Kahn: 17 months needed to fix Wolves

via Star Tribune:New general manager David Kahn says he needs 17 months to fix the Timberwolves.
"I don't think we'll have everything put together the way I see fit for another 17 months," he told the Star Tribune. "What I mean by that is, I'm talking about the team and everything. We have a lot of opportunities, starting with this draft, through this summer with free agency, trade deadline, next summer's draft, next summer's free agency. We have several windows of opportunity to really transform the team and add some significant pieces."
I like this guy. He know what he's talking about and seems to know what it will take to "fix" this team.
I agree with him - this team is going to need this year's draft, next year's draft, this summer's free agency, next summer's free agency, help from god to put together a quality team.
2010...

I'd need 14.5 months tops, Wolves hired the wrong guy

I think that is a reasonable time frame to make this franchise matter again in a meaningful way.

I can't wait to see Kahn having a major knee injury in his 2nd year here

Kahn's knee is going down.
At first I was thinking "WTF!?!?!?!? 17 months?" Then I realized that puts us to opening day of 2010. Which makes sense. My hope is that this means he's not blowing his load this summer on Hinrich or any other over-paid players.

All of a sudden, I can't read any messages without reading between the lines.

takes a twisted mind to read that into a message.

Very creative Devilz.
I think a lot of casual fans are going to get upset by Kahn's comments, but I think he's being realistic. More importantly, it actually sounds like he has a long term plan in place.
I do think this is going to be the most critical offseason though as it can either get us in the right direction or send us even further back.

This encourages me.
I've long been an advocate of choosing development over competitiveness in 2009, and going all out in 2010. I think the season should start in 17 months, and it sounds like Kahn is there as well. To me, this makes a Hinrich trade less likely as well.
I like what I'm hearing. I'm sending this guy a resume' on Wednesday.

It would be nice if Kahn & Company can reach his goal but just because a team has money to try and entice free agents it doesn't mean free agents will sign here...See Bulls in their first 10 years of rebuilding. Good free agents just use teams to try and raise their stock with other teams then sign elsewhere.
I don't understand all the fascination with Kirk Hinrich. He held the Bulls development back for years until they got a better point guard and a younger one at that.

I wasn't on the Kahn bandwagon at first, but I'm beginning to change my tune abit (albeit there is really nothing to go off of yet). The thing I've noticed after him being around for a while is that he is a very eloquent speaker, he gets what he wants to say out clearly and he is able to easily plan his words so things are interpreted how he intends them to be, unlike McHale. Obviously that's not the top priority for a GM, but it does bring a little bit of respectibility towards us. He wasn't brought in here for his talent evaluating prowess, as that is not his MO, he's here because he's a wheeler and dealer, and hopefully he lets the scouts, etc. do their jobs. What he can do for us is help us deal with other teams/free agents, etc. He brings some professionalism to the table, he can stand in there with the top execs of other teams and be on the same level, unlike McHale who obviously doesn't have the business background Kahn does. I don't know if this really makes any sense to anybody but me, but I think it's worth something at least.
