What choices did Kahn have at 6th?

Post#1 » by klemen4 » Fri Jun 26, 2009 5:39 pm

First I must say followed I MIN a lot in last 14 days, also all the articles about Kahn made me think you got a great GM. I still think so, but... Kahn took a big gamble at 6th and (for now) got burned.

MIN was prepared of any combination of Harden/Evans AND Flynn...but when OKC surprised and picked Harden and when Sacramento pick Evans trading for 5th picked payed of...Ricky Rubio.

Than the decision:

1) Kahn here in my opinion could go safe picking Curry and Rubio/Curry would be great duo. Also with picking Curry GSW would pick Hill and he could make a trade of Flynn(NY)+player/pick for Curry if he wanted Flynn so much.

2) Second option I think could be picking Derozan, very raw but could be a star.

3) So I think Kahn decided that with picking Flynn with a trade he could get him dream duo of Rubio/Evans.

Im sure he tried hard to trade Flynn to SAC for Evans but they said NO. I think with 18 and 28 he thought he has enough to make a trade, sadly that didnt happen. I think he gambled to much, to pick Flynn to trade him he should have a YES from SAC before the pick was made.
I know, I know...maybe the story is totally different, but anything else doesnt make sense.

-------------------------------------------

About the draft in general.

- Trading 18th pick for Charlotte 2010-13 protected (12,10,8,3) was a great trade.

- 28 pick Ellington was a steal. After Harden and Henderson he is the best prototypical sg. I think a better shooting version of Courtney Lee is the best comparison.

- 45/47 pick...well, I dont know why you traded the right to Calathes to Dallas, he could be nice backup pg/sg in a few years. Norel, I dont expect to make it to NBA.

------------------------------------------

Good luck guys with the Rubio situation.

I will follow your team closely in next year.

I think you have to be pretty close with your thinking...I expect we tried to get Evans as well. I was like 100% sure that one of Harden/Evans was going to be on this team and likely Flynn as Rubio would've gone higher for one of those 2 to drop. We got thrown a curveball and ended up taking BPA. I still think we should've drafted for NY and probably have taken Curry, then trade down and take DeRozan but it didn't happen. I'd even be happy if we would've traded down to get Henderson but that didn't happen either. I still think a trade will happen. We simply have ZERO three point threat...teams will crowd the paint and we will get ownd. Gotta' make a trade. Make sure Rubio is coming over first then trade Flynn.

I would have thought drafting Flynn signified a trade back to #8 with NY and selecting Derozan while picking up another asset of some sort, possibly trading Songaila for an expiring (if they had one to match up), a future second rounder, swapping Gallinari with Smith, or something else along any of those lines.

If we drafted Flynn with the intent of making a deal for Evans but came up short I can handle that.
Of course no one would ever admit such a flub and rather tell us about their cousin Vinny in Detroit. lol

He had these choices imo:
curry to nyk, for 8(derozan) + x
curry to nj, for 11 + x
curry to cha, for 12 + x

Curry..
And Kahn saying Flynn-Rubio is better blend than Rubio-Curry is no sense..

it makes sense if you think Flynn is considerably better than Curry. We'll just have to wait and see.

I think you hit the nail on the head... Flynn over Curry. Also, he maybe didn't want another player wanting NY

After watching the presser, I'm drinking the Kool-Aid. Take the best players available to you and don't hesitate. Will Rubio and Flynn work together? Who knows... but Minnesota just got 2 great players and I'm psyched about it.

Besides Rubio is only 18 and is only going to get bigger and stronger.

Maybe Rubio was the right pick but Gerald Henderson would have been the next best pick. Dantoni said henderson wowed in workouts and he would have been the pick if the Knicks didn't choose Jordan Hill. Larry Brown didn't think gerald would fall so I'm inclined to believe he was worthy of a top 10 selection because of his ability on both ends of the floor.

I would be surprised if Rubio stayed longer than 4 years. Flynn might be my favorite player on the wolves now that Foye is gone.

Flynn is my favorite player now that KG is gone. He is their only player with any charisma!

If I were Kahn I would have been picking between DeRozan and Jordan Hill with the #6 pick. Rubio and DeRozan would be a great fit. They would be a very good defensive backcourt with great size. DeRozan would be a sick finisher playing next to Rubio. Hill would give Miny another good big, of which you can never have too many.

If you think there's a lot of hoopla over drafting two PG's (we have none), I can't even imagine the hoopla there would be if we drafted a fourth PF (we have three good ones -- 7 on our roster)

You are wrong. Your whole assumption is based on the fact that Rubio will surely play for MN. Now, what if you can't make Rubio play for MN like we are hearing now. Lets even you know that there is a chance Rubio will play this game of not trying to play for MN before the draft, you would still pick the guy thinking what if he does, next you will pick curry thinking what if he doesn't. Make sense?

took the bpa. we are a building team and had flynn rated higher than anyone else. deal with it. flynn can defend the pg and when rubio grows into his body he will defend sg more than pg. i think if we keep both guys it will work well. i am drinking the kool aid.

I really like the combination of Rubio/Flynn. Here's how I think it could work out:
-On offense, Rubio would play the position of a true point guard. He would be the main facilitator of the offense. With Flynn, he can take advantage of slashing to the basket without the ball and have Rubio make some passes to Flynn in those situations. Flynn can really take advantage of his vertical for jumpshots and when going toward the rim. Also, Flynn could do some things on the perimeter. He could use his vertical ability (again) and make some perimeter jump-shots for us.

-Defense is really the easiest place to figure out how to play the Rubio/Flynn combo. Rubio guards the 2 guard. He was defensive player of the year in his league at the mere age of 18. 18!!!! people. Flynn would be able to play defense against the opponent's point guard. He would be able to match up better with his size and would use his physicality and relentlessness to play tough defense.

Take it for what it's worth, but I think this is a really solid possibility.
