Can someone explain to me how buyouts work? Why in soccer can the team buyout contracts or but the right to sign players? Yet is basketball the player himself must pay for his buyout?
I know a team can buyout players already under contract. Wouldn't this all be easier if TEAMS could buyout euro contracts? If all he wants is minutes he'll get them. I understand the feeling of either, I need all the control, or I don't want any of the control but he needs to loosen up. I understand he's 18, but maybe that's what he needs to understand. Personally I think if you're going to let him go over to Euro for 1 more year, he might as well spend that year in the D-league at least then we can call him up (not sure if he still makes his NBA salary there either).

Crazy maybe, but at least I didn't say anything about trading him ;)

OTOH- Flynn has that charisma baby, that Micheal Ivin style going on. He's going to be a fan fav for as long as he's here. As long as he's here.

It's an NBA rule. The NBA has a rule that teams can only spend $500K for buyouts. This is too prevent big market teams from having an unfair advantage in signing foreign players. This is the same policy rationale as the salary cap -- to have a level playing field across all markets.

Good luck keeping all the Rubio talk in this thread, haha. I commend the effort, but it's just not gonna happen. Things are gonna get a lot more lively around here for the foreseeable future. We are, of course, prepared for the onslaught.

Bring it on fools. :starwars

link to givony podcast where he says rubio buyout was reduced to 4 million,
http://www.draftexpress.com/podcast.php

it's #21. at about 2 minutes. he also mentioned rubio would likely be there at 5 24 hrs before the draft.
he has direct contact with fegan, this has to be legit.

even if rubio won't play here kahn would be stupid to trade him before next yr's lottery when we can get a top 5 pick for him.

can we get an asterisk * KNICK TRADE GARBAGE NOT ALLOWED please

Hello. I suppose I qualify as a "troll." Could somebody please inform me on what in the hell is going on?
Cuz I'm not getting it. Alright. You drafted him. Then Flynn. That's...weird. Then he doesn't show up to the draft meet and greet conference or whatever. Concretely, has he refused to play for Minnesota? Is he threatening to actually stay in Europe? How much of this is just freakin' propaganda, and how much has Rubio/his awful agent actually said?

Here's what we know:

-Rubio's dad said is was POSSIBLE that Rubio would stay in Spain one or two years..not will for sure...
-Rubio said it's cold in Minny and was concerned we took Flynn with the #6 pick(who wouldn't be)
-Rubio said if he could get minutes he would come.
-Kahn told Rubio we'd wait for him if necessary...Rubio told his mom and it made her smile.
-Rubio never has said that he won't play in minnesota and it was said before the draft that he was actually warming up to coming here.
-Rubio did NOT skip the press conference..he is heading back to Spain to figure out his buyout situation.
-A lot of people(myself included) want to keep both Flynn and Rubio to see how that could work. PS:Drafting a pg with both the 5 and 6 pick doesn't automatically mean one has to be traded.

In other words, no one has any right to say that Rubio won't play in Minnesota, he has to be traded, etc.

Did I miss anything?

Just forget for a bit New York... seriously, is Flynn-Rubio a nice couple? I just think this is the point. It is simply not the best thing to do drafting 2 young point guard that have to compete with each other, when the team has big needs in other areas.. Then, considering the trouble with Rubio it appears clear that some trade must be done.

kid honestly has to be confused about us selecting flynn behind him.
we also have no coach currently.
there are definite benefits to both parties to waiting a year.

he is probably getting alot of advice from alot of people.
if he wants to play in the NBA it will be with us.

kahn would not have written the "letter to the fans" (in zgoda's trib blog)
if he were preparing to trade him, because it would probably cost him his job.

Hye Brooklyn Bulls could you lock a couple of flame war threads for us?

Thanks, a lot, for that summary.

Here's my two cents. Get one of those two the hell off the team. Yesterday. There's this perception that drafting BPA gives you higher value in a trade. Sure, but only if you trade the BPA, right quick. Keeping both these dudes, and watching the experiment fail, and by god it will, that's an irodclad guarantee from me, will tank both players' value because it will be clear that you're desperate to get rid of one. AND it will cause both them, along with the team, to suck. And that's not helping return either.

I dont understand why you guys hate Rubio so badly? I rather have Ricky Rubio any day then Curry. Curry is a streaky player, some games are good the other games are bad.
Curry is gonna end up like a garbage Carmelo Anthony a guy who goes 5/30 in the first half.
Rubio is sick have you ever seen this guys passes?

I can if it's on the Bulls board. I am otherwise powerless. Like you, but a teeny bit better.

1. We draft Flynn cause he was the BPA and our team is a long way away. Curry is another PG. Hill plays PF, which is a position we ruled out. Derozan didn't work out for us, and is panned by many.

2. He didn't show up to the press conference on his agents advice b/c a) he was exhausted from the weekend, b) he wanted to be with his family, c) his agent didn't think it was right to do a press conference until the buy out was negotiated

3. He has not refused to play for MN. He has said nothing of the sort. This is not a Fran Vasquez situation, or even a Yi situation. He said he wants to play in the NBA. His only concerns are a) being able to afford to, 2) the weather b/c his mom doesn't like the cold (spoken like a true 18 year old), and 3) playing time (Kahn has said he would be the day one starter)

4. A lot of this is propaganda b/c controversy sells newspapers

flynn was BPA at 6, curry doesn't fit any better.

there is alot of speculation that we drafted him to trade up for evans and got burned when the guy sacto wanted at 18 (johnson) went to chicago.

flynn should be a pretty good player. as rubio grows and fills out flynn/rubio could be a devastating defensive pairing.

it is also possible we have a trade in place for flynn, but are waiting to see if rubio comes or not.

Nah, we love Rubio. The majority of Wolves fans have been pining after Rubio since day one. It's fans from other team's fanbases (namely the Wizards and Knicks) that feel entitled to troll out of frustration that he didn't land in their laps. The whole buyout situation seems to make Knicks fans feel that he should be handed over for garbage.

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-4 ... Poker.html

ESPN is reporting EXACTLY what I thought was going on (paraphrased):

Rubio's reluctance stems from the Flynn pick as well as the reduced pay that comes with being the 5th pick as compared to top 3, which is a concern with his looming buy-out and NOT from the city which selected him. He has no personal problems with the franchise and "cold" certainly is not a serious factor for him.

Market size doesn't matter due to his global appeal and being in the NBA helps him realize on and off the court star potential to market effectively.

NOBODY in any franchise believes Kahn intends on keeping both long term, he's just saying that to avoid losing leverage.

Kahn's leverage in trades is much better than most people would initially think because Rubio's value could increase when his buy out is finalized, his wrist is shown to be fully healed, or returns to Europe and shows improvement (especially w/ his shot) and Kahn doesn't need to trade Rubio as trading Flynn will also solve the problem, so it isn't a situation where he is forced to pull the trigger on a bad value deal. Also, list of suitors could change the longer Kahn waits.

Kahn is more than willing to wait as well, leaving Rubio overseas for a year or 2, so no hurry to make a bad trade.

A number of teams are hot for Rubio, obviously including the Knicks, but the Knicks also have little to offer that the Wolves would want.

The only thing that was forced on draft night was Kahn's selection of Rubio, once he fell to fifth, Kahn HAD to take him. There wasn't an option, he was just far too talented to pass on twice.
---------------------------------------------

So basically: I really doubt anything happens within the next few days and maybe not at all this off-season. Rubio has no problem at all with US, just that he slid a few picks more than he would have liked to because of financial reasons and with us immediately picking another player at his same position, and honestly who wouldn't be miffed by that? Kahn has great leverage in any trade discussions and will wait to make sure he does the right thing for the franchise, whether that's playing the two together in the short term, leaving Rubio overseas for a year or two, or trading one of the two point guards (but not rushing or forcing a trade).

That's not upsetting at all.
