not know the reason why we are being rejected.

Im not buying it. Glen is just using Fred to run interference. I think it has everything to do with the lack of freedom he is giving these candidates.

If Glen wants Fred to be the player personal leader and wants to hire just a CBA guy then let us know. I would support that. it is the uncertainty that appears like lack of direction that kills me.

I have no reason to believe any of that. It seems pretty obvious at this point that Taylor wants a guy who will just do what he tells him to do.

I'm skeptical of that explanation as well. Other than the issue of how much control, it seems like the job is pretty attractive IMO. I mean, maybe I'm overvaluing the position, but with multiple picks, some decent young talent, a place where just getting to the playoffs will be considered quite the success, some cap room in a year, it just seems like a spot someone would want. UNLESS there are other factors....

I thought we lost Tom Penn because Portland gave him a huge raise and a promotion or new title or whatever.

It would be interesting to see just exactly how the Wolves (and Taylor) are thought of around the league.

This much is true. I can't comment on the others but Portland really wanted to keep Penn and his knowledge of the salcap so he received a huge raise and promotion. It was not so much a rejection of the Timberwolves but being happy(and well compensated)where he is

Well I dont really know everything about the situation, but they way i saw it was that Penn was offered a last second promotion and raise, then looked back to the Wolves who was not willing to up their offer of full control or contract or whatever, so he stayed home, took the promotion and waits for a better job to present itself.

Kudos to him, Penn is a good guy.

That's what I am saying though. We can't let these guys get away. Maybe we have somebody else we are really interested in but when you are trying to get a key component you shouldn't be settling unless you absolutely have to. You think Zygi Wilf would let three top candidates walk away like that? We are too damn passive, we need to get after these people. It does us no good to save some cash and effort just to get a mediocre GM and remain stagnant for the next 5 years. I'd rather pay now and reap the benefits.

I dont think Taylor feels the same way. And im on your team, we have let two (im not really educated on Pfund) really good potential candidates go over what appears to be petty differences. We need to cut the crap and Taylor has to cut the umbilical cord

Its probably just because they wanted to have control over everything and Taylor said that Mchale is the coach if he wants it. Then of course Mchale is going to have his say on the players when he has a horrible eye for talent, so might as well put him back at his old **** job...Glen Taylor, I have about 6 grand let me buy the Wolves?
